Are there limitations to which procedure I would have to undergo if I am on Coumadin? I have looked into getting breast augmentation for a few years, but I want to make a good decision about it. I am only 25 but I will be on Coumadin the rest of my life.

You need to consult with the doctor that has prescribed the coumadin for you about coming off of the medication temporarily or using an alternative. When considering an elective cosmetic surgery you want to keep your risk as low as possible, and being on coumadin while undergoing a breast augmentation definitely increases your risk for complications.

Thank you for your question. You would need to consult with your hematologist about going off of the Coumadin and bridging the surgery with Lovenox or another short-acting blood thinner so that you can be off the thinners for the actual surgery and resume afterwards.

Why are you on lifelong Coumadin? This makes a difference in your management.

I would also concur that you need to talk to your hematologist. It would be too risky to consider breast augmentation on Coumadin, in my opinion. I do have several patients on Eliquis which is apparently a newer medication that in some indications hematologists are using now, and it is easier to manage with surgery because of its shorter half-life. I would ask your hematologist about this one. I hope this helps.

Yes. The risks may be too high. Talk with your hematologist. With lovenox bridging and or a vena cava filter surgery could be possible, but the risks might very well outweigh the benifits. Good luck
