I had a hysterectomy around 40 because of endometriosis. I was given a hormone patch, but 2 years ago my Ob/gyn decided I should stop using them. I'm now 49, and have breast cancer in my family. I can't live with the symptoms, soy, & black cohosh is not working. Any advice?

I just had testing done from BodyLogicMD for bioidentical hormones. Check with your doctor to see if you're a candidate for using these, or you can contact BodyLogicMD and ask them if it's an appropriate treatment with your history.
Speak to your Ob/Gyn, but I doubt he/she would recommend ANY type of hormones with your family history of breast cancer. Most women develop estrogen-dependent breast cancer, and adding hormones is normally not a good idea. When someone has a diagnosis of breast cancer, often they put you on drugs that eliminate estrogen completely from your body.
If you are having hot flashes, craving sugars, mood swings, trouble sleeping, etc, oone of the simplest things you can do is to switch to a reduced carbohydrate, adequate lean protein diet. One of the reasons the symptoms of menopause get worse is because when you eat large servings of carbohydrates, even whole grain ones like whole wheat pasta, brown rice, bread, potatoes, your body must release insulin. The same is true for sodas, fruit, sweetened desserts, cookies, cake, etc.
While we are not sure how it does this exactly, we know insulin interplays with estrogen. This is why the average post-menopausal woman gain about 30 pounds. When women begin eating the diet I prescribe for them based on lab results, they not only lose weight, but their symptoms drastically reduce. I now see women who used to have 10 hot flashes per day, but now they only rarely have one.
Try Effexor XR 37.5mg (generic is Venlafaxine). It is technically an antidepressant but at this low dose, it is VERY effective for hot flashes with no risk of hormone related complications. I am a pharmacist who has been using this for several years with great results. For me it reduced my symptoms by 90%
