{Style Expert} What do you think of this look?

Another fashion week FOF–but is she a fashion victim or a fashion champ?

FOF Terry Gibraltar: “The white boots are so unflattering on her, and the combo of heavy ruched skirt and fur trimmed jacket don’t do her any favors either. I really don’t like anything about this outfit! I say, start over.”

Terry Gibralter is the founder of Bespoke Custom Shopping Tours, carefully-crafted shopping “vacations” and a self-proclaimed, “fashion-obsessed” FOF.

FOF Susan Grant: “Coincidentally, I returned from Paris just a few hours ago and can report that white footwear is a big trend. That said, this isn’t a chic way of pulling it off. The look would work better if the boots were worn with an all black outfit and a longer skirt.”

Susan Grant is merchandise manager for Muse, a full-service jewelry showroom.

FOF Sherrie Mathieson: “A black-and-white palette can be well done–but she uses it to grab attention rather than enhance her body. The jacket narrows her shoulders, the skirt widens her hips, and her body length is chopped along the “checkerboard.” Would she switch the bottom to a sleek wide-legged black pant and black boot? Hope so!”

Sherrie Mathieson is a leading style expert and Random House author of Steal this Style and Forever Cool.

FOF Gail Garramone: “The boots would work better with a less complicated look up top, perhaps a monochromatic one. And the proportion of the shoes to her legs is not right–she looks like she stepped into marshmallows.”

Gail Garramone is a veteran V.P. of Liz Claiborne Inc. where she traveled around the country with Tim Gunn producing fashion workshops.

Sandra Soich: “It’s wrong. This lovely lady just doesn’t have the right frame for this look….thick middle, heavy knees and calves. Everything is chopped and not flowing.”

Sandra Soich is wardrobe stylist to the stars and founder of YourFashionTherapist.com.

The white boots with the black nylons is a no no. The skirt is unattractive and she looks like she is dressed for spring with the white boots and winter with the coat and scarf. Make up your mind what season you are dressing for. That is a fashion tragedy.

    This is totally wrong!
Even for a topmodel with good proportions, this is just awful.
The jacket is too casual to match with the skirt, not to mention the white shoes with black tights (that are not thick enough, they should be opaque)
This is a typical example of mixing and matching black and white pieces without questioning the individual style of each item. Not only colours , but also fabric and style should be taken into account when combining your pieces to create a coordinating outfit. Lonneke

This is my short comment, she looks terrible. Nothing seems to go together even though she’s wearing black and white. The fashion experts say “less is more” and they’re right on about this outfit. Throw the boa out. The lines of the jacket and the skirt are too poofy. A well tailored top and a pencil skirt would at least make her look more professional. If black hose and white shoes are the thing to wear, I hate it. Those awful looking white boot shoes and black hose cut her off at the ankle making her legs look fatter. She needs to cut the whole cuff off to make a sleeker line leading up to the skirt.

To be honest, she looks like she got dressed in the dark. I love the white boots, except they are lost on this outfit, the skirt I am honestly lost for words, this entire outfit is one of what I call a head turner, but in a bad way, I love when you are dressed to the 9’s and people actually take a double take of your outfit and complinment you, this is one where people look twice and try to figure out what happened here. She needs to start from scratch.

I’d love to see the boots with something oolala!

  9. Barbara Flournoy says:

The fur boa looks like it was added as an afterthought. The skirt looks bulky and makes her hips look wide. At first glance, the back of the skirt almost looks like it is “caught” in her underwear (like someone did not tell her to pull her skirt down after she left the ladies room). The white boots catch the eye and takes away from her entire look but not in a flattering way. The boots almost look like orthopedic shoes (the kind you wear after foot surgery).

Perhaps if she had on a long black dress which would make her appear taller, it would work but not with her height. The whole entire outfit is a mess and personally, I wouldn’t be caught dead in those shoes. They are ugly and them being white makes them standout even more. No, no, and no!!

  15. Debbie Martin says:

I think this woman made a valiant effort to make a classic black and white ensemble look interesting, but think she ignored her physique and tried just a little too hard. As she styled herself, I think she probably looked at the individual pieces and forgot to look at the total picture.

    REPLY
  16. Vicki Wobrock says:

The individual pieces are great, stylish pieces, but they do not work together. The biggest flaw is the contrast of black, opaque hose with the white boots. The most slimming “trick” for anyone is to blend from head to toe by wearing the right colors for hair color and skin tone and wearing the appropriate shapes, lengths, etc. for your body type. This outfit chops her image into blocks and pieces. The clothing also does not complement her body shape, e.g., jacket ends at the wrong place which does not flatter her hips. A jacket just a little longer would cover the hips and not bring as much attention to them. I give her credit for trying but this just doesn’t work! God bless her for trying!

I totally agree. It is not a question of what’s hot and what is now, but what makes you look good. This outfit does nothing for the wearer that I see. By the way the fashion industry does no favors for tall women over a size 14 either. I am 61, but I am not dead. I like the clothes worn on the Golden Girls better that some of the crap that I see today.

  24. Diane says:

The same jacket, with tailored, more fitted black pants and the same boots in black would make her appear taller and slimmer. The skirt’s style as well as the length make her appear short and pudgy. I am way over fifty (almost 69) and I still pay close attention to how I look. Being older does not mean looking unkempt and frumpy!

  25. Marla Davis says:

The only pretty thing about that outfit is the coat but the tabs on the coat need to go. A pretty black skirt, black pants, or even skinny jeans would help show the coat off and make the whole look be more balanced. I think the white shoes are not that attractive with this outfit and putting them against the black stocking is too severe.

It’s so sad to see a woman fall victim to the latest fashion trends. Trends are just that. They are not meant for everyone. Women should be honest with themselves about their bodies when it comes to fashion. This look is completely disjointed and under balanced. I’m sure this woman’s body is much more proportioned then this outfit makes her appear. I like the jacket, but she needs to lose the skirt completely along with the black hose. A longer gored skirt or wide pants to balance the look with the shoes would help. She also needs to have a different blouse. A simple shell or cami under neath would lighten the top heavy fur.

Black boots would have been a little better, I believe. But, ya know, I was genetically doomed to heavy legs. I could be 100 lbs (and I have been), and it was all in my legs. Even avid running didn’t do it. So, I refuse to give her crap about her frame. She can wear whatever she wants! She’s over 50. It’s not what you look like; it’s what kind of person you are inside. And, if your husband (like mine) thinks you are hot, who cares what others think!!

While I think people should wear whatever they’re comfortable in and what makes them feel good – fashion wise, at the very minimum she should’ve worn black shoes. If the skirt, tights, and shoes were color blocked, it wouldn’t look nearly as choppy. I think the jacket is too boxy and the skirt is I’ll fitting…there’s just a lot going on with that ruching on the side. With different pieces, everything would look okay..together, not so much. YES, I do agree! This outfit is not a good look for the gal’s body type at all. She has managed to cut herself off by using the white coat over the ill-fitting black skirt and then again by putting the white boots on with the black tights. She is short and to add length, either a plain pencil skirt with the black tights and black boots/shoes or a long black skirt with black boots/shoes would be great! The white coat is not my first choice for her, but if it is her choice, she needs a sleeker scarf, something with some color, other than the oversized fur she is wearing.

She’s wearing some great pieces, but not together! That skirt is too full and gives her a dumpy look in the middle A longer pencil skirt would give her a better shape. The blousy skirt would be better with a figure-hugging top. Love the jacket and it would look so much better with tapered pants for a tailored look. Wait! Is the fur a separate piece? Did it come off a V-neck jacket or cardigan? It belongs back on the original garment. How about a soft black scarf tucked into the neck of the jacket. The slave-to-fashion boots prove some of us will buy anything if we think it’s “fashion!”

OMG this whole outfit is a complete misfit. I am shocked that this was put together. I would want a black skirt to fall to the knee and a tailored jacket and a white and black shoe to put the whole style together. The fur trimmed white jacket and the short skirt and white boots does not do this outfit justice. I think in general the fashion world forgets about the curvaceous, 14+ size women.
