25October   {Timeless Style} A Halloween from simpler times
*Sigh* How things have changed...FOF Nancy Poradish recalls a Halloween from simpler times. She submitted this early-1960s photo of her and her sisters after a night of trick-or-treating in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. From left to right, her oldest sister Carla (age 10 or 11) as a night club singer. Nancy (age 3 or 4) as a drum majorette and Paula (age 9 or 10) as a Native American.

"My parents used to take us to our grandparents house after trick-or-treating to show off our costumes. We would have said Paula was dressed as an 'Indian' at the time, but that would not be a correct term to use today. I love the bags from the local dairy and can't believe we were given apples and actually ate them!" -FOF Nancy Poradish

Do you remember what your first Halloween costume was?

I remember when parents didn’t go out trick or treating with little ones – trick or treat was for school-age children. If you didn’t go to school, you didn’t go trick or treating. We went out in groups with older siblings and literally ran between houses trying to go as far as we could before the street lights came on. There was always an adult sitting on a porch keeping an eye out, and our Moms made us eat dinner first so we didn’t make ourselves sick. BYes, simpler times.

My mother told me I was “Donald Duck” my first Halloween. I waddled up to the door an a snowy eve, and quacked “trick or treat”…..The door opened, but I was on the wrong side of it, and got knocked off the porch stoop into a pile of deep snow! ;-) )

I grew up in Chicago and many of our neighbors gave out home made goodies. Ethnic bakery goods and homemade extra gooey caramel apples were some of the most coveted ones! One person gave out nickels..it was the 50′s and that was a lot of money to a kid!
    Simple times!
