16August   {Beauty} The 10 Best Hair Products For FOFs… Right This Minute
By Lois Joy Johnson

I don't do splurge / steal comparisons of products. In my opinion some pricey picks are stand-alone stars worth every dollar. On the other hand some low-cost items have remarkable quality and performance so why pay more? As a premium generation of cross-shoppers we know mixing high and low is the way to go. Age-related hair issues drive our purchases now. We want easy, fast results and hair that looks healthy, contemporary, thick, natural and sexy. Here are the 10 products not to miss and no, you don't need all 10!

1. Oribe Maximista Thickening Spray ($29, barneys.com). A new breed and best -in-show. Mist this lightweight bodifier over freshly-washed damp hair to add a base of oomph. Then spray a little more on each individual section as you blow-dry. Pumps up skimpy, baby-fine hair and feathery hairlines, makes shoulder-length and longer blunt cuts appear five times fuller without rollers, teasing or extensions.

2. L'Oreal EverCreme Cleansing Conditioner ($6.99, ulta.com). This super gentle, low-lather combo product has a unique ratio of 1/4 moisturizing shampoo to 3/4 conditioner. It pampers sensitive scalps and makes life for short tousled crops or medium length choppy layered cuts easy and fast.

3. Fekkai Controle Ironless Straightening Balm ($25, neimanmarcus.com). This silky light cream delivers sleek polished blow-outs with just a round brush and a good ionic dryer. No need for a follow-up flat-iron step or keratin treatments. The ideal chemical-free solution for frizz-prone hair with minimal heat-styling required and one drop does it all.

5

4. Oscar Blandi Pronto Invisible Dry Shampoo Volumizing Spray ($23, sephora.com). By now you know a dry shampoo stretches time between shampoos and blow-outs for days. This one freshens hair and relies on rice and oat starches to absorb excess oil and wheat proteins to add body. It doubles as a styling product and it goes on clear, not white, so no residue shows. Your hair won't feel coarse, tacky or wiggy. Gives over-processed, dry hair a break from heat-styling and makes sweaty scalp and hair due to a workout, brisk walk or hot sticky weather a non-issue. Flip your hair over and spray the roots before brushing through or just do your bangs and hairline as needed.

5. John Frieda Frizz- Ease Smooth Start Repairing Shampoo and Conditioner ($5.99 each, ulta.com) Love any duo by John Freida! This couple reinforces weak, stressed, damaged, wimpy or processed hair (that's about all of us right?) with silk proteins. Essential oils boost texture, restore shine and a healthier, more youthful look. They feel expensive, but, honestly you never have to spend more on shampoo and conditioner than this.

6. Kiehl's Since 1851 Strengthening and Hydrating Hair Oil-In-Cream ($25 neimanmarcus.com). A leave-in conditioner is always a good idea for very dry, coarse hair especially if it's thick or damaged. This one has triple the usual concentration of emollients like olive fruit and avocado to detangle easily after washing and minimize breakage during styling. The extra moisture and nourishment ramp up flexibility so dull hair gets back its spring and bounce. Even fragile, breakage-prone, coarse hair that's been chemically straightened and/or colored will benefit.

7. Aveeno Active Naturals Nourish + Condition Leave-In Treatment ($6.99, drugstore.com)  This post-shampoo leave-in works as a primer to heal thin neglected hair, split ends, damaged areas and/or breakage at the crown or back of the head. Spray the entire head roots to tips before using any heat or styling products. The wheat proteins protect the hair shaft and smooth over splits while humectants like glycerin lock in moisture.

8. Living Proof Full Thickening Creme ($26, ulta.com). This non-greasy cream gives flat, thinning, dry to very-dry hair lightweight fullness without a crunchy, fake-looking texture. Apply it to wet hair and blow-dry for a tousled airy look. Amazing on choppy bobs and layers

10

9. L'Oreal Paris Elnett Satin Extra Strong Hairspray ($14.99 for 11.2 oz, ulta.com).  This micro-fine legendary hairspray of the 1950s only became available in the U.S. in 2010. I love the way it brushes out easily, holds invisibly, has no sticky residue stiffness, is weatherproof and has the same ageless timeless gold can and glam image we do.

11

10. Davines NouNou Nourishing Repairing Mask with Olive Butter for Dry & Brittle Hair ($25, drugstore.com). My superstar colorist Brad Johns, Color Director of The Saks Fifth Avenue NYC Salon got me hooked on this and I'd rather splurge on this than a week's worth of lattes. A tub lasts forever since you only need a heaping tablespoon dispersed through your hair. If you're a major blond-ista like me know that this turns pale and buttery highlighted hair to silk with one use.

Bumble and Bumble conditioner for curly hair is the best. I guess it can be considered pricy by some — but it’s worth it.

Their shampoo for curly hair is good too–however Deva Curl’s No Poo might even be better and it costs less. For years I used a variety of shampoos and my waves always looked flat–then I tried the No Poo and realized why.

And if your hair is thinning, try Men’s Strength Rogaine. You have to be patient, but it worked for me.

I definitely agree with the selection of the Living Proof Full Thickening Creme. I got a free sample from Sephora and have used it faithfully ever since. My hair is very thin at the crown and using this product and then letting my hair dry naturally has added volume to it. It’s lightweight and easy to apply.

I’ve decided to let my hair color do the natural thing and turn grey. I hate seeing eighty year old women with jet black hair. Looks ridiculous! But I would really like it to have the shine it used to have when I was younger. I was hoping this article would include a product for those of us going natural.

Colleen, I don’t process my hair either, none of these products pertain to my needs. I started using Matrix Biolage Age Rejuvenating Shampoo and Conditioner. They are really expensive but after spending several years trying all kinds of cheap and not so cheap products I said to heck with it, I need something that helps my hair look good, and it does! I get it at the local drugstore. My hair is straight, about a third gray. Or more ;-)

My hair is a great silver color but it goes flat on top. It is cut in a Bob. Hair stylist make it look great but my blow outs go Flat! Suggestions?

I have curly/wavy/frizzy hair. I live in a humid climate and while I don’t like it stick-straight, I like the curl relaxed-looking. I like it to have some “bend” and I can do a decent blow dry, but it would always pouf and frizz within half an hour of styling it. The thing that has given me great hair, and in particular, great frizz resistance, while saving I’d say $1200 per year over what I spent at the salon, was an at-home keratin straightener, Uncurly. I’m 52 and my hair looks the best it has at any time in my life, all from my own effort. I can wear it straight or curly, and it stays. It cut back on drying and styling time by at least half. Total miracle. I buy it at Uncurly.com; I haven’t seen it in stores. Totally changed my life.
