I had just met this wonderfully shy, quiet man and we had gone out a couple of times. He sent me a beautiful bouquet of tulips with a note saying that all he could think of were my lips. Needless to say, that was the beginning of a long and so far very happy marriage.
I feel like such a jerk right now...I don't think anyone's done anything that would fall into my 'romantic' column at all. Not unless you count asking for that 'romantic' something.
Howeever, that doesn't mean I don't fantasize about a romantic something...Dinner cooked for me, wine poured for me, my feet rubbed and a full-body massage...an evening of ultimate spoiling for me. I guess I just haven't had that kind of partner in my life.... but perhaps with the help of Pamela Madsen's romantic evening picnic basket, perhaps I could start a new trend!!!
I told my husband I wanted a chocolate diamond for Christmas. Well,
he went to the jewelry store on his own, picked it out (we usually pick out my jewelry together) bought something way more expensive than I would ever do and I just love it !! I wear it every day as like an anniversary band especially since we will be celebrating out 23 rd on Easter !!
When my husband and i first met and began dating, whenever we were out and it was raining, or whenever we came across a really badly broken sidewalk, walkway he would scoop me up in his arms and carry's me over it so I wouldn't wet/ruin my shoes... he still does this to this day.... (20 years together)....:-)
Shortly after I returned home from the hospital, after undergoing a procedure that left me incredibly depressed and directionless, my husband earmarked a page in the Omega Institute catalog, circling in red, a description of a weeklong empowerment course, called Bootcamp for Goddesses-- While he cared for our six-year-old daughter, I chanted, drummed, danced, sweated (literally-- in a sweat lodge!), pretzeled into ungodly yoga positions and muscled my way into shape to return home a warrior in the form of the Shinto Sun goddess, the goddess card I had dubiously selected on my first day. It was as if he had handed me the sun....and the moon and stars.
My husband gave me a beautiful 60th surprise birthday party last October. All my friends and family were there and it made turning the big 6-0 a much easier to swallow. He did such a great job keeping it a secret because it is very, very difficult to keep anything from me!
Sad to say, I can't think of one romantic thing done for ME. I was always the doer rather than the receiver. I'm intentionally using the past tense because at the age of 58, almost 59, I haven't had a date or intimacy in close to 15 or so years, and it's not for lack of trying. I'm not unattractive yet somehow men don't seem to be drawn to me. Maybe Ms. Madsen can help? In the meantime, I just keep loving ME from the inside out.
There are many, many romantic memories. I am lucky to have known such thoughtful men.
One of my top faves: a former boyfriend and I went to dinner at a favorite restaurant. At the bar was a tiny table, table cloth and 2 chairs made from the remnants of a wine bottle (one of the tiny chairs even has the seat back in the shape of a heart!). I asked the bartender how I could get a set and he explained that I couldn't - it was made just for that restaurant. During our meal this boyfriend told me he intended to marry me. Weeks later this man presented me with an exact duplicate of the tiny table set we saw in the restaurant. He contacted the maker, pleaded his case and said the tiny set was to serve as an a reminder of a night he never wanted me to forget. 15 years later that tiny set is still on my mantel. This man I will never forget.
My husband arranged rocks on the expanse of land next door to say I Love You. I noticed the new rock formation, but couldn't read the words, and kept studying the rocks and suggesting that aliens were trying to contact us. He let me advance theories of alien contact for days before outlining his message for me. It was just a matter of perspective, but I knew we'd be together forever.
After dating about a year, husband took me to a Collin Raye concert and on the way home stopped at the church he was pastoring at the time. He said he forgot something and it was too cold for me to sit in the car so I had to come in. He led me into the sanctuary and proposed to me at the altar. Then he gave me his high school class ring-he had never given it to anyone in high school-- and said we would go pick out an engagement ring together. We did go pick out a ring, along with our 5 children -- we were to become a blended family.
While my girlfriend took me out for the day, my husband had borrowed a cookbook from her and prepared from scratch a full course gourmet dinner complete with appetizer and cheese cake. When I arrived home later that evening he had it all ready and waiting with lit candles and champagne.
Driving along with my now husband, heard one of my favorite songs on the radio. He pulled over into a shopping parking lot, turned the radio up, opened the car doors and danced with me..it was magical. Later thought about what people must have been thinking who saw us.....lol

My husband called in all the favors he was owed at work to get us a private four course dinner in the cooking school dining room where he worked. The room was lit by candles there was a glass of wine waiting at the table and one of the instructors was behind a curtain playing guitar for the entire dinner.
