As a native Georgian now living in Florida, I can tell you research there can be so frustrating and at the same time quite rewarding. So much of the south burned and that means courthouses and records. One easy and free site is: http://www.usgwarchives.org/ga/jones.htm
I not only love to do family research, I make my living at it! I'm an archivist and historian in private practice. Tell me about the site you are seeking and something about your research goals.
You should check the Association of Professional Genealogists website for a specialist that works in Georgia records. That site is http://www.apgen.org.
Were you looking at the Georgia Virtual Vault? It has a lot of digital records. http://cdm.sos.state.ga.us/
If you let us know exactly what records you're looking for, someone might be able to help you more specifically.
Another great place to check is Linkpendium -- go to Georgia and then select Jones county and see what's listed! And, check the "catalog" at http://www.familysearch.org (and not just the nice digitized collections), search on Georgia, Jones and see what records have been microfilmed by them -- this gives you a great idea of what records might or might not be extant (e.g. still around for you to use ;) )
Whatever site you go to the best one to use is the genweb project that has done lots of cemeteries, etc. Also the local historical society or genealogical society can be of help. Some places will scan the document and e-mail it to you. State library and archives are also a big help.
Here are some links to get you started. If you need assistance, you can check with APG for local folks. Association of Professional Genealogists http://bit.ly/L0PSlo
I like the Georgia Virtual Vault too. Georgia's Virtual Vault : Home http://bit.ly/N9uJnH They also offer Confederate Pension Applications which may be helpful.
Try the Association of Professional Genealogists http://www.apgen.org for someone to help you. You may search by location. Another option is to Google "Jones County, Georgia genealogy." That will take you to several free sites specific to that county. One of my favorites is USGenWeb which probably has a volunteer assigned to Jones County GA.
Here are a couple -
Georgia's Virtual Vault: http://cdm.sos.state.ga.us/index.php
Digital Library of Georgia: http://dlg.galileo.usg.edu/?Welcome
There are several more free Georgia websites on the Internet Genealogy toolbar I created - it's completely free to download and use, no advertising, spyware or anything, and the websites don't link you back to subscription sites - just the good, free stuff. Download the toolbar - all free - at http://relativelycurious.ourtoolbar.com
I have been doing family research for over 30 years. I just retired to do it full-time. I live in Georgia but not Jones County. All of the suggestions for free sites are great suggestions. I have a blog you also might like to follow at ceirrageorgia.blogspot.com. Good luck with your family research.
I am a professional genealogist who specializes in GA research. I used to live in Statesboro, just outside of Savannah and really enjoyed learning about GA's wonderful history. What genealogical question do you have?
sjulia,
I do enjoy genealogy and ancestry research. I am leaving on a 6 week vacation to multiple countries in a few days. I would like to help when I return in August. I am sorry that you caught me at a bad time, But I WILL be back. kakkie60
