In 1997, FOF Nancy Morgan and her husband, Larry, were teaching English and traveling in Asia, all while raising their six-year-old daughter Chelsea. The trio would sleep on beds without sheets or even the ground as they trekked. One night, they thought to stitch together two sheets, creating a sort of sack to sleep in. Their first product, the “Dreamsack” was born. They built an entire brand around the beloved “Dreamsack” and over the years have expanded to sheets, pajamas, wraps and more. Here, we chat with Nancy about her line of super-soft, easy-wearing, clothing and linens.
Where is your business based?
Ashland, Oregon. But we go to China, where our manufacturers are, at least twice a year. We believe in not only fair trade, but exceptional trade. We work with smaller co-op factories--we've visited them all and know the people there.
You started with the "Dreamsack"--how did you transition to clothing?
Our customers loved it and asked 'What else do you make like this?' They requested pajamas and bathrobes, so in 1999 we started to expand the line.
What does "Yala" mean?
We wanted a name that has a global feel. We found that the word can be found on almost every continent--its a river in Africa, a region in Thailand, and in Hebrew and Arabic it means 'Let's go.'
What materials do you use?
We started with silk and added bamboo fabric. The bamboo fabric feels really cool against your skin.
We are also adding organic cotton to our line.
Who is the designer?
In the beginning, I was the designer, but in the last couple of years my daughter has joined the business and really likes the designing part.
Working with a family business--best thing ever or biggest challenge ever?
It's wonderful, and it's a challenge. Ashland is a really small town, so my daughter moved to Portland. It works well, because she can be in the community she chooses and we are still in close contact electronically.
Why will FOFs love your line?
As women over fifty, we want to be comfortable and to feel good too. We also like caring about our environment.

only if I have a nice tan
It looks so comfortable.
SURE I DO
My upper arms haven’t seen the light of day in quite a while.
The Sophie wrap is great for those of us who wish to to look fashionable, warm, and cover the part of our arms which are not like they were in our 20s.
yes, i do wear in the warmers weather in the northest clothes that show my upper arms, i do my best to keep in shape but most importantly i feel good about who i am and it did take awhile for me to get there, leaning on very good friends it is amazing to me that when we get together and open up with each other you realize how great it is “just to be you” i have my friends to thank for that, open arms and all…
This wrap is beautiful! I never show my upper arms because I’m too self-conscious of my batwing arms that I inherited from my Mom and Grandmother. I would just love to own one of these beautiful wraps; it’s hard to find anything like this in stores!
Hi nancy!!
Wow, so good to see your picture here!! I LOVE your Yala things (two sets of bamboo sheets, duvet cover, blouses, Jammie’s!).
I wear ‘longer’ short sleeves! So, I love these drapery “wraps”!
I am so happy for you, Chelsea and Larry on your success with Yala!
Beverly (Tessa’s mom)
Of course, I do! I wear whatever I feel comfortable wearing.
Not usually~ unless I am a bit tannes but working on the toning part
i usually keep those puppies covered!
I wear sleeveless tops rarely.
a very nice free place““ richmatchmaking.c~o~m –is a place where you can meet wealthy, successful men and sexy women. It’s worthy a try. You do not have to be rich or famous. It’s free and always will be.,,now,!!It’s your turn to join in!sdfghgfhjhkj……..
YES! I am starting to on occasion (not to work though) as I was one of the winners of the BMR trial – I naturally chose the upper arm model and I can now see a bit of muscle definition (a bit to go though). Even my family notice it!
HOWEVER, we are coming into winter in tropical QLD (Australia) so I DO need a wrap for those chilly nites that get down to about 24° Celcius (80° farenheit or there abouts???).
Of course, I would need to win the brown one – SO my colour…
Yes, because I live in Southeast Texas and it gets hot!
I sometimes wear clothing that shows my upper arm as long as it’s not too short or sleeveless.
Yes, when appropiate. I work hard to stay in shape and don’t mind showing them off when the occaison, a special event or hot day, calls for it. My arms are in good shape; even if they weren’t, I would not hide them for vanity’s sake. It gets too hot in the summer, here. I love the wrap; looks stylish and comfortable. It would be a great addition to many of the outfits I wear, whether it is a sleeveless dress or tank and dress pants, and definitely projects the look I go for: refined and comfortable.
I certainly go sleeveless if the weather’s warm enough. Thanks for highlighting this great product & fascinating-sounding company.
**Sorry could not delete previous entry. Please read this one.***Absolutely! I wear dresses, many of them sleeveless, that flatter my figure all the time, especially in the summer or evenings out. I learned a long time ago it is how you carry yourself- more than the features you carry- that people notice. I feel more comfortable, hence more confident, wearing sleeveless outfits. I can see why this wrap is a bestseller, looks elegant and comfortable. I could see myself wearing this top often…from the office or afterwards, spring to fall. It would definitely be a year round favorite!
Absolutely! I wear dresses, many of them sleeveless, that flatter my figure all the time, especially in the summer or evenings out. I will slip on a blazer in the office, out of professional decorum. I don’t have the perfect figure or arms, but I learned a long time ago, it is how you carry yourself- more than the features you carry- that people notice. As we get older, we know life is short and there is no reward for nitpicking your body, beating yourself up, or waiting until everything is perfect to do something. Most of us look back at our younger days and say, “What was I thinking, I looked good.” I choose to appreciate my body, b/c I am not getting anyone else’s or getting younger, and accept myself as I am, cherubic arms and all. Btw, I haven’t heard one complaint yet.
. I can see why this wrap is a bestseller, gorgeous and looks comfortable, just like how I like to feel. I could see myself wearing this many times…from the office or afterwards, spring to fall.
no, my arms are like wings. i am too embarrassed to show them
Gave up even looking at my upper arms in the mirror two years ago! The wrap looks like sexy camoflage!
I will wear sleeveless occasionally, depends on how great the dress or top is.
It depends on the condition of my arms–toned, bug bites, scarred or whatever is going on. This wrap is so cool and the colors are lucious and flattering.
I have sometimes, but on my sisters farm. I am a larger woman and I would love to pair this wrap with a silk tank.
