10May   {Giveaway} Paula Dorf Lipstick in Mermaid

Kate Walsh (left) , Heidi Klum (center) and Cyndi Lauper (right) all wear orange lipstick.

—————————————————————————————————

Orange you glad tangerine tones, copper colors and peachy pigments are the hottest lipstick shades for summer 2012? Okay, okay...we weren’t so thrilled either. That is--until two celeb makeup artists (and FOFs!) Carolyn Diamond and Paula Dorf convinced us otherwise. “Orange lipstick can be one of the most powerful weapons in any woman’s beauty arsenal. Yet many women assume they can't wear it,” says Carolyn, who says she’s proudly puckering up in peach this season... and you can too. Read on for Carolyn and Paula’s orange lipstick dos and don’ts. Then, enter to win Paula Dorf’s Lip Color Cream in “Mermaid" by leaving a comment, below.

—————————————————————————————————

...consider your skin tone when choosing the perfect orange shade. “If you have pink skin undertones, opt for a coral shade with blue undertones,” says Carolyn. “Olive-complexioned FOFs look great in a lip color that has more of an orange base. Women with darker skin tones look great in rich burnt orange tones.”

...be precise when applying. “A bright orange lipstick should never be applied casually,” says Carolyn. “Also, always be sure to check your teeth and blot your lips.

...match your lip liner to your lipstick. “Your lip liner shade should either exactly match the orange lipstick hue or be a darker, complimentary tone,” says Carolyn.

..keep the rest of your makeup simple. “The important thing to remember when wearing an orange-hued lipstick or gloss, is that the lips are the eye catcher,” says Carolyn. Paula agrees: “Apply a softer, more natural color blush on your cheeks since you want most of the attention directed to your lips. Even a delicate bronzer would look great.” Carolyn recommends: Glo Minerals gloBlush in Papaya and Glo Minerals Bronzer in Sunkiss. “These shades look great on almost all skin tones,” she says.

—————————————————————————————————

...wear heavy eyeliner. “Opt for a brown eye pencil and smudge it to defuse the intensity. A dash of copper or gold dust to your eyelids (just enough to catch the light) can be sexy and playful,” says Carolyn. “Using mascara, play up those lashes, ladies (black for brunettes, brown for blondes and redheads), and don’t forget to apply it to your bottom lashes--it opens up your eyes.

...match your lips to your outfit. “Your new rust-colored maxi dress may be gorgeous, but don’t choose the same shade for your your lips,” says Carolyn. “For your lips, choose the color that is best suited for your skin color.”

...try this trend if you have thin lips. “Orange can tend to make lips look smaller,” says Carolyn.

Did anyone comment on the appearance of your hair?
No.

Would you continue using these products? Why or why not?
Yes. I can't wait to continue using it. I really feel like it is healing my hair from the inside out. The shampoo is worth their cost because I only use a dime-size squirt of the shampoo [each time] and it is all organic. I used the scented oil mixture [Complexe5] for about five minutes, once a week before I shampoo. I only use enough on scalp to cover and no more. It has an aromatherapy-like scent. I used the RF80 vials once a week and they really made a difference in the way my hair felt--it is softer, fuller and just looks healthier.

Would you recommend these products to other FOFs?
Yes, definitely.

12April   {Giveaway} Brush On Block

—————————————————————————————————

FOF Susan Posnick is giving away her brilliant Brush On Block. Enter to win by answering in the comments below: Have you used sun protection your whole life?

FOF Susan Posnick spent her early adult years suntanning and teaching on the island of St. Croix. There, she met a well-known NYC advertising photographer, Wendi Hilti, who became her mentor.  “We would sit in the afternoons and drink our Campari and sodas, and he’d say, ‘what are you going to do when you get off this godforsaken island?’” recalls Susan. “I’d say, ‘I don’t know. Teaching kids is not my thing. I’ve always been about fashion and beauty. But, I grew up in a small town and have no idea where to start.” Wendi introduced Susan to his fashion connections in New York City and helped jumpstart her career in beauty.

Susan spent the next thirty years as a professional makeup artist, working on celebrities such as Cindy Crawford and Rene Russo and eventually became the personal makeup artist for Mary Kay.

While Susan had the good fortune of meeting Wendi in St. Croix, she had the not-so-good fortune of developing skin cancer on her face, which was diagnosed in her 50s but is most likely the result of her years spent in the Caribbean sun.

“What was the size of a pinhead on the outside, was the size of a quarter underneath,” says Susan of her melanoma. “Fortunately, I caught it in the earliest possible phase.”

After a successful operation to remove the cancer, Susan made it her personal mission to develop fuss-free sun protection that every woman could incorporate into her beauty routine. “When I got skin cancer, I was allergic to all the chemical sunscreens,” says Susan. “I really wanted to make a mineral product that felt good on the skin, was portable and easy to use.” In 2001, she launched ColorFlo, a refillable brush with mineral foundation that also protects the skin from UV rays. ColorFlo was a retail hit but Susan felt the product was limited to just women.

This year, Susan launched Brush On Block, which, like ColoFlo is a refillable brush with mineral sun protection. However, Brush On Block contains very little color pigment and appears transparent on the skin. It has an SPF of 30 and stays on in the water for 80 minutes. “I wanted to create a product that would work for the whole family. My goal is that people will wake up every day, wash their faces, brush their teeth and brush on block.”

10April   {Tested} LaRocca 24k Gold Anti-Aging Trio

—————————————————————————————————

All products from the LaRocca Skincare line are flecked with real 24K gold particles that “promote electron transfer,” with the metal ions found naturally in the skin, according to LaRocca. This causes “cell turnover,” and skin that is “smooth and rejuvenated with a youthful glow.”

Five FOFs tested a trio of skincare products from the LaRocca line (value: $195), including an Exfoliating Cream Cleanser, Daily Hydrating Moisturizer and Firming Eye Cream. Were these products the gold standard or...fools gold? Read on to see what the testers thought.

Yes, same as my usual routine.

Did you feel a difference in your skin?
Yes, [it feels] very soft and dewy.

Did they reduce the appearance of wrinkles and puffiness around your eyes? Did they increase your skin’s moisture and elasticity?
Skin looks smoother. Elasticity is improved and there is more moisture. It also reduced puffiness--the eye cream is fantastic.

{Click here to read all the reviews!}

Would you continue using these products? Why or why not?
Yes. [They were] easy to use, made my skin smoother, and I like the smell. The cleanser has small particles that made it feel like I was getting a mini facial treatment, but was not harsh. The eye cream is very rich and soothing. My favorite was the moisturizer. I didn't want to put on makeup because my skin felt so good.

Yes. They were very smooth, extremely gentle and had no perfume-y smell.

Did you feel a difference in your skin?
[The products] made my skin very soft. No burning sensations after use.

Did they reduce the appearance of wrinkles and puffiness around your eyes? Did they increase your skin’s moisture and elasticity?
The wrinkles are [still] there, and I don't believe that there is any cream in the world that can make them go away. It was more of a cleansing regime and the firming eye cream added extra moisture to the eye area and reduced puffiness.

Would you continue using these products? Why or why not?
Yes, and I plan to get the toner too.

Would you recommend these products to other FOF members?
Yes, especially for those with extremely sensitive skin.

10April   {Test This} Mai Couture Papier Foundation

—————————————————————————————————

Mai Couture Makeup’s new Foundation Powder Papier (retail value: $24) comes in a pocket-sized booklet with 50 one-time-use sheets--ideal for makeup application and touch ups while you're on the go. The powder paper comes in three shades: fair glow, golden glow and nude glow. You don’t need a makeup brush, which, according to Mai Couture, “often carries bacteria that can irritate sensitive skin.” Instead, tear off a sheet, sweep it over your face and buff and smooth out the powder to finish.

The mineral-based powder is also paraben and talc free. “It softens the appearance of imperfections, evens out skin tone and controls oil without the mess.” Sounds good on paper...but what do you think FOFs?

10 FOFs will test it. Click here to find out more about Mai Couture Foundation Powder Papier, and then leave a comment below for a chance to test it.

03April   {Tested} Cosmedix Cell ID

—————————————————————————————————

Cosmedix Cell ID Intensive Defense Serum is loaded with antioxidants, amino acids, enzymes and “the ultimate mitochondria extract,” which “energizes skin cells,” and in turn, helps to “reduces visible wrinkle depth...fine lines and...age spots,” according to the Cosmedix website.

But all those promises don’t come cheap--Cosmedix Cell ID retails for $100 per half ounce. We wanted to know: Is this product really worth the hefty price tag, or is it just a bottle of bull? We sent it out to 5 beauty testers who reported back, below.

**Quick take: 2 out of 5 testers would recommend Cosmedix Cell ID Intensive Defense Serum to other FOFs.**

Lynda Christian – Hazelwood, MO

Was this product easy to use?
Yes. The dispenser was a pump so you could measure it out more precisely.  However, toward the end [it became difficult to dispense so] I took the pump out and tried to shake out the remaining amount.

Did you notice any changes with your skin?
It reduced the appearance of the age and sun spots I have on my face. I started to see noticeable fading.

{click here to read all the reviews!}

Did you notice a difference in how your skin felt?
My face felt well hydrated and smooth, but [it could have been because] I exfoliated a few times a week as part of my normal routine.

Did you notice a difference in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles? I wish I had seen a difference in the fine lines around my eyes and the deeper wrinkles in my forehead, but I did not.

Would you continue using this product?  Why or why not?
No. It costs $100 for a very small amount. I used a dime-size portion, twice a day (per the instructions) which only allows you about a month's supply. Also, I thought the color was an ugly yellow--almost like phlegm when you have a cold.  I was also put off by the fragrance.  There were times when I felt almost nauseous to the point where I didn’t want to use it. I asked my husband to smell it and he said, ‘It's not that bad.’

Would you recommend it to other FOF members?
I would not recommend it.

—————————————————————————————————

Christine M. Quigley – Lakewood, CO

Was this product easy to use?
Yes.

Did you notice any changes with your skin?
Minimal changes. The texture improved slightly.

Did you notice a difference in how your skin felt?
It felt a little drier, but smooth. It really dried out my skin when I applied a heavier layer--in fact, it produced dry flaky patches. I still have one above my upper lip.

Did you notice a difference in the appearance of fine lines or age spots?
No--I did not notice a difference.

Would you continue using this product?  Why or why not?
No, I did not feel it was that effective, and the stem inside the bottle broke off after two weeks of use.

Would you recommend it to other FOF members?
No.

—————————————————————————————————

Constance Simon -- Winston Salem, NC

Was this product easy to use?
Yes, very easy.

Did you notice any changes with your skin?
Immediately! I noticed a slight tightening of my skin. [It was] not overbearing but certainly noticeable.

Did you notice a difference in how your skin felt?
YES! The appearance, not so much, but the feel--indeed. My skin is so incredibly soft. [When] my son kisses me on my cheek, [he] compliments me on how soft my skin is...like a baby's! Even my fiance thinks so. I do appreciate that. My skin is a combination of oily and dry, but when I use Cell ID it is perfect--it's not oily nor dry. I don't even have to use a moisturizer with it.

Did you notice a difference in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles or age spots?
A small difference in the fine lines under and around my eyes. Others seemed to notice the difference more than I did. I don't have any age spots, so I can’t comment on that. I don't have many wrinkles except on my brow and I did notice my skin was slightly smoother, there.

Would you continue using this product?  Why or why not?
I will continue to use this product and will actually buy it again from time to time when I can afford it. I like having soft supple skin. I also felt like I got good UV protection from it as well.

Would you recommend it to other FOFs?
Yes. It does have a slight medicine smell, which dissipates quickly. It’s slightly expensive, but worth the results.

—————————————————————————————————

Sydney Barrows--New York, N.Y.

Was this product easy to use?
Yes, but if you push the pump down the whole way, it dispenses too much. Be careful to not push it down all the way! The texture was lovely, it spread nicely, and you could do your entire face and the top part of your neck with 2/3 of a pump. One more pump will take care of the rest of the neck and the chest--perfect!

Did you notice any changes with your skin?
After about ten days, I noticed that the texture of my skin was smoother. It also looked healthier--there really was a noticeable difference.

Did you notice a difference in the way your skin felt?
It was definitely smoother, and my makeup went on more smoothly too. It acted like a primer, but it also improved your skin at the same time.

Did you notice a difference in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles or age spots?
Because the skin was smoother, the fine lines were a bit less noticeable, but it did nothing for wrinkles or age spots that I could discern.

Would you continue using this product?  Why or why not?
For $30 or under--definitely, yes.  If it was more than that and I was doing well--probably yes.

Would you recommend it to other FOF members?
Yes, if you have fairly nice skin and mild wrinkles, it will definitely enhance the overall appearance of your skin, make it look smoother and healthier, and make the fine lines less noticeable. I'm not sure how effective it would be for someone who had badly damaged skin and/or bad wrinkles.

—————————————————————————————————

Rhonda Grant--Yorktown, Indiana

Was this product easy to use?
Extremely easy. It was slightly tacky when first applied, but the sticky feel rapidly dissipates to a pleasant smoothness. There was a mild medicinal odor, although it was not at all offensive and disappeared once application was complete.

Did you notice any changes with your skin?
Yes, some. My skin seemed to retain moisture better. It felt extremely soft, and the usual oiliness seemed to lessen.

Did you notice a difference in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles or age spots?
I did not see a large difference in fine lines, wrinkles or age spots.  Actually, the pores on my between-the-eye area and on my nose were more noticeable while using the product.

Would you continue using this product?  Why or why not?
Probably not.  The [minimal] changes were not worth the price.

Would you recommend it to other FOF members?
I do not believe I could, with good conscience, recommend this product to others.

03April   {Test This} Dr. Dennis Gross Extra Strength Alpha Beta Peel

—————————————————————————————————

Dr. Dennis Gross, MD, is a renowned New York dermatologist with a roster of celebrity patients. In the early 90s, he launched his first at-home product, the Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel, designed to bring his signature, skin perfecting formula to the rest of us. Since then, his skin empire has expanded to hundreds of products, but the Alpha Beta Peel is still his #1 best-seller. Now, he's launched a new Extra Strength version (retail value: $88 for 30 applications), designed to help those women who haven't responded to other peels.

The two-step peel comes in the form of two containers of pre-soaked towelettes (similar to makeup remover pads.) Step one contains a proprietary blend of five different acids, including Alpha and Beta Hydroxy that Dr. Dennis Gross promises will minimize the appearance of pores, wrinkles and fine lines, and leave you with firmer, brighter, more even skin. Step two contains retinol, natural antioxidants--such as Resveratrol and green tea extract--and Genistien, an ingredient in soy extract that boosts collagen production and also soothes the skin. Sounds apeeling but does it actually work?

6 FOFs will test it. Click here to find out more about Dr. Dennis Gross’ Extra Strength Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel, and then leave a comment below for a chance to test it.

27March   {Tested} Glytone Anti-Aging Trio

—————————————————————————————————

Glytone’s new anti-aging set--a serum, daytime moisturizing cream and an eye cream--will “significantly reduce the visible signs of aging,” according to Glytone’s marketing materials. The products all contain a patented glycolic acid system, formulated to be as effective as the glycolic exfoliating treatments you’d find in a doctor’s office. The products are also packed with Vitamins C and E and boast some unconventional antioxidants like Red Tea Flavonoids and Licorice Extract, said to “offset everyday environmental damage from sun exposure, pollution and stress.”

Six FOFs put the $258-value set to the test. Was it three cheers for this trio?
**Quick take: 6 / 6 testers would recommend Glytone’s Anti-Aging Trio**

Eoan Russell - Jersey City, NJ

Was this product easy to use?
Extremely easy. After cleansing with the mild gel cleanser, the anti-aging serum, cream and eye cream were light and easy to apply.

Did you notice any changes in your skin?
My skin appeared softer and smoother. The fine lines on my nose appeared to decrease in size. I have very sensitive skin and most products make me break out, but not with these products.

{click here to read all the reviews!}

What changes did you notice?
I noticed that after application, my enlarged pores appeared smaller. My skin became smoother and the fine lines around my nose seemed less pronounced.

Did you think these products helped to eliminate fine lines wrinkles, and uneven skin tones and textures?
The product did not eliminate uneven skin tones or fine lines, but made the unevenness appear less uneven and my enlarged pores seem smaller.

Would you continue using these products – why or why not?
Yes.

Would you recommend them to other FOF members?
Yes. I saw so much change over the short period of time that I used this product, that I’ve stopped using my previous anti-aging products.

—————————————————————————————————

Ruta Fox – Greenville, SC

Were these products easy to use?
Yes. The instructions were clear. Nothing unusual.

Did you notice any changes in your skin? (Tone, feel, quality, moisture, wrinkles, etc.)
Yes, I thought my skin improved a lot with visible changes.

What changes did you notice?
My skin was clearer, tighter, refreshed and more renewed. I seemed to get less pimples too.

Do you think these products helped to eliminate fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin tone and texture?
Yes, my skin looked smoother. It was more toned and had a better texture.

Would you continue using these products? Why or why not?
Yes, they definitely work. My only concern was that for the price, it wasn’t really a "luxurious" experience. There was no fragrance in the products and the serum was a little "watery.” Additionally, the caps on the two bottles of serum and moisturizer were interchangeable. I put the wrong one on the serum and could not get it off, so the glass dropper on the serum broke.

Would you recommend them to other FOF members?
Yes, it’s a good line for people who don't want any fragrance in their products.

—————————————————————————————————

Lelani Rogers - Fayetteville, GA

Were these products easy to use?
Yes, very easy.

Did you notice any changes in your skin? (Tone, feel, quality, moisture, wrinkles, etc.)
Yes.

What changes did you notice?
After 3 weeks, my skin started to look different--more clear and clean.

Do you think these products helped to eliminate fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin tone and texture?
I can't say that it eliminated any wrinkles, maybe fine baby wrinkles. It did not get rid of age spots, but overall it definitely improved the texture, tone, look and feel of my face.

Would you continue using these products? Why or why not?
I will definitely finish what I have left. The cost is high. I probably would not spend that kind of money for 6-8 weeks of skincare, but maybe, because I definitely see improvement.

Would you recommend them to other FOF members?
Yes. You have to be disciplined--wash and apply 3 products in the morning. In the evening wash your face again and apply the eye cream.

—————————————————————————————————

Cynthia Knisley - Sparta, MI

Were these products easy to use?
Yes.

Did you notice any changes in your skin? (Tone, feel, quality, moisture, wrinkles, etc.)
My skin felt smoother to the touch. I believe the glycolic acid removed the dead dry skin cells and helped my other products to penetrate better.

What changes did you notice?
Improved appearance of existing wrinkles and a brighter, clearer, younger appearance.

Do you think these products helped to eliminate fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin tone and texture?
I think it helped prevent further aging.

Would you continue using these products? Why or why not?
Most certainly.

Would you recommend them to other FOF members?
Yes, as long as they don't have sensitive skin. Glycolic acid can be harsh on sensitive skin.

—————————————————————————————————

Sue Roberts - Polk City, FL

Were these products easy to use?
Yes, very easy.

Did you notice any changes in your skin? (Tone, feel, quality, moisture, wrinkles, etc.)
The overall quality of my skin has improved.

What changes did you notice?
Fine lines are less noticeable, deep wrinkles have improved and the area around my eyes appears to be brighter. The biggest difference is in the evenness of the tone. My acne scars, sun damage and age spots seem to have improved the most.

Would you continue using these products? Why or why not?
I would love to continue to use these products, and have made an appointment with the dermatologist to try and do just that. Based on the improvement in my skin, I believe it would be worth the investment.

Would you recommend them to other FOF members?
I would highly recommend them to anyone willing to put in the time. You will not have drastic or immediate results, but you will get results. We took before and after pictures and there is a definite difference.

Sharron Ledrick - Richland Hills, TX

Were these products easy to use?
Yes.

Did you notice any changes in your skin? (Tone, feel, quality, moisture, wrinkles, etc.)
Very few.

What changes did you notice?
None significant enough to point out.

Do you think these products helped to eliminate fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin tone and texture?
Not really. I liked the eye cream the best--it seemed to glide on. I noticed some slight peeling from the other two products.

Would you continue using these products? Why or why not?
I would continue using the eye cream. The other two products, I am not so sure.

Would you recommend them to other FOF members?
Yes, I would. My skin is very dry, and this might be the reason I couldn’t see a big difference. One complaint--the red paint on the anti-aging serum bottle was peeling off and got on my face.

27March   {Test This} Gray Disappear

—————————————————————————————————

“There’s no reason for your grays to show with so many excellent touch-up products on the market,” says Lois Joy Johnson, a beauty and fashion director for over 30 years.

Enter Gray Disappear (retail value: $15.99)  from Generation Klean. This touch-up hair mascara comes in four shades (gold, blaze, espresso and onyx) and according to the company, it “will cover grays in seconds...no muss, no fuss.”

The product is also rich in antioxidants and vitamin E and it’s paraben-, sulfate- and propylene glycol-free. It’s not permanent and “rinses out with just shampoo.” Sounds like answer to our hairs...er...prayers. But, let’s get to the root of it:  Is Gray Disappear a wonder wand or a washout?

7 FOFs will test it. Click here to find out more about Gray Disappear, and then leave a comment below for a chance to test it.

13March   {Test This} Couture Gel Nail Polish Kit

It seemed like gel manicures were the answer to our prayers--the chip-free, smudge-less gel polish dries in two minutes flat and maintains an unworldly shine...for weeks! We’re sold on the concept, but not so much on the $40-per-application salon bill.

So, when we heard that Couture Gel Nail Polish released a kit which provides you with “everything you need for a salon-quality gel nail polish manicure at home”--we couldn’t help but wonder: was this the perfect ten?

The kit retails for $129 and contains 3 shades of polish, a base coat, a top coat, a salon nail care kit, a zippered carrying case, a UV lamp and an instructional DVD. The manufacturer promises “easy application,” a “2-minute dry time that results in diamond-hard nails,” “a 3-week hold that continues to look fresh until you take it off,” and “no smearing, chipping, smudging, or scratching off — ever.” Did they nail it with this one? We want to know! 7 FOFs will test this at-home gel manicure kit.
