Our Skin

Over the years, we've scrubbed our skin with loofahs, lightened it with lemon juice and bronzed it with baby oil. (We all know how that turned out.) So what's the real skinny on great skin? FOF spoke to top scientists to get the truth - not the trends.

  • Q: Dear Dr. Peredo,
My husband is taking me to St. Barth’s for our 15th anniversary, and while trying on swimsuits I’ve noticed a distinct loss of elasticity on my thigh area. How can I help smooth and tighten up?
    --Helen
  • Q: Dear Dr. Peredo,
ImageI live in a very warm, dry climate and I’m really concerned about dry, scaly skin on my arms and legs. I moisturize daily but it doesn’t improve noticeably. Can you offer any advice?
    --Serena
    • A: Dear Serena,
What you think is dryness could be dead skin buildup. Try to take cooler showers (very hot water can dry out the skin). Also, assess your shower regimen – an exfoliating body wash could really help your skin. A new product to try is Olay Total Effect Exfoliate and Replenish Body Wash.
  • Q: Dear Dr. Peredo,
I’ll admit – I went to a lot of tanning booths in the past. Now there’s discoloration in my chest area. What causes this and what I might do to combat it?
    --Vanessa
    • A: Dear Vanessa,
The tanning salon is bad. But admitting it is part of the solution! Always use sunblock to avoid cumulative sun damage, and try incorporating over-the-counter products with anti-aging benefits into your daily routine, which can help with discoloration.
  • Q: Dear Dr. Paredo,
ImageI just turned 50, and I’m noticing that my skin looks increasingly dull and lifeless. I take good care of myself, always wear sunscreen, and have begun using anti-aging products. What are some other ways to restore my more youthful glow?
    --Julia
    • A: Dear Julia,
As we’ve covered here, moisturizing and exfoliating are key to younger-looking skin. It’s also important to have a well-balanced diet. Get some form of exercise daily, whether it’s at the gym or on the dance floor. Try eating more salmon, salads, and avocado (all rich in Omega 3 oils), drink lots of fluids, and consider a daily multi-vitamin to keep your body healthy and happy.

Having just turned 52 last week, I really began to notice the loss of elasticity around my elbows, knees and thighs. I appreciate this great information, and would love a chance to try Olay's new anti-aging body wash!

pmannerino on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 09:18.

I never knew this elbow issue related to my turning 50! They have become a real sore spot in my every day life. Hope to get a chance to try this new product. I have been a fan of Olay for years!

Cassi97 on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 09:24.

I am more hesitant than ever to wear a bathing suit, so I would love to try this and see if it helps my sagging elbows and knees. (and other areas, which I won't list because it's depressing :)

joyzkim on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 09:42.

What will they think of next, but I will take all the help I can get!! Luv to try this!

grnwillow on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 09:47.

I have worked outside, and in greenhouses for years, and would love to try something that might help my arms and hands. They take a beating all the time. Thanks for the chance.

kmariem18 on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 09:49.

My elbows have been a problem for a while - would love to try the new Olay wash!

sanrosha on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 09:49.

I am 64 and just noticed in the last 2 years that my elbows and knees have excess sagging skin. I apply lotion several times a day and that helps to smooth the skin. So I would love to win Olay's new anti-aging lotion when I take a bath or shower. Every little bit does help!!!

epillersdorf on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 09:54.

This sound good and I would use it - I am over 60 and could use younger-looking skin. I use many Olay products and will probably try this even if I don't win it.

fwitt07 on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 10:16.

My elbows have been a problem for years. I would love to have a product that would help. they are dry and rough all the time, especially in winter, when they snag on my clothes.

belindabg on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 10:16.

I'd love to try this product - for the smoothing properties. Plus, everything Olay has ever made and marketed that I've used has turned out to be a great product. I love this company!

hodgepodgemb on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 10:17.

My mind thinks younger than my body looks. At 68 I can use all the help I can get.

roxcap on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 10:29.

This product sounds interesting. At 57 my face looks 40...and my body is pretty good. But I am starting to notice that my body is not keeping up with my face in the firm and fit category! I have great face products...but nothing that wows me for the body. I would love to try this.

jomikey06 on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 10:37.

This stuff sounds wonderful and if will help skin (mine is 55) feel and look less dry I will sing its praises and my husband will join in.

maciberkeley on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 10:53.

My face is still doing well due to good care (and genes) but I notice the rest of me is having issues. I would love to see if this can help with the crepey skin I am getting especially on my upper arms.

sharon910 on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 10:54.

at 68 i wonder if there is anythin go help sagging skin from loss of elasticity. Would love to try yours

begil_2000 on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 11:04.

I'm beginning to notice that all "my parts" are starting to slid down my body a little more with each passing year! I'm 52, what will I trip over by time I'm 70?

bclaxton on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 11:05.

I turn 62 this year and while I think like I'm a lto younger my skin has developed the distressing habit of sagging here and there. I use your regenerist line of products on my face, so this wash is a natural for me. Hopefully.

mmont55 on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 11:35.

I am 55 now and have noticably seen my body again and not gracefully as I had wished for. I need something that will bring back that youthful appearance to my skin. And I am hoping this is it.

debmcdonald on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 11:39.

I've been an Olay user and would love to try their new body wash!!

mabrei on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 11:43.

As a professional I am conscious of the way I look. I exercise regularly, eat healthy, and apply both sunblocks and moisturizers. Winning Olay's new anti-aging body wash would be yet a another worthy item to add to my must use list.

pamm.peterson on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 11:58.

If this body wash will help ease away the old me.lease please help me into the new me. I do shower often this seems like it could be a quick fix.

It would be great to find a way to deal with the loss of elasticity. I would love to try this.

jjosemans on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 12:46.

I just turned 52 the beginning of June and lately, I've been noticing the increase of cellulite in my thigh area and increased dryness all over. I've tried several OTC products and so far haven't found anything that really works. I am open to any suggestions and would love to try the Olay body wash

mspurplelady11 on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 12:46.

I have been swimming to lose weight & I am happy about the weight loss but not happy with the appearance of my skin. I would love an opportunity to "brighten" this dull skin.

Rita Snipes on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 12:47.

I use Olay products already and love them!! I would really like to try this product because, just knowing Olay, I have confidence in it already!!

eudoxia.jason on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 13:19.

my mother introduced me to Oil of Olay many years ago and, along with the advice she has given over the years, this is one of the best things she could have done. I appreciate the information to manage the "aging process" now that I am FOF

valorosa on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 13:23.

I do a lot of gardening so any product would be fabulous if it can help me with my skin.

f_kranzberg on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 13:29.

I have been using the Olay Total Effect Fragrance Free UV Facial Moisturizer since it first came out, and I love it. It's light weight but completely hydrating, and the UV protection is a must. I can imagine that another product from the Total Effects line would be great, and would love a chance to find out for myself.

dfkinton on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 13:38.

As I am turning 57 on Sunday, I have plenty of sags that could benefit from Olay!

scotthexter on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 15:07.

On the inside, I feel like I'm still in my forties. But my skin tells no lies, so I'd like to look on the outside the way I feel in my mind. Anything that's anti-aging gets my vote! Hope I get the opportunity to try Olay's new body wash to see if it works for me.

cdg_48 on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 15:25.

At 53 I am noticing a thinning of skin, lost elasticity and just plain dullness. My skin needs nourishing as well as moisturizing. Sounds like this product was made for my needs.

sisterjtc on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 16:00.

Olay products have always been a part of my skin care routine. Would love to try this anti aging product.

LindaSecretan on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 16:56.

Olay has never disappointed me. I'm inclined to take a before and after just for fun. will surely give it a try

m8200n on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 17:10.

OK, it's swimsuit season again and now I've definitely noticed that my legs and torso are in dire need of SOME anti-aging agent. Olay - I'd love to give you a try and let you know how my skin tone improves!

mathmom on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 17:14.

I've been using Olay Body Wash for years, but at 57, it's time to try total Effects anti-aging body wash!

ccorey on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 17:33.

Olay's new anti-aging body wash would be a great treat for my skin, which is 54, rough and in desparate need.

Denise Tremaine on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 17:39.

I just turned 50 the end of May, and have noticed that some days my skin feels quite dry, and other days, oily...I am still getting the occasional breakout on my face (really???)...and the lotion I use changes depending on how my skin "feels"...I would love to try a new product designed especially for the needs of the "over 50" crowd...thanks to Olay for creating such a wonderful product...I do feel "Fab over Fifty" and hope to continue feeling this way!

peatthered on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 17:48.

how nice that we can take action on so many fronts! Olay wash sounds like a good addition to the arsenal!

yyoerger on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 18:45.

Leave it to Olay to come through with the latest! Having always had dry skin, I've been using basic Olay moisturizer for at least 30 years, and credit it to a large part for comments I often get about looking 10 years younger than I am. And of course hasn't stayed stagnant those 30 years; it has grown with the times with a whole range of choices for those of us who have "grown up" with the products.

cobrateacher on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 18:52.

Now that I've retired, I feel as if I finally have time to do the best I can with what I am. Olay's products are my faves in almost every way. A firming body wash would absolutely fit in with their wonderful facial products, so I definitely want to try it!

Gwen Dixie on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 18:57.

I'd love to try something new for moistureizing.

scatus on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 19:12.

My face (luckily) defies my age! However I cannot say that about the rest of my body! Everything seems to be drooping and sagging these days. Would LOVE to chance to try this!!

marji on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 20:12.

After 72 years of being out in the sun as much as possible, I'd be grateful for any & all help available to banish saggy, dry skin! Rush some deep penetrating moisture & anti-aging body wash, SAP. Thank you for the good advice given in your article.

bconsbruck on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 20:28.

I grew up at the beach in Southern California before there was any talk of the damaging effects of so much sun exposure or the need for protection. As a result at 67 my skin really shows it. Any help I can get is a godsend. I love Olay products.

mmimilinda on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 21:17.

How exciting to be alive at this age (65) in this age, of second (and then some) chances. As I am entering the "dating scene" once again, I'd love to enjoy this chance to make myself look and feel as beautiful and sexy and desirable as I feel.

wbean53 on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 22:31.

I would love to try this product for my really dry legs and arms. Olay is what I use on my face and it seems to work well!

smdoerr on Fri, 07/02/2010 - 01:21.

I would love to try out this new Olay body wash. My skin is so dry it really needs some help.
