Angela Rodriguez asks:
I am starting to see a lot of ads for a new minimally evasive form of liposuction being offered at medi spa's in place of liposuction procedures that take place in hospitals. How effect and SAFE are these new methods?

Dear Ms. Rodriguez,

Thank you for your question. There are several new minimally invasive liposuction procedures. Liposuction, however is still an aesthetic and surgical procedure and even the most non-invasive approaches should be performed by /or under the direction of a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. If not, a patient is at risk for body contour irregularities and even skin loss.

Some of the newer techniques for reducing very minuscule amounts of fat include the Zerona body slimming procedure which requires six to eight treatments and Cool Sculpting by Zeltig. Cool Sculpting utilizes the process of cryolipolysis or "fat freezing." Fat cells are more sensitive to the effects of cold, and CoolSculpting destroys fat cells through a controlled cooling process, leaving the surrounding tissue untouched. The number of treatments vary from one to two.

Small areas of fat may be treated by SmartLipo, a minimally invasive form of liposuction performed in the surgeon's office under local anesthesia. SmartLipo is excellent for the abdomen, thighs, neck and arms. A small laser (smaller than the tip of a pen) is inserted under the skin, the fat is melted, and skin tightening begins. The melted fat is then removed with a small suction device. Only one treatment is required.

The newest of the minimally invasive procedures is Cellulaze which treats cellulite on any part of the body. A laser is used to tighten the skin, break tissue bands, and melt irregular "fatty bumps," getting rid of that "orange peel look" once and for all. Only one treatment is required.
