I need help! I am 53, post menopausal, with NO fashion sense. I have been young, thin, and semi cute with little effort. Now, I have gained weight since menopause, and am not sure how to dress for my age. I am 5″6′ and 165#s. 10-12, up from my lifelong size 4. No curves, straight up and down.

Why do we always worry about our age! Jeans, tshirts, pencils skirts etc! Wear what flatters you, color it up add chunky jewelry etc! Look at the current styles then add your own flair.

hi :)) I totally understand what you are going throughout. I have gone from a 4 to an 8 and it is a big issue for me as well. So what I would suggest to you is to wear layers and loose fitting clothing. Ilene Fisher, or any type of relaxed loose fitting clothing, linen is good and Anthropology has some great things that are stylish, wearable, comfortable and NOT HOT in temperature , but cool and great for menopause. I hope this helps :)) Betsy Karp The Colour Coach

Thanks Betsy! Do you have any store suggestions for those brands? Sorry to sound dense, but never been a shopper. I have no mom or sister, my daughter is out of state, and my friend circle is very small!

Betsy, It’s Eileen Fisher. And “Nursewratchet59” they have free standing stores and the line is in most dep’t stores. But I respectfully differ about Anthropology –unless you are under 40 years old.

    Hi,
Have you read my 2 books? I dedicated the books exclusively to the style challenges we have to face after 50. “Forever Cool” and Steal This Style”(Random House) show real people like you–diverse backgrounds, baby boomers and older, personalities, varied races and most importantly figures they need to reassess more often now. In my style consulting I address EVERYTHING–head to toe….and I specialize in your, not unusual, dilemma. Best, Sherrie

I will look into the books! Short of paying a stylist! Thanks!

I am 5″6′, 153lbs, size 10, but I have (lots of 🙂 curves. The very first thing that comes to mind to solve the “straight up and down” look is – Peplum. Peplum, less around the waste, more towards the back. Secondly – my guess is your legs are your best feature (?). Yet you are 53, so I wouldn’t recommend anything above the knee. The answer is – straight skirt, with lace on the bottom. This way you will show off your legs while still wearing the “appropriate” length. And of course lightweight knit cardigans – stock up on them – you wear them with pants & T-shirt, with skirts, with dresses to cover up your arms… Stop by if you are in Scarsdale (NY) area – so that I can help you in person

I like the skirt idea, yes, I have a butt. That is my only curve. My arms are in decent shape, I lift weights quite a bit, not that it has slowed the menopausal middle stuff. Would love to go to scarsdale!
