{Tested} Coldfront Cooling System

When FOF Susie Hadas turned 47 she started getting frequent hot flashes. After trying multiple “solutions” that she felt were “risky” or simply didn’t work, Susie created her own–Coldfront (retail value: $49.95), a “personal cooling system,” which includes three chilly palm packs that stay soft at sub-zero temperatures and fit in a chic, sunglass-sized case.

“The moment you feel a hot flash coming on, take a palm pack out of the case and apply it wherever you need it… Relief will be immediate,” says the product’s website. The packs stay cold for the average length of a hot flash, and the case re-cools them within 20 minutes after each use.

9 FOFs put Coldfront to the test. Read on for their reviews.

***Quick Take*** 8 out of 9 testers would recommend the Coldfront Cooling System to other FOFs.

Tell us about the packaging and application. Was this product easy to use?
The packaging is smart and smart looking, easy to tuck into a tote bag or large purse. [It] does not make a mess in any way. [It’s] extremely discreet.

Were the palm packs soft to the touch? Were they absorbent and quick drying?
The palm packs were soft to the touch. They are soft gel material and stay pliable. They do get very frosty and cool, which felt great during a hot flash and on the hot days we had in October. There is a small, thin, black cloth you can use for any moisture that may occur.

How long did the packs stay cool? Did they re-cool quickly in the cooling core?
They stayed cool [for] about 15 minutes. They did re-cool quickly, [in] about 20 minutes in the cooling core.

Was it discreet?
Yes, [it was] very discreet.

Did they relieve your hot flashes?
They did not reduce my hot flashes but they certainly made them more comfortable to deal with.

What was your overall experience with these products?
Very positive.

Would you recommend this product to other FOFs?
Absolutely!

Tell us about the packaging and application. Was this product easy to use?
Very easy. The hard case is similar to a very large eyeglass case. [It’s] a good size for bringing along in a tote or large handbag.

Were they absorbent and quick drying?
The case doesn’t ‘sweat,’ so there’s no danger of water damage to whatever else is in your tote.

How long did the packs stay cool? Did they re-cool quickly in the cooling core?
The packs are very, very cold. I used the included “courtesy cloth” to wrap a pack before using it. I’d replace the thawed one in the case, which I kept handy in my freezer, when I was at home, and it re-froze pretty quickly. I was glad to have a second pack instantly available.

Was it discreet?
Yes.

Did they relieve your hot flashes?
The packs stayed cold for a nice, long time–long enough for hot flashes to subside. One pack was often just enough.

What was your overall experience with these products?
The palm packs offer soothing comfort during the blasting heat of a hot flash, are handy for life’s other aches and pains, are efficient and discreet. It’s expensive, but worth the investment.

Would you recommend this product to other FOFs?

Were the palm packs soft to the touch? Were they absorbent and quick drying?
Yes–they were soft to the touch and absorbent and quick drying.

How long did the packs stay cool? Did they re-cool quickly in the cooling core?
The packs stayed cold for the duration I needed them for. They re-cooled quickly in the cooling core.

Was it discreet?
[It was] not very discreet [because] I held them with my hands.

Did they relieve your hot flashes?
[They are] great for hot flashes.

What was your overall experience with these products?
Pleasant.

Would you recommend this product to other FOFs?
I might recommend it.

Karen SchacknerDix Hills, NY

Tell us about the packaging and application. Was this product easy to use?
[The] product was very portable and easy to use. I carry an average sized pocketbook and it fit. The design was smooth so it didn’t damage anything in my bag, and looked discreet [like] a sunglasses case. It was easy enough to put on my night table before I went to bed and use them as needed when jarred awake from sleep [by hot flashes]!

How long did the packs stay cool?
This was my only negative–they stayed cool for about five minutes. I would have liked them to last a bit longer.

Was it discreet?
People saw me using [it], but I was happy to explain when asked. Everyone’s reaction was, ‘Let me try!’ So, I wouldn’t exactly say they were discreet, even though the packaging was, but that did not matter to me.

Did they relieve your hot flashes?
They were very effective at reducing quick hot flashes; less so, for those that went on a little longer. However, they were certainly more effective, and more pleasant to use, than ice cubes or sticking my head in the freezer.

What was your overall experience with these products?
I think this is a great product with wide appeal and use.

Would you recommend this product to other FOFs?

Tell us about the packaging and application. Was this product easy to use?
The packaging and application was very nice and the product is easy to use, although when you need it at night time it’s a hassle to unzip the case.

Were the palm packs soft to the touch? Were they absorbent and quick drying?
Yes to both.

How long did the packs stay cool? Did they re-cool quickly in the cooling core?
I only needed them [for] 10 minutes at a time and they re-cooled after about 15 minutes.

Was it discreet?
I only used them at home but I think if I used them in the public it wouldn’t be a problem.

Did they relieve your hot flashes?
They gave me instant relief.

What was your overall experience with these products?
I am glad I tried them. I like the size. I also think they would be great for headaches.

Judy BrennerWellington, OH

Tell us about the packaging and application. Was this product easy to use?
I love the [different] sizes included in the package! The little one is usually the one I grab! I put it on the back of my neck and am good to go within minutes of application.

Were the palm packs soft to the touch? Were they absorbent and quick drying?
Yes to both.

How long did the packs stay cool? Did they re-cool quickly in the cooling core?
They stayed cold for quite a long time, definitely over 45 minutes. They re-cooled quickly.

Was it discreet?
I didn’t care if it was discreet or not [because] I only used them at home.

What was your overall experience with these products?
I loved this product, for warding off my hot flashes but could see them having other uses as well.

Would you recommend this product to other FOFs?
Absolutely! I loved them!

Diana WalesAliso Viejo, CA

Tell us about the packaging and application. Was this product easy to use?
The case is sturdy and looks like a little, black clutch, which is good, because it’s too big to carry in my purse. The product was easy to use, however the fact that it required 12 hours of cooling meant having to choose between using it during the day or at night. It would be nice if it came with a second freezing pack so one could be in the freezer and the other in the case, alternating for day and night.

Were the palm packs soft to the touch? Were they absorbent and quick drying?
They were very soft to the touch. They’re not absorbent, but they don’t ‘sweat’ like regular freezer packs often do, and can easily be wiped off.

How long did the packs stay cool? Did they re-cool quickly in the cooling core?
The packs stayed cool for about 15-20 minutes, and re-cooled in about the same amount of time, so they could be alternated as needed.

Was it discreet?
Yes. The packs tucked nicely into my palm or my bra. Because of the small size, you need to rub them around to cover larger areas if needed. The case itself is a bit bulky, but I understand that is necessary [in order to] to maintain the cold.

Did they relieve your hot flashes?
Yes, my hot flashes were somewhat shorter and definitely more comfortable.

What was your overall experience with these products?
I liked the palm packs and the fact they stay cool for a long time. I chose to keep them by my bed to help with night sweats. I can avoid running to the freezer and I get back to sleep faster.

Would you recommend this product to other FOFs?
Yes. It does work and could be good for women who need quick cooling during the day. It’s also nice on a bedside table. It is somewhat expensive, but would make a nice Christmas gift for the woman who has everything–including hot flashes!

For about 20 minutes, but didn’t re-cool to the original temperature.

Was it discreet?
Yes.

Did they relieve your hot flashes?
Yes.

What was your overall experience with these products?
I really like using them. I carry it in my purse. I also have panic attacks which they help with, too.
