I had a bone density test this week which showed osteoporosis - my Dr has suggested a number of options - but I's like to explore natural options before taking the bisphosphenates advertised. I'm asking for any thoughts/recommendations on this controversial issue.
This question has been retired and is no longer accepting answers.

There are a number of great natural solutions for osteoporosis. I am a functional nutritionist and health coach (with a master's in physical therapy), so I have seen a lot of patients and clients with osteoporosis, and researched all of the latest strategies last year with my mom who had a fracture.
My first recommendation is to transition to a whole foods, alkaline diet. I would also have your vitamin D and other hormone levels checked. You can do a full spectrum saliva and blood test through canaryclub.org. Then, I would have a qualified functional nutritionist assess your magnesium intake. Calcium intake is essential, but needs to be assisted by vitamin D and magnesium (among other things.)
Finally there are great exercises for body protection. Extension exercises for the spine, and other weight bearing exercises for the wrists, arms and hips.
If you would like to chat with me about your specific situation, I would be happy to schedule a free strategy session with you. Just contact my assistant at http://jessicadrummond.com/contact/, and put Osteoporosis Strategy Session in the subject. Then, we can schedule a time to meet and discuss all of your natural options.
All the Best,

I am a member of a Femur Facture Support group of over 135 women and men who have suffered atypical femur fractures after taking Fosamax. There is a great deal of controversy about these drugs and the unusual side effects of femur fractures and jaw bone necrosis. Our group has testified before the FDA twice. Our fractures occurred in non-traumatic ways such as turning or stumbling, often having the femur snap before we fell. It is a horrific and life-changing injury requiring titanium rodding and a lengthy rehab. Please do extensive research before you agree to the bisphospenates. Many docs are unaware of the problems. Many in our group have had both femurs rodded, some done prophylactically when a stress fracture showed up after a full fracture in one leg. Do your research and be ready to advocate for yourself by being informed. Best wishes!
I had the same scan and the same results. I refused to take all the bisphosphenates because, after investigating them, I discovered far too many side effects. I don't like new drugs that are virtually unproven either! My GP suggested I try D3 rather than the Citracal I was using and my blood tests now are consistently excellent when before I was calcium deficient. My husband had the same problem and now his blood tests are coming back great. btw, ladies: Older men are as prone to calcium deficiencies as we are! If you investigate D3, you find it not only improves bone health but it helps protect against colorectal cancer too. On a personal note, I never take a prescription drug, particularly a new one, if I can find a viable option in an over the counter supplement. It's why I take Red Yeast Rice rather than statins and I now have superb cholesterol and triglyceride counts. My GP recommended RYR too, as she agrees with me about prescription drugs. I have a full blood panel done every six months and my health has dramatically improved with supplements rather than enriching Big Pharma!
