{Giveaway} A Clever Compact to Color Your Lips ‘Luscious’

How many times have you left home with the wrong tube of lipstick, or thought the color you applied was just all wrong?

Mary Sloat, a-model-turned-entrepreneur, loves creating custom lipstick shades, so she designed the Petal Palette ($18), a compact with mixing/application brush that holds six of your favorite colors.

Read how Mary came up with her cool creation and enter to win your very own Petal Palette. 10 FOFs will win!

To enter to win a Petal Palette, comment below by answering the question: What’s your favorite shade of lipstick?

How old are you? Where do you live?

I’m 54 and I live a ferry ride away from Seattle.

Tell us a bit about your career.

I’m finally doing what I’ve always dreamed of doing—running my own business. Through the years, I’ve worked in many different jobs—as a copywriter at Microsoft, creating content for Starwave (a Paul Allen start-up), teaching English and modeling in Japan, and bookkeeping for a non-profit. I feel like many of my previous jobs have helped to prepare me for this one—owning a business and introducing an exciting product!

What prompted you to design and launch the Petal Palette?

Make-up is so personal. How can any company sell me a perfect palette of colors that works just for me? I think we all like to find just the right combination of brands and colors.

When I was modeling in Japan, the models carried empty lip color compacts that we filled with our favorite colors. I brought several compacts back to the U.S., but eventually they fell apart. Since there wasn’t a quality product on the market here, so I decided to make one. The Petal Palette has a tight latch that won’t come open in your purse, a mixing well, and a brush for creating your own colors.

How exactly does the product work and how big is it?

The Petal Palette is a slim, curvy compact measuring 4 inches by 2 ¾ inches. To fill it, first scoop out the color at the bottom of lipstick tubes you’re ready to toss, or use a knife to cut off ½-inch from the top of your fave lipsticks, then smoosh the colors into the palette. Potted lip glosses also can be used.

What are the benefits of having multiple colors? How do we ‘mix’ the colors?

I used to dash out the door to a meeting and only later realize I didn’t have the right lip color with me. Now I always have a handy range of color options and brands, and can create one custom color for the morning, one for the afternoon and one for an evening out. What’s more personal than that?

Do we need to wait until a lipstick we love is almost gone before putting it into the Petal Palette?

Oh no. You should see the collection of lipsticks I have that are flat on top. When I get a new color, I can’t wait to add it to my Petal Palette.

Any lipstick tips or secrets for FOF women?

My natural lip color has faded as I’ve gotten older and sometimes just a touch of lip color can brighten my face. If you don’t usually wear lip color, give it a try!

  • Terry Miller

For several years, I’ve gotten compliments on L’Oreal’s “The Colour of Hope” which is kind of a mauve-y pink.

  • Judy vR

I have darkish blonde hair and a light complexion. I like the brownish colour lipstick

  • Deanna

I like light rose or plum shades but feel I am in a rut with all my makeup.

    • http://thepetalpalette.com Mary Sloat

Hi Deanna, If you’re reaching for the same colors all the time, why not break your routine by combining a few of your favorite lip colors. It’s fun and you just might love the results.

  • Theresa Lemay

I like anything from pinks to plums no oranges or browns though

  • Teresa Graves

I like rose colored lipsticks. I’m looking for something that won’t dry out my already too dry lips.

    • http://thepetalpalette.com Mary Sloat

Hi Teresa, My daughter suggested I try a lip primer. It’s a neutral, base color you apply before your lip color. I believe it makes lip color last longer. I often forget to apply it first, but I think it’s supposed to help.

  • Kim S.

My favorite shade of lipstick is the darker shades (burgundy, purple, maroon).

  • Dorothy borgese

I like corals and peach colors

  • http://Fabulousover50 Ianete

My favorite shade of lipstick is Schiap by Nars. It is a bright, bright pink verging on fushia. It makes me happy.

    • http://thepetalpalette.com Mary Sloat

Bright colors make me happy, too! I think we carry ourselves most confidently when we can step out the door wearing what makes us feel good, not necessarily what other people think we should wear.

  • Sharon Siqueiros

I’m a redhead and I blend a couple of colors to make my fav. For example Ellis Faas L101 red w/a coppery color 230 Captivate by Cover Girl

    • http://thepetalpalette.com Mary Sloat

I love that you blend your own colors!

  • Maria Goulart

Red is my favourite shade of lipstick… goes with everything!

  • AJB

I like neutral tones either in pink or orange depending on the color of the clothes I’m wearing.

  • Bettie

A nice mauve looks good on me no matter what I am wearing. I am pale with blue undertones in my skin. I find that the mauve comes close to matching the shade of the edges of my lips. I think that is why it works so well.

  • Mary Ann

    My favorite shade is mauve.

  • Soledad

    Teak Rose from Revlon

  • Shirley Fortune-Feitler

    light purples

  • Cathy Burnett

My favorite right now is by Michael Kors and is called Dame.

  • http://www.faboverfifty.com Michel Brown

My favorite shade of lipstick is pink. Pink is feminine and compliments my skin tone. I like a bright pink as that brightens my mood!! I NEVER leave the house without my lipstick or my eyebrows!!!!

    • http://thepetalpalette.com Mary Sloat

Hi Michel, Me, too! Eyebrows are key, especially since they’ve gotten thinner as I’ve gotten older. Just a little filling in and I look years younger.

  • http://Poll&Giveaway KIM SMITH

My favorite shade is light Pink.

  • carol c

I am looking for a new best color. I like shades in the rose family.

    • http://thepetalpalette.com Mary Sloat

Hi Carol, Try starting with a favorite rose color and mixing it with a bit of another color that you already have. You may find you have plenty of color options already. You can be the artist who creates the color that’s just right for you.

  • Carol Melodia

    Pink!

  • sandy

warm pinks work well with my coloring.

  • Karen

My favorite shade of lipstick is a soft sheer pink.

  • Cindy

I’m always buying the wrong color.

    • http://thepetalpalette.com Mary Sloat

Hi Cindy, I wonder if, instead of that you’re buying the wrong color, maybe you’re not used to seeing yourself in lipstick? Start with a light color, pink or coral, and try adding a bit of another color until you get a shade that feels right for you.

  • Lisa Hetsko

Favorite shade – it use to be red, every shade of red, but I now seem to favor Rose – not pink, not red but usually a rose on the darker side. No favorite brand, always buying & trying different ones.

  • Diane H Hinkle

Corals are my favorite lip colors. I choose to leave my hair gray and I need color on my face and lips. My all time favorite lipstick was Coty 24. It did stay on all day and it was about 5 dollars a tube. For some reason Coty stopped selling lipstick. If someone could find their formula and market it, they could make a fortune. I’m still looking for lip color that will stay on like the Coty product did.

  • http://eden333.blogspot.com Kathy Fleming

My favorite shade of lipstick is Lavish by Younique. It’s pink and sparkly.

  • Ethel Johnson

My favorite shade of lipstick is Lip Lacquer Ruby Kisses. It is kind of pink and soft enough for dark skin.

  • http://karlaakins.com Karla Akins

I can’t pick just one shade! But I tend toward either browns/neutrals or pinks/berries. I love this product! One of those that makes you think, “now why didn’t I think of that?”!!!

    • http://thepetalpalette.com Mary Sloat

Thanks, Karla! That’s what I think, too. Once women try this product, they won’t know how they lived without it. Keep working on your own “ah ha” idea!

  • joyce saffarano

pink is the best color to wear all year long. it just makes me feel brighter, and happier when i wear it, especially with a long sweater and jeans.

  • joyce saffarano

pink is a great color, it goes with everything from black outfits for day time, right through the evening casual wear, a nice warm dark sweater, a pair of jeans, and some great boots. pink is a happy color that makes me feel alive and kicking at 51.

  • http://pamigirl126@yahoo.com joyce saffarano

i love pink because you can wear it all year long, it goes with the black outfits i like to wear which are either dreses , slacks with a black shirt, or just a tee shirt and a old pair of jeans, also you can wear it so well when you are dressed up and it always looks good, clean and gives you a nice pouty pretty lip.

  • Lauren

I have been using tawny browns….would like to find a pink that is not cotton candy or mauve-y….

    • http://thepetalpalette.com Mary Sloat

Hi Lauren, You might try mixing the tawny colors you like with a little pink. That will keep the pink from being too bright and brighten your tawny at the same time.
