I use 2 products on my nails-everyday- and it has made a huge difference in the strength of my nails. Burt’s Bees cuticle cream and Burt’s Bees Almond Milk hand cream. I put this on my nails every night and then put spa gloves on my hands. Let it sit on your nails for as long as you can. Has made a huge difference in my nails. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dj-OMqSfRng

I used to have the same problem and nothing from Sally Hansen or Nailtek or anybody else (and I bought them ALL) helped in any way; then I started taking biotin and horsetail (which is silica) on a daily basis and after a few months, my nails are stronger than they have ever been. I buy both from Swanson, which is an online vitamin company that my retired pharmacist next-door-neighbor told me about. They are the least expensive place of all to buy supplements from and they deliver quickly.

I agree with the recommendation for biotin. I am recovering from having acrylic and gel nails for years (FYI I wouldn’t really recommend them as its taken me FIVE MONTHS for my nails to grow back and I still have 3 nails that are not 100% normal) and started taking biotin and have found my nails to be stronger and smoother. You can always paint them if you want color!

Nails splitting down the middle is usually a sign of something lacking, nutritionally. I had this problem for a few years — until I started eating (food-grade) diatomaceuos earth. Great for all KINDS of things, and my nails stopped splitting.

I have a thumb nail which has been split for thirty years. The ONLY solution is either getting acrylic applied by a manicurist or the newer healthy option is getting gels also called shellac nails applied. Deciding to go for manicures every two weeks, including the expense is a hurdle to cross, but the upside is your nails will always look good and you can use your hands without the pain of the split bleeding.
At first I’d only get the thumb fixed, but eventually just went for the whole thing. I don’t think any “product” fixed this problem. Good luck.

have your thyroid checked, and take b-complex, vit c, and cal-magnesium supplements. If you drink pop, the phosphorus is depleting your calcium levels.

My nails have been doing the SAME thing. When visiting my doctor about a month ago, he mentioned that he wanted me to take Vitamin D regularly (now it seems higher doses are being recommended). My nails have now stopped splitting and are growing!! I don’t know if it’s the Vitamin D but it’s the only thing I’ve changed in the last few months.

Work from the inside out….. A diet with lots of protein and drinking lots of water helps from the inside. Massaging Vitamin E oil or a cuticle oil on your entire nail bed at night will help nourish the nail. Aslo keeping your hands and nails moisturized with lotion helps! Any nail treatment will help protect your nail from cracking once you have given them moisture.
In addition, I always wear gloves on cold days to portect both my hands and nails from the elements.
    Good luck!

Although I have always been a fan of all of the Sally Hanson nail products, and still am, I found a product that is even better than Sally Hansen for this problem.
For some reason, the fingernails on my right hand have always been very brittle, and have vertical lines.
Avon’s Strong Results is a true miracle product.
If used everyday or night for at least two weeks, you will see an amazing improvement to your nails.
If you use this product, you will be able to enjoy nail polish again. My nails were so brittle, that wearing nail polish only made it worse.
Thanks to Avon’s Strong Results, I now have nail polish in my cabinets to enjoy wearing whenever I want.
There’s no fancy bottle, in fact, it’s a simple black bottle with a simple white top.
It’s not thick, it’s thin like water, but when brushed on bare nails, dries almost instantly because your nails absorb it.
I always have this product in my cabinet, to have available as soon as I see my nails getting brittle.
This product is the very best…inexpensive too.
    Best wishes,
    Linda

Mine do, too. I just get fake ones. Alternatively, you can drink gelatin and eat more protein.Sometimes that helps.

    Sharon,
Nail problems can be more than just cosmetic. They can indicate nutritional or other internal medical issues. In addition to using the nail strengthening products below, please see a board-certified dermatologist in person. Dermatologists work with nails, hair, and skin, and some even specialize in hair and nail issues, which can be very tricky and subtle and baffle many doctors. Good luck with pursuing this and finding out what you can do to make it go away.

Avon has a Nail Treatment called Silk Wrap. It is good for splitting nails. Also I would suggest a cuticle oil to rub in around the cuticles. Also drink water as it will hydrate your skin and that may help with the splitting. The nail bed under the nail needs nourishment just like our body.

Sally Hansen Triple Strong Nail Fortifier is an excellent product. At nighttime, massage olive oil into your cuticles, then add the fortifier. It works quite well, and is not expensive.
Another product is Nailtek. It is more expensive, and is usually sold by Nail Technicians.
    Good luck for stronger nails!
