We recently spoke with Cheryl Williams, Director of Marketing at Vianda Life Sciences, to get the scoop on the science behind a menopause relief supplement. Supported by a variety of clinical studies and tests, Avlimil is trusted by over one million women who want to take control of their menopause symptoms. Check out our informative interview:

What is menopause?

Menopause is the cessation of menstruation, which occurs with most women between the ages of 45 and 55. The resulting decline in ovarian function is associated with the reduction in levels of estrogen and progesterone.

What are the menopause symptoms that most trouble women?

tiredThe physical symptoms of menopause include hot flashes, sweating, cardiovascular complaints, fatigue, vertigo, muscle and joint pain, urinary incontinence and vaginal dryness. Menopause can also lead to osteoporosis and accelerate the development of coronary heart disease.

Psychological symptoms of menopause include irritability, forgetfulness, anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, and reduced libido.

Hot flashes are recurrent, transient episodes of flushing, perspiration and a sensation ranging from warmth to intense heat on the upper body and face, sometimes followed by chills. Hot flashes that occur with perspiration during sleep are called night sweats. Most women experience hot flashes for six months to two years, although some women have them for 10 years or longer.

Is hormonal replacement therapy still recommended?

The benefits of hormone replacement are deemed to outweigh the risks, for women under the age of 60, or within 10 years of the beginning of menopause, according to an international consensus of doctors.

Why should a woman choose a natural supplement over prescription drugs?

Women who wish to avoid the possible side effects associated with hormone replacement therapy prefer natural approaches to treating their symptoms of menopause.

How and why do natural ingredients work on the symptoms of menopause?

Botanical preparations used to treat menopausal symptoms can be divided into two groups. The first group, known as phytoestrogens, includes compounds called isoflavones. The isoflavones from soybeans are structurally similar to estrogen and bind to estrogen receptors in the body, yet they have weak estrogenic activity and therefore don’t have the potential risks of estrogen therapies.

Soy isoflavones are modestly effective in relieving menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes. Larger doses of soy isoflavones also may help to support bone health and maintain healthy blood vessels, an essential component of cardiovascular health, according to NAMS (North American Menopause Society).1

The second category of botanical preparations modulates levels of neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, in the brain.  Serotonin receptors play vital roles in the regulation of body temperature, as well as mood and sleep.

blackcohoshBlack cohosh is a Native American plant that has been studied for treatment of menopausal symptoms. Six out of nine studies of black cohosh root extract showed a 26% improvement in menopausal symptoms. Benefits are noticeable within three to four weeks, and maximum benefit can be felt within three months.

Which are the most potent ingredients in Avlimil?

actual bottleAvlimil Natural Balance is a formula focused on providing health to women through normal hormonal changes that occur with menopause. One capsule contains 54 mg of the phytoestrogen, genistein, and 40 mg of a black cohosh root extract.

Two clinical studies, conducted over a year with 54 mg doses of isolated genistein, reported significant reductions in hot flashes.2

The remaining ingredients are sage leaf extract, red raspberry leaf, cayenne pepper, damiana leaf, ginger root, licorice root and valerian root, which have traditionally been used by herbalists to support hormonal changes in women.

With all the natural supplements on the market, how does a woman know which will (really) work for her?

Every woman has her own DNA and body chemistry, but clinical studies account for these variations. If conducted well, these studies will indicate whether or not a drug or dietary supplement will be effective. Some natural remedies are not backed by clinical studies and rely only on testimony from users. Ultimately each of us has to decide which supplements to try.

Given the brand has been used by over 1 million women, why do women choose Avlimil over other brands?

breakfastThe blend of ingredients in Avlimil are thought to address various menopausal symptoms in different ways, i.e. serotonin regulates body temperature, and isoflavones bind to estrogen receptors to regulate bone health and decrease hot flashes. The additional herbal formula supports hormonal changes in women, according to herbalists.
