Liposuction is a tool used to remove excess fat, but is not a weight loss procedure. At your current weight you are at an increased risk for complications from elective surgery. I would advise reducing your weight before proceeding with liposuction.

    Hi Marletha,

You can get liposuction without getting a lapband or gastric bypass, however, you must keep in mind that liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, but rather a body contouring one. You will see the best result from liposuction if you are near your goal weight and have pockets of exercise resistant fat. Additionally, because you have had children, it is likely that you have loose skin on your tummy and lax muscles beneath. Because liposuction only addresses fat, it will do nothing to correct the loose skin and relaxed muscles, and in fact, might make the area of concern look worse. You are likely a candidate for a tummy tuck.

Yes you can but keep in mind that liposuction only removes the fat under the skin and does not address any sagging skin. If the lower abdominal skin is sagging, you may need to also consider a “mini tummy tuck”. A mini tummy tuck is something of a misnomer in that the incision has to be as long as there is hanging skin. Also known as a panniculectomy, it is a much easier recovery than a full traditional tummy tuck.

Although liposuction eliminates excess fat, alone it does not achieve significant weight loss. We limit liposuction to no more than 5 liters as a safety precaution to avoid severe complications. Having said this, you may undergo liposuction more than once. Seek consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon to explore your options.

Liposuction and contouring is a procedure done by plastic surgeons and is not a procedure we do to accomplish weight loss if that is your goal. It simply provides some shaping and contour improvement with little change to your actual weight typically. It is important to understand that a good dietary/nutritional plan and exercise are other important aspects that if maintained well will help you to maintain your results. Lap band and gastric sleeve are “surgical weight loss” options that facilitate weight loss and are really a totally different type of surgery done by bariatric general surgeons.

Yes you CAN have lipo without lapband but your results and expectations will need to be discussed with the doctor Of course, it would be much better to be your ideal weight before liposuction.
