Q&A With Olay: More Than Just a Pretty Face

Evolutionary psychologist at the University of Goettingen

Dr. Bernhard Fink is an evolutionary psychologist at the University of Goettingen in Goettingen, Germany. His cutting edge research on the biology of attraction has been featured in major publications from Science & Vie to Vogue.

Most women think the secret to a youthful look is all in the face, but a recent study from evolutionary psychologist Dr. Bernhard Fink proves that perceptions of beauty extend far beyond eyes, lips, and cheekbones. Here he answers readers’ anti-aging questions and shares his unexpected findings.

  • Q: Dear Dr. Fink,
ImageIn the past few years, I’ve noticed that my hands have really started to show their age. I look down and see the wrinkled hands of a much older woman (I’m only 32!). Is this something that people notice, and should I be concerned?
    --Radhika
    • A: Dear Radhika,
Our research indicates that the body skin around the neck and chest, arms, and, yes, hands are important areas for women in terms of age perception. What this means is you should take extra care of your hands. Use a heavier moisturizer and select products that have specific anti-aging benefits, and protect your hands with gloves in cold, dry weather.
  • Q: Dear Dr. Fink,
ImageI’m in my mid-30s and have started to date a younger man – ten years younger. I’m in good shape, run or practice yoga almost every day, and always use a facial moisturizer and SPF daily. What other steps could I be taking to maintain a youthful appearance?
    --Sandy
    • A: Dear Sandy,
Body skin has a far bigger impact on age perception and attractiveness than most women realize. Young looking body skin can decrease the overall perception of your age. Keeping your skin moisturized is one of the most basic things you can do to prevent visible signs of aging on the skin, as is using gentle shower products that are formulated to exfoliate and hydrate. It’s a food daily practice to apply SPF on your face and exposed arms, legs, shoulders, and hands.
  • Q: Dear Dr. Fink,
I live in Orange County – the plastic surgery capital of the world. Many of my friends are turning to surgical solutions to combat aging, but I’d love to explore other avenues. I am noticing the skin around my chest, upper arms, and, oddly enough, my ankles, is starting to look dull and discolored. Do you have any advice?
    -- Therese
    • A: Dear Therese,
To date, the focus on skin care treatments to maintain a youthful and healthy appearance is still on the face. Yet, the body parts you mention all strongly signal age. You don’t necessarily have to undergo invasive procedures. There are ways to rejuvenate skin through non-surgical means. Using products that go beyond basic moisturization to also provide anti-aging benefits can be a big help.

"I have just discovered this entire site and amazed that there have been NO comments on this page for almost a year! I am 73 and have used Avon skin care for 40 years. I am most often thought to be in my late 50's. And the products I use are most economical."

"I agree that this does seem to be an ad for Olay. That being said, I do like Olay and many of their skincare products contain proven anti-aging and antioxidant ingredients. Unfortunately, most of their products contain fragrance. As we age, our skin can become more sensitive. This is especially true for those of us with light hair and fair skin. It is well documented that fragrance can be a skin irritant. I fail to understand why companies like Olay insist on adding fragrance, especially to facial products; it is unnecessary and counter intuitive."

"I love Olay Products. I recently bought a book called :Don't go the Cosmetic counter without me. They recommed a lot of Olay products. Their products are resonable too."

Younger looking skin..
"I started to use Oil of Olay about three months ago. I started to see changes in my face. I am 37 yrs old. I had circles under my eyes for years. I started to use the Oil of OLay treatment for the eyes. People have asked me what happen to your cicles under your eyes. I told them Oil of Olay has really been making a difference in my eyes, especially the daily facial cream and over night cream altogether. I am faithful to it every night. "

"Like I said earlier, I am turning 65 this year and I have been using most of the Olay products on my face, neck and body. No one ever guesses my correct age. I am always very happily mistaken for mid forties. Maybe part of this wonderfull experience is genetic but I know that using Olay products has really helped me to look allot younger than my age. Thank you Oil of Olay."

Olay Product
"Is this site promoting Olay products or do they really suggest that they work? It seems to be that it is marketing hype for Olay. I use the Olay body wash and Total Effect Exfoliate Body Wash and i'm not seeing any huge changes after almost a year."
