{Giveaway} A Clever Compact to Color Your Lips ‘Luscious’

How many times have you left home with the wrong tube of lipstick, or thought the color you applied was just all wrong?

Mary Sloat, a-model-turned-entrepreneur, loves creating custom lipstick shades, so she designed the Petal Palette ($18), a compact with mixing/application brush that holds six of your favorite colors.

Read how Mary came up with her cool creation and enter to win your very own Petal Palette. 10 FOFs will win!

To enter to win a Petal Palette, comment below by answering the question: What’s your favorite shade of lipstick?

How old are you? Where do you live?

I’m 54 and I live a ferry ride away from Seattle.

Tell us a bit about your career.

I’m finally doing what I’ve always dreamed of doing—running my own business. Through the years, I’ve worked in many different jobs—as a copywriter at Microsoft, creating content for Starwave (a Paul Allen start-up), teaching English and modeling in Japan, and bookkeeping for a non-profit. I feel like many of my previous jobs have helped to prepare me for this one—owning a business and introducing an exciting product!

What prompted you to design and launch the Petal Palette?

Make-up is so personal. How can any company sell me a perfect palette of colors that works just for me? I think we all like to find just the right combination of brands and colors.

When I was modeling in Japan, the models carried empty lip color compacts that we filled with our favorite colors. I brought several compacts back to the U.S., but eventually they fell apart. Since there wasn’t a quality product on the market here, so I decided to make one. The Petal Palette has a tight latch that won’t come open in your purse, a mixing well, and a brush for creating your own colors.

How exactly does the product work and how big is it?

The Petal Palette is a slim, curvy compact measuring 4 inches by 2 ¾ inches. To fill it, first scoop out the color at the bottom of lipstick tubes you’re ready to toss, or use a knife to cut off ½-inch from the top of your fave lipsticks, then smoosh the colors into the palette. Potted lip glosses also can be used.

What are the benefits of having multiple colors? How do we ‘mix’ the colors?

I used to dash out the door to a meeting and only later realize I didn’t have the right lip color with me. Now I always have a handy range of color options and brands, and can create one custom color for the morning, one for the afternoon and one for an evening out. What’s more personal than that?

Do we need to wait until a lipstick we love is almost gone before putting it into the Petal Palette?

Oh no. You should see the collection of lipsticks I have that are flat on top. When I get a new color, I can’t wait to add it to my Petal Palette.

Any lipstick tips or secrets for FOF women?

My natural lip color has faded as I’ve gotten older and sometimes just a touch of lip color can brighten my face. If you don’t usually wear lip color, give it a try!

i love pink because you can wear it all year long, it goes with the black outfits i like to wear which are either dreses , slacks with a black shirt, or just a tee shirt and a old pair of jeans, also you can wear it so well when you are dressed up and it always looks good, clean and gives you a nice pouty pretty lip.

Hi Lauren, You might try mixing the tawny colors you like with a little pink. That will keep the pink from being too bright and brighten your tawny at the same time.

Hi Teresa, My daughter suggested I try a lip primer. It’s a neutral, base color you apply before your lip color. I believe it makes lip color last longer. I often forget to apply it first, but I think it’s supposed to help.

Hi Cindy, I wonder if, instead of that you’re buying the wrong color, maybe you’re not used to seeing yourself in lipstick? Start with a light color, pink or coral, and try adding a bit of another color until you get a shade that feels right for you.

Corals are my favorite lip colors. I choose to leave my hair gray and I need color on my face and lips. My all time favorite lipstick was Coty 24. It did stay on all day and it was about 5 dollars a tube. For some reason Coty stopped selling lipstick. If someone could find their formula and market it, they could make a fortune. I’m still looking for lip color that will stay on like the Coty product did.
