In 2004, FOF Sandy Stein and her family were struggling to make ends meet. Throughout the hard times in her life, Sandy says she’d often pray to her father, who had passed away years before. In a dream that same year, Sandy says her father came to her with the idea for Finders Key Purse — a keychain to help you find your keys in your bag. He gave her specific details, from it being “shaped like a U” to having “a design on one side and a clasp on the other.”
The next morning, Sandy got to work. She went into her office, broke off a prong to a photo holder she had on her desk, and shaped it just the way she remembered the invention from her dream. The resulting object became the first prototype of Finders Key Purse, a keychain with a hook that holds on to your purse. Later versions evolved to include a charm that sits on the outside your bag and a clasp that hangs on the inside of the bag for you to attach to your keychain.
Sandy started marketing her new invention the best way she knew how. “I had a built-in sales team. I had been [a flight attendant] for over 30 years, and I knew so many flight attendants,” Sandy says. “If someone’s wearing red lipstick and we like it, we say, ‘What is that red lipstick? And where’d you get it?’ And then we’re all wearing that lipstick. I harnessed the power of women networking.” Sandy gave her fellow flight attendants a commission on sales and paid them a bonus if they referred other flight attendants to sell Finders Key Purse. “I started with 20 of my friends in 2004,” says Sandy. “By the end of 2005, I had 2,000 friends selling Finders Key Purse, and we sold a million in the United States.”
To date, Sandy has sold over 8 million Finders Key Purse, which have been featured on Good Morning America and QVC. The clever key chain has been sold in over 10,000 stores across the U.S., from retail chains like Hallmark Stores and Hobby Lobby to independent car washes and tattoo parlors. “Pretty much anywhere women shop [or] are going to go into, we ask, ‘Do you want to sell this in your store?’ and we put it in there!” says Sandy.
The best part about owning a Finders Key Purse? “I know my keys are right there,” says Sandy. “I don’t have to dig around, I don’t have to go looking. I know they’re right in my purse, and I don’t have to worry.”
