{Style Expert} What do you think of this look?

We spotted this belted beauty outside of Barneys in NYC. We loved the kimono-style coat, but is her style everyone’s cup of tea? Read what our style experts think, and then tell us: What do you think of her look?

Glenyse Thompson: “I love it–this FOF has it going on. All the elements in her outfit balance together perfectly; from the chunky turtleneck and statement necklace to the belted coat. The colors compliment her skin tone too. She looks chic, comfortable and fabulous. I personally would like to know where she got that coat, and If I were her friend I would be trying to borrow that necklace!”

Glenyse Thompson is a personal home and wardrobe stylist and the creator of Styleosophy.

.

Sherrie Mathieson: “This refined-looking lady understands quality and style. Every item she is wearing says ‘well made’, and ‘high-end’–the best cashmere and leather. I love her sporty, ageless, flat boots and how she tucked her pants into them without excessive bulk. (Leggings would have been too “young”). However, the lovely necklace doesn’t integrate and the look would be sleeker without it. Sunglasses that were neutral without those purple lenses, would be better.”

Sherrie Mathieson is a leading style expert and Random House author of Steal this Style and Forever Cool.

.

Sandra Soich: “This woman definitely has style, but too much happening in one outfit. The pieces are all beautiful on their own, but not mixed together.  The big problem is the riding boots. They are great–but not with the ensemble. Another issue…is this outfit age appropriate?  Tending to think not. She’s definitely trying too hard.”

Sandra Soich is wardrobe stylist to the stars and founder of YourFashionTherapist.com.

.

Terry Gibralter: “There’s a lot I like about this look and some things I don’t. The belted wrap coat is great and given her trim figure, she wears it well. I like the leather tie belt and the sweater underneath.  As much as I like the necklace, I don’t feel it works as a coat accessory and it feels at odds with the tailored ensemble.  I also don’t like what looks to be pants tucked into her boots, it feels a little heavy and awkward and I would prefer a sleeker look on the bottom–narrow wool pants with a brogue shoe or slim fitting boots on a slightly higher heel. I do love her chic bob and cool sunglasses!”

Terry Gibralter is the Sr. Vice President and Creative Director at Grey advertising as well as a fashion stylist and the creator of these clever work accessories.

.

Lovey Dash: “I love this look–tres chic! Love the belted coat layered over her cozy, contrasting turtleneck sweater. The boots are great, but I think I see baggy denim jeans peeping out. That is a no no. Thank goodness it’s mostly covered.”

Lovey Dash is a Beverly Hills-based stylist. She was formerly in VIP sales for Louis Vuitton on Rodeo Drive.

.

Susan Hersh: “When I first saw this woman, ‘chic and luxurious’ came to mind. The short-sleeve cape is an exquisite outwear piece and layers beautifully over the chunky turtleneck. The black riding boots polish off the look and the necklace is an artistic statement. This lady has great style and is an influence for all ages.”

I love her look! She flashes a great smile that makes me smile back. CoCo Chanel said, “When you get dressed, put on everything, and then look in the mirror and take one thing off.” I would have left that necklace at home – what the heck is that anyway?!!

BEAUTIFUL! The only thing I would change is the necklace.

forget the outfit, i love her, she looks like a really great lady and carries herself as that, ok, the outfit, for her i think she looks really cool, to me when an older woman refuses to give in to whatever age she is and decides when she is ready to go out and face her day and puts on an outfit that totally fits her personality, you go girl!!! she looks very classy and awesome to me. LOVE IT!!

I think she looks ageless. I do not think she needs that necklace and I would like to see a higher heel.

I adore everything but the jolt of the necklace. Something more neutral, but still statement making. She’s a beauty!

i love the way she looks. she could have used slimmer pants and carried it off- but she looks timelessly elegant- without the neck piece. I will remember this elegant styling.

Yeah, what about this isn’t age appropriate? She looks fine to me, and I’m a younger person who reads this blog (I totally respect older women who can rock fashionable ensembles).

She’s rocking it. I wonder what purse she put with this outfit.

I think she looks wonderful! Great coat, glasses and boots. The necklace really grabs the eye, perhaps a bit too obviously. The coral/beige tone is very aggressive, and might have been better if the chain was about 4″ shorter and the colors perhaps a light amethyst and silver combo.

I agree it was probably chosen to go with the bag color which only peeks out from the shoulder, perhaps if the bag were shown it wouldn’t be so discordant.

I envy this woman the figure, and the where-with-all to put this look together! I say good goin’ lady!

Hi, I don’t understand how you ask “what do you think of this look” and then don’t give me an opportunity to say. Even if it was two boxes – one for yes and one for no, that people can tick. It would then give people an idea of where their own style fits on the register. I feel this is more about pushing the opinions of the stylists on us, and less about what we may think.

Love it. She is definitely trim enough to wear this and, although Kimono inspired, it is not too bulky and cut fairly slim so that it does not stand away from the body too much. She has pretty hair and her makeup is tasteful. I should be so lucky as to look like this.

Love her look! While the kimono-style top would not work for me, this lady really pulls it all together nicely. I love seeing a “woman of a certain age” dressed stylishly. I own a pair of boots like the ones she’s wearing & they are a classic style & the flat sole makes them great for walking around town . She’s lovelyco & chic !

The lady wears her look very well. I would have preferred to see a boot that shows a little curve of her legs. The straight legged boot makes her legs look a little stiff, otherwise she looks great!

This woman has great style and she is still proud of her looks even though she is FOF! In fact she reminds me of the 90 something Iris Apfel with the chunky necklace and boots and sunglasses! I do not think she is wearing “riding” boots just high and stylish flat leather boots but then I wouldn’t know one end of a horse from the other. So I disagree with your experts—she is not dressing too young (no plunging neckline nor mini skirt), her outfit works well with her body shape, i definitely do NOT see anything hanging over or stuffed into her high boots, and I do not think she has too much going on if that is the correct phrase in English! However, I am French and very Parisian and a former stylist for the late Yves Saint Laurent, so I may have a slightly more global point of view. Tres chic!

I love this. The necklace is the right proportion for the fabric of the ruana..no my personal style but obiously is hers…that said..those boots look comforatable and were made for walking in the city and scream expenisve. The lenses are her personal preference and compliment her beautiful hair…You younger ladies will find as you age tinted lenses have nothing to do with “fashion” as much as they do with eye health. This is the first street fashion look that does credit to mature style in good taste and function…BRAVO

    To add one thing more.

In the past the “experts” have given very high marks, even accolades, to women that were dressed, to put it mildly, like bag ladies.

The fact that they have the nerve to diss even one aspect of this woman’s attire is laughable to say the least.

The only one of the experts that didn’t have a negative to say was Susan.

And those who don’t like the necklace? Would you rather she wore something more “common” and predictable, like everyone else would have done?

I would have loved to see the bag she was carrying.

You guys that think there is something wrong with the pants must have better eyes than me because I can’t tell what kind she has on. But I don’t see anything hanging over the boots.

I love her look especially the coat layered over the sweater and the chic black boots. The statement necklace is probably not necessary and would look better teamed with a simple shift dress.
