30November   {Street Spotted} Paris, where every week is Fashion Week

A photo essay on French style by Geri, who yearns to be French in her next life.

I think everyone in Paris is tres chic, from the bebes in their hand-knit sweaters…

to the octogenarian who tilts her beret just so.

The moment I stepped into Miller et Bertaux, on Rue Ferdinand Duval,  I knew I was going to buy something.  I am wearing my purchases, a featherweight raincoat in eggplant...

and a gorgeous silk dress and scarf—with an ever-so-slightly different pattern—that designer Francis Miller adjusts perfectly.

Francis’s friend Katherine stops by his shop to say hello, wearing a belted denim skirt with a short leather jacket, that’s definitely on trend.

Saleswomen Yvette does justice to her employer’s clothes.

…nor this one, which teams a leather shirt jacket with a short-sleeved open sweater. “This is a hot trend,” said FOF Frenchwoman Cecile, who I spotted checking into a flight to New York.

So, my views are clear, but what do you think of French style?
30November   {Giveaway} Jouany Perfumes
Christophe Jouany is giving away two his Jouany Perfumes, inspired by exotic travel destinations ($125 each). One FOF will win "Marrakech," the other will win "St. Barthélemy." Enter to win by answering in the comments below: Which fragrance would you most want to try?

If you're looking for a fragrance that drives FOF men crazy--who better to ask than an FOF man? "I was in touch with my sense of smell since I was young," says Christophe Jouany, the FOF perfumer behind Jouany Fragrances, a collection that launched this fall at Henri Bendel and is already turning heads...er...noses.

Christophe spent most his life as a fashion photographer, snapping shots for Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire and Glamour. (He was even the official photographer for the royal family of Jordan.) A few years ago, while on a photo shoot in Miami, Christophe wandered into a store that sold essential oils. "I was like a kid in a candy store," he says.

Right then and there, Christophe created the prototype of his first scent. "Everyone kept asking me what it was and where they could get it--even my cab driver," he says. A long-time perfumer friend confirmed the scent was extremely well structured, and Christophe got to work manufacturing it for mass market. "It was like building a machine engine," he says. "So many moving parts." The biggest obstacle, according to Christophe, was finding an inexpensive source for essential oils. "When you use essential oils in a fragrances, it's like the difference between an expensive wine and a cheap wine," he says.

Christophe believes that the sense of smell is the most underrated. "When people come back from a trip, they talk about what they did, but not the smell of the air," he says. Christophe's collection aims to bottle the "scent memories," a person has when they visit exotic destinations. He is creating one scent per city and started with St. Barthélemy, his hometown. "It's a very hippie-chic place, so I used Jasmine and Patchouli for that one," he says. "In my second fragrance, Marrakech, I used orange blossom. Marrakech is the biggest producer of oranges."

Christophe presented his line at Sniffapalooza, a major perfume industry event, this past April. A Henri Bendel buyer got a whiff of it, and before Christophe knew it, his perfumes were being stocked in their store. "Henri Bendel is very chichi and they only carry about ten fragrance lines. They thought mine was beautiful enough in presentation and in smell to carry at their store."

Enter to win one of two Jouany Perfumes by answering in the comments below: Which fragrance would you most want to try--"Marrakech" or "St. Barthélemy?"

Thank you for entering. This contest is now closed.

Two FOFs will win.

30November   {Beauty Testing} 12 Benefits Hair Products

Paulmaier, the manufacturer of 12 Benefits hair products, promises that their Rapid Blowout Spray and Instant Healthy Hair Treatment ($24.95 each at Soft Surroundings) will “dramatically reverse the aged and damaged look and feel” of your hair by restoring the natural lipids that you lose when you shampoo and style. The Rapid Blowout Spray is formulated with Argan oil and “reduces blow-dry time, volumizes fine locks, adds shine and helps reduce damage from heat styling tools,” according to their marketing materials. The Instant Healthy Hair Treatment, which should be sprayed on to hair “from mid-shaft to ends,” “seals your color, smooths frizz and strengthens fragile hair.” Can this hair care duo truly do away with bad hair days? FOF product testers untangle the truth . . .

—————————————————————————————————–—-

Image

For how long did you use these products?
I am still using the products [after several months]-- they are a very generous size.

{click here to read all the reviews!}

Did you notice a difference in your hair?
I have a dry scalp and frizzy hair, especially when it is humid. Using heat styling tools has only multiplied my frizz. I noticed a difference after about three weeks. My hair is glossier, silkier and smoother. It swings a bit more. My sister asked me what I had been using because she noticed the difference in luster.

Would you recommend these hair products to a friend?
Wholeheartedly. The oil in the second product is so light, it never weighed my hair down.

—————————————————————————————————–—-

Image

How long did you use the product?
Approximately 8 weeks.

Did you notice a difference in your hair?
Definitely! [It made my hair] soft and extremely shiny--a much more controlled look!

Was your hair dry or damaged before you started using the product?
Yes, very!

Did you see an improvement in the look and feel of your hair?
Yes. I was complimented by my hairdresser -- she said my hair was in great condition.

Do you think the blow dry spray and healthy hair treatment are a good value?
They are much less costly than products I have tried that didn’t work as well. I would easily spend that amount on these products.

Would you use these products again?
In a heartbeat!

Would you recommend these hair products to a friend?
I have recommended them to a few of my friends who noticed a difference in my hair.

—————————————————————————————————–—-

Image

For how long did you use the hair products?
Three times a week for four weeks.

Did you notice a difference in your hair?
Yes.

How did the products make your hair look?
Slightly volumized.

Were the directions easy to follow?
Yes.

Do you think the blow dry spray and healthy hair treatment are worth the value?
Not on my retiree budget.

Would you use these products again?
Probably not, although I would recommend them to others.

—————————————————————————————————–—-

Image

For how long did you use these products?
I took these wonderful products to France for a 3-week vacation.

Did you notice a difference in your hair?
After the sun, wind and dry air, [my hair] needed help. This is a terrific product and I will be more than happy to use it from now on.

Would you use these products again? Would you recommend these hair products to a friend?
Not only did I enjoy these products, but I loaned them to friends traveling with us on the Vantage riverboat. All of their reviews were totally positive too.

23November   {Style Expert} Black Friday–Everyday!
A discount doyenne shares her treasure map.

While you’re clawing your way through the crowds this Friday, FOF Diana Tenes, author of 90% off Every Day, will be cozy at home in her living room, sipping peppermint tea and browsing online.
The discount-shopping expert saves thousands each year, but she opts out of frenzied “sale days” like black Friday.
“I appreciate the value you can get on that day,” she explains. “But I think it’s a lot of work--I don’t like to fight with people.”

Here she reveals, step-by-step, how she gets fab fashion deals without stepping into the fray. (Plus, check out the slideshow at the bottom of this post for great deals we found using her methods.)

1. Start with a specific item in mind. “I work as a stylist, so I’m usually looking for a very specific piece--lace boots or a leopard-pint sweater, for example. That’s much more effective than browsing sales for whatever catches your eye. Go to a store you like--Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Macy’s--and try stuff on. Make a list of the specific items you love. This is your seasonal shopping list--keep it in your bag.”

2. If you don’t have an item, start with a brand. “I love the look and style of Anthropologie, Betsey Johnson and Free People. I always carry a list of those brands so whether I’m on ebay or at a garage sale, I’m looking for certain labels.”

3. Speaking of eBay . . . start there. “I do a lot of my shopping online, and eBay is still my favorite resource. Once you know exactly what you want, type in every search variation you can think of. For example, if you love a leopard-print cardigan from Diane von Furstenberg, type that in. But don’t forget that not every seller is savvy. You can get the best deals by searching more anonymous terms such as 'leopard sweater,' or 'animal-print cardigan.' Also consider, 'vintage leopard-print cardigan.' This part takes time, but I love it.”

4. Set low limits. "I try to set a spending limit of $30-$40 for any one item on eBay. That may seem low, but it forces you to look harder and save more. I’ve found boots for $15 that cost $450 in a trendy boutique. I found a Lucky Brand sweater on eBay for $40 and it cost $150 in the store. Challenge yourself to save big."

5. Bookmark these sites! "For well-priced alternatives that aren’t vintage or secondhand, I like to check Overstock.com, shopstyle.com, thefind.com, nextag.com, polyvore.com, etsy.com. Just like on eBay, use different descriptions or combination of words to search on these sites, such as “animal print, cheetah, leopard, faux fur spotted or jacket, coat or outerwear.”

6. Make second-hand your first love. "I always shop Goodwill, where I find the very best deals. Find the one closest to your home and visit shopgoodwill.com. Search craigslist for local flea markets and garage sales--another goldmine for truly cheap finds.

7. Shop vintage coats. "Certain big-ticket items--coats and bags, for example--are just better when you buy vintage. I type 'vintage coats' into eBay constantly--you never know what gems you’ll find."

8. Sign up for Fashion Vault from eBay. There are a lot of discount shopping emails, but this is my favorite. It’s created by eBay and it’s all designer brands at 60-70 percent off. I mean, this stuff is really cheap.

23November   {Movies} Lessons learned about FOF men from the new movie, About Fifty.
In the upcoming comedy, "About Fifty," Adam (played by Martin Grey Gottlieb) turns fifty and finds himself with a broken marriage and a dead-end career. To cheer him up, his best FOFriend, Jon, suggests they take a weekend trip to Palm Springs to re-live their younger days. At a steakhouse the first evening of their trip, Jon and Adam meet two FOFs. Despite setting out to meet younger ladies, they end up having a great time. When Jon and Adam cut the night short, Peggy, one of the FOFs, becomes furious. “They just stopped in for the steak; now they’re going to go out and see if they can get some real meat,” she says. “You don’t think I know what’s what? Believe me, your day is coming...”

Peggy is right, Jon and Adam’s day is more than just “coming”... it has arrived. Both men experience midlife crises on the trip. What ensues is a hilarious “coming of age story about coming of age,” and also an interesting look into the feelings and fears FOF men. Here are the top lessons we learned about FOF men from "About Fifty." Take notes and then, go see this laugh-out-loud movie for yourself!

—————————————————————————————————–

About50_slide1a

Topping Jon and Adam’s list of worries about getting older: colonscopies, bad backs and prostate cancer. They panic when their golf swings slow down. (Adam is horrified when the golf pro suggests he try the “senior shaft” golf club). They also worry about the new guys in their office out-performing them. (“Thanks for the swoosh!” says Jon’s 20-something-year-old co-worker Dan when he wins the Nike account, Jon’s former client.)

About50_slide2

Almost every other scene Adam gets a call from his forgetful father. “Did you check in the freezer?” Adam asks his dad who loses his television remote control. “The TV’s not broken. You probably just hit the wrong button on the remote like last time,” he says to his dad in another scene. Sound familiar?

About50_slide3

Instead of a tub of ice cream and a shoulder to cry on after a breakup or bad day, FOF men console each other with steak dinners and tough love. When Jon suggests to Adam they go on a golf outing for the weekend to cheer him up, Adam rejects the idea and continues to wallow in his sadness. “Want to hang yourself in the closet? Go ahead...” says Jon. “All you ever tell me is how miserable you are...this is an opportunity--you, me, a holiday weekend doing it the way we did it in the old days.” Adam grudgingly obliges and Jon lavishes him with a steak dinner, rounds of golf and even tries to set him up with an ex-fling’s best friend. When Jon finds out he has prostate cancer, Adam brings him his medicine and stocks his refrigerator but jokes, “I don’t give a sh*t about you. I stocked your fridge because I’m coming back in the morning for food.”

About50_slide4

We don’t want to give too much away, but after landing a date with two FUFs, Jon likens it to “a gift from God” and Adam puts it best, when he says it’s more like “an episode of ‘To Catch a Predator.’”

About50_slide5

FOF men don’t always have their dream careers figured out at 50, either. Towards the end of the movie, Adam, a struggling writer, comes to the conclusion that maybe he was never really meant to be a writer. “A key to life isn’t figuring out who you are, it’s figuring out who you aren’t,” he tells Jon.

"About Fifty" is now playing in Palm Springs, Calif. and will be playing in select theaters in South Florida in December. It will be released on DVD and VOD on February 14, 2012.

22November   {Giveaway} Win a custom, embroidered locket

Jennifer Shingelo is giving away a locket embroidered with a letter of your choice from her Etsy shop, Stella Saves the Day. Enter to win by answering in the comments below: Whose picture would you keep in a locket?

Lockets, all the rage during the Victorian era, haven't quite fallen out of style, but they've fallen out of style. Let us explain. A recent search for "locket" on Google, turned up a most uninspiring collection of trinkets. That is, until we found Jennifer Shingelo's Etsy shop, Stella Saves the Day. After we stopped oohing and ahhing of the hand-stitched designs, we wondered just who is Stella? And how does Jennifer craft these gorgeous, one-of-a-kind pieces?

Her collection is named after her great grandmother, Stella. Jenn was inspired to create lockets after years of adoring her grandmother's jewelry box. "I opened my Etsy shop in 2009 and sold my first piece in 2011," says Jenn, a trained sculptor. "In sculpting, you also make items that hold memory. I did that for a ten years but wanted to do something where I'd be interacting with people more. This business has been very touching and personal." Jenn says her customers often share their personal stories. "A man just sent me pictures of his baby twin sons," she says. "He wants them represented by two embroidered acorns in a locket for his wife."

An advisor at the Pratt Institute of Design by day, Jennifer crafts the jewelry in her Brooklyn kitchen at night. ("Some day I'll have a studio," she says.) Her lockets are sourced from a small, father-daughter owned company in New England ("I actually have to pick up the phone and call them to place orders!" she says.) Jenn hand-embroiders inserts for the lockets using patterns she finds in antique Victorian books about locket making. "For me, it's all about the history," she explains.

22November   {FOF Guru Book Review} Hotel Vendôme–will this book Steel your heart?

Every book that FOF Danielle Steel has ever written has been a New York Times bestseller, including her latest novel, Hotel Vendôme (Random House Publishing Group, November 2011). It follows an ambitious man as he transforms a shabby Manhattan inn into a luxurious, five-star hotel. His seemingly perfect life comes to a halt when his wife, Miriam, takes off with a rock star, leaving him to raise their 4-year-old daughter, Heloise. Is this Eloise for grown ups? Not quite... But, Kirkus Reviews says the novel will “appeal to the most dedicated of Steel's fans,” although many readers say it falls flat. “It seems Steel has run out of story lines,” says one Amazon.com reviewer. “44 Charleston Street, about a single woman who opens her home to boarders, was disappointing as well. Now we have a hotel. What's next, an apartment complex?”

Does FOF Book Guru Barbara Phelps agree? Did Hotel Vendôme make her want to check in or out?

Did you enjoy this book?
Three quarters of it. The description made me feel like I was owning and running a grand hotel. I could feel the passion of the owner and I was gripped by the things that he and his daughter experienced. However, the plot became a runaway carriage ride--rampant changes of scene, many emotions running high...I wanted to slow it down!

Was it a page-turner or did you have to push through it?
It was a page turner and really had me wound up in their lives and emotions.

What would you want to ask the author, now that you’re done reading?
I would ask Ms. Steel why she felt the need to try to cram so much into the last quarter of the book.

Would you recommend this to other FOFs?
I would recommend it to other FOFs--to both those who love Danielle Steel and those new to her. It was a bit different from her average plot lines.

If you had to classify this book would you call it a “must read” a “pass” or a “skim it” book?
A must-read. I did find it flying by as I read it and was excited to get back to it each day.

21November   {Product Testing} Peptide Wrinkle Concealer Duo Wand by Clientele

Clientele, claims that its Peptide Wrinkle Concealer Duo Wand (retail value: $30) will “lubricate away crow's feet,” “protect the delicate tissue around your eyes,” “fight the appearance of wrinkles,” and, if that’s not enough, “It's a wonderful base to hold eyeshadow fresh all day.” Each stick comes in two shades, neutral and tan, and contains a “special peptide” promising to “erase your age” without overdrying skin. But what did our FOF testers think?

—————————————————————————————————–

Image

Were the directions given to you clear and understandable?
The directions were clear and understandable but not complete. The product was thick and sticky and I felt like I had to pull my skin too much to apply it.

How quickly did you see results?
After about 3 days of use, I stopped using it on my eyelids and instead, just used it over my outer eye creases. The cream filled in the creases immediately.

{click here to read all the reviews!}

Did the product meet or exceed your expectations?
I used the product for 3 weeks. I don't believe it actually improved my skin, it just temporarily filled in the wrinkles.

Would you use this product again?
No.

What could make this product better?
I'm not sure. It was just a temporary cover-up and I would like to see something that would help to soften lines and wrinkles more permanently.

—————————————————————————————————–

Image

Were the directions given to you clear and understandable?
The directions were understandable, and the concealer was very easy to use.

How quickly did you see results?
I used the concealer now for two weeks and noticed great coverage immediately.

Did the product meet or exceed your expectations?
This product exceeded my expectations. I love using it on my eyelids [as a primer] and it makes the eyeshadow I apply in the morning last until evening.

Would you use this product again?
I would definitely use this product again.

What could make this product better?
I have no improvements. It works just as it is.

What was your overall experience with this product?
Positive. My crow’s feet are diminishing and unlike other concealers I’ve tried, it does not give me a white-eye effect. I do not feel it is greasy or too heavy. I am very pleased with the results and will definitely purchase and continue to use it in the future.

—————————————————————————————————–

Image

Were the directions given to you clear and understandable?
Yes.

How quickly did you see results?
Immediately.

Did the product meet or exceed your expectations?
In some ways, yes, others, no. It was a little greasy and hard to blend in, almost the consistency of sunscreen. At first I thought even the neutral shade went on too light but after it settled in (and I blotted the greasiness), I noticed that it gave very good coverage to my seriously dark circles.

Would you use this product again?
Possibly, if they made some changes to the ingredients.

What could make this product better?
Perhaps they could use an emollient other than petroleum so it would be less greasy.

Please describe your experience with this product.
Besides that it was greasy and hard to rub in, I was pleased with the results and excited that I might have found an even better concealer than the expensive one I currently use. But, unfortunately, after a few days, I began to develop psoriasis on my eyelids (an off-and-on problem, that I haven't experienced in many years). It seems that putting petroleum products on my eyelids has caused psoriasis flare-ups. I didn't check the ingredients prior to using the Clientele product, but after the flare-up, I checked and, sure enough, discovered that it was petroleum based. Once I stopped using it, the psoriasis quickly disappeared. If this company would switch their formula to an organic emollient base, such as beeswax or plant oils, I think this product would be a winner! But in the meantime, I will stay away from it because of the reaction my skin had.

—————————————————————————————————–

Image

Were the directions given to you clear and understandable?
I was initially confused by the instructions. “Apply under the eye. When absorbed, used the handy sponge applicator or wand to gently pat concealer under eyes.” This lead me to believe there were two products; the one that I apply under the eye and the concealer to pat on after the first was absorbed. Once I asked and got that straightened out, I was okay.

How quickly did you see results?
I never did see it “lubricate away crow’s feet.” However, it did give me a nice unblemished base under my eye to work from.

Did the product meet or exceed your expectations?
The product was not what I expected. It was too thick and sticky for my skin type. However, I didn’t expect it to absorb into my skin as much as it did, so it ended up okay. It was also very white, and made me look a bit scary until I applied some foundation.

Would you use this product again?
I would not go out and purchase this, but I will most likely finish using what I have.

What could make this product better?
A lighter texture and consistency.

Please describe your experience with this product.
This product reminded me of the ‘pancake makeup’ that actors wear. I felt like I was preparing for the stage rather than my daily life. I am sure the product is wonderful for the right skin type, but the area under my eyes is thin-skinned, and this was simply too dense. The consistency made it hard to get just the right amount on my eyes and I needed to spend a lot of time blending it.
—————————————————————————————————–

Image

Were the directions clear and understandable?
Yes.

How quickly did I see results?
I did not notice any results.

Did the product meet or exceed my expectations?
It neither met or exceeded my expectations.

Would I use it again?
No, I would not.

What could make it better?
If it was creamier so that it went on more smoothly. Also, I wish it did not get lighter in color as the day went on.

What was your overall experience with this product?
I found this product hard to use. It was quite firm and was hard to apply. When I tried to dab it on my skin with the applicator, I felt like it was pulling. I tried patting it on with my finger and this worked slightly better, but I found that it was going on much too thick.

Also, it kept getting lighter in color as the day went on. A couple of hours after I applied it, I looked like I had pale circles under my eyes. As an eyeshadow base, it was okay.

—————————————————————————————————–

Image

Were the directions given to you clear and understandable?
I felt the directions supplied were very confusing. They contained directions for two different products--wrinkle treatment and firming eye cream. After reading it several times, I wasn’t quite sure how to use it, or what to expect. The fact that the cream had two compartments with what seems to be the same product was also confusing.

How quickly did you see results?
I do not feel that there were any lasting effects with this product.

Did the product meet or exceed your expectations?
No.

Would you use this product again?
Probably not.

What could make this product better?
Better directions and a more spreadable consistency. I was not able to easily blend it into my skin.

Please describe your experience with this product.
The product did not blend very well on my skin. Once I was able to blend it using a combination of my finger and the sponge provided, it did provide some coverage of fine lines and brightening under my eye. However, I can’t say there has been any permanent reduction in fine lines and crow’s feet.

—————————————————————————————————–

Image

Were the directions given to you clear and understandable?
No. Visually, I couldn't tell the difference between the two compartments and there was no labeling on the box. Of course, I eventually figured it out, but for $30, I'd hope for more clear instructions.

How quickly did you see results?
I really didn't see a difference at all.

Did the product meet or exceed your expectations?
I had hoped this 2-in-1 product would be better than others I have used, but it wasn't.

Would you use this product again?
I don't think I would purchase this product and prefer what I was already using.

What could make this product better?
This product would be a lot more user-friendly if the compartments were labeled!

Please describe your experience with this product.
I really did want to love this...

17November   {Book Review} Test Dorie’s Cooking App!

"Are apps making cookbooks obsolete?" Such was the headline in a popular New York Times article last week, which went on to praise Baking with Dorie a critically-acclaimed new baking app from FOF Dorie Greenspan, one of our FOFeatured Women. We went straight to the source, Dorie herself, to get the scoop on what makes apps so well-suited for the kitchen and whether or not cookbooks will go the way of the dodo.

Plus, 3 FOFs will get to try Dorie's app. Enter, by leaving a comment at the bottom of this post.

Who knew that one of the most buzzed about cooking apps would come from an FOF chef and not a 20-something!
I'm excited about new technology. I've had an iPad from day one and thought it was a miracle. I have 84,000 followers on Twitter. I feel like a baking evangelist. I want everyone in their kitchens baking. Apps and social media are tools to help me reach new bakers. You thought a new app would come from someone in their 20s, but it was my hope that by doing the app, I'd reach people in their 20s.

Do you think cookbooks are dead?
No. The best apps supplement cookbooks--they give you something that a cookbook can't. I'm not giving up cookbooks; in fact, I'm working on a new one now. But, I'm thrilled we have this technology and excited about what it can do and how it's going to evolve.

What does your app give someone that a cookbook can't?
You can get my recipes in the book. The app is me with you in your kitchen. When I write recipes for a book, I try to include many visual clues so they know what they are doing is right--for instance, what color a finished cake will be and the way it should spring back when you press the top. An app brings this alive. My app has a ton of video, which gives me a way really show home bakers the techniques.

So what specific techniques are best learned from the app?
There's a way that I knead dough that I can describe in a book, but when you see it, it's completely different.

One feature that foodies have been buzzing about is the unique ways a user can view recipes in your app. Tell me about that.
CulinApp, the company that created the app, presented each recipe in four different ways because they understand that people learn in different ways. There's "cookbook view," where the recipe looks like a traditional cookbook. There's "spin view," where you can spin a carousel to choose pieces of the recipes you want to see. There's "step-by-step" which is the videos in order with the steps beneath it in text. Then there's "CulinView" which is a flow chart of the whole recipe so you get an overview of everything that needs to be done.

What's your favorite view?
My preference is step-by-step.

So cookbooks will still have a place in our kitchen a few years from now?
Yes, for sure. Although, the other day, I saw a picture of kitchen cabinets that are built to hold iPads. I think it's the wave of the future.

3 FOFs will test Dorie's app. Enter to win, by leaving a comment at the bottom of this post.

By entering this contest you are agreeing to read and submit a written review of this app to FabOverFifty and to send a photo of yourself to accompany the published story.
