Good Morning! Could you help me answer or push me in the right direction to find research- How long should a woman wait to have a surgical procedure like liposuction after having a recent abortion?

After having a surgical procedure there are both physical and mental issues which need to settle prior to considering another type of procedure especially if it is cosmetic in nature. There is no magic amount of time but it would be reasonable to wait at least 3 months if not a bit longer before proceeding. A consult with your surgeon of choice and the decision they make with you is going to be the final answer and I would encourage you to thoroughly discuss it with your doctor.

I don’t think there are any definitive studies that I am aware of off the top of my head. I will try to search further but to my knowledge, if you had no complications such as bleeding and infection and you didn’t need a blood transfusion or hospitalization after the procedure, you can do it 2 months after. The reason I would wait this long is because your ability to clot your blood can be abnormal for a while after abortion and you need to wait long enough for your blood count to be back to normal. You should always check with your primary physician first if you have one. If you don’t have one, get one. Best of luck .

Provided you are in good general health, your chemistries and blood count are OK, and there are no other contraindications (reasons to delay or avoid surgery), liposuction may be safely done in close temporal proximity to D&C. Cosmetic surgery is generally contra-indicated during pregnancy, but not after termination of pregnancy.

I’m not sure there is a right answer to this question – to be on the safe side, I’d recommend waiting 3 months post surgery (of any kind) before embarking on another surgical procedure.
