{What do you think of this look?} Crafty? couture? (or crazy?)

Some FOFs are just cut from a different cloth. This FOF ditched the usual Dior, DVF and Donna Karan duds in favor of hand-stitching her own Fashion Week getup. Was this a fashion risk worthy of reward? Read what our FOF style gurus think. Then you weigh in. Tell us, is this look: Crafty? Couture? (Or crazy?)

FOF Susan Grant: “This certainly doesn’t flatter her nor have any attractive qualities on it’s own. The coat is too voluminous and garishly adorned with flowers and mismatched buttons. Her outfit screams ‘look at me,’ or actually, ‘look away!’”

Susan Grant is merchandise manager for Muse, a full-service jewelry showroom.

FOF Sherrie Mathieson: “This outfit has a ‘crafty,’ home-sewn look. It’s girly with a potholder motif. I’d never confuse this with couture. Was she wearing this long ensemble during daytime? If so, add ‘inappropriate’ to my less-than-enthused reaction.”

Sherrie Mathieson is a leading style expert and Random House author of Steal this Style and Forever Cool.

FOF Lovey Dash: “It is very crafty but not very couture. She could improve this look with black boots, leggings and a black top. She’d be better off without the dress entirely, it’s too glam with the casual coat.”

Lovey Dash is a Beverly Hills-based stylist. She was formerly in VIP sales for Louis Vuitton on Rodeo Drive.

FOF Sandra Soich: “Oh my! She’s dating herself with too much fabric for a mature woman. Something with cleaner, moving lines would be a better choice. This ensemble says, ‘matron.’”

Sandra Soich is wardrobe stylist to the stars and founder of YourFashionTherapist.com.

FOF Terry Gibralter: “I salute this FOF’s attempt to express herself through fashion, but it really looks like a home ec project gone astray. I don’t like the muddy-color palette paired with the badly appliqued pink flowers. Then there’s the striped, chain bag piped in red… Yikes! If you want to wear something this bold it must be impeccably tailored and well thought out.”

Terry Gibralter is the founder of Bespoke Custom Shopping Tours, carefully-crafted shopping “vacations” and a self-proclaimed, “fashion-obsessed” FOF.

FOF Susan Hersh: “This is definitely NOT couture. It looks more like a costume you’d see at Disney World. You could get lost in all that fabric, and even if not, it adds an extra ten pounds to your figure.  I cannot think of one place or event a woman could wear this.”

Susan Hersh is a Ford model and the host and executive producer of Meet The Experts.

FOF Linda Cohen:She obviously has her own point of view–I give her credit for that. She may be making a statement using recycled and vintage materials, but there is nothing appealing about this outfit at all for any FOF women. In the fashion world we used to call these home-economic  project looks ‘loving hands at home.'”

Linda Cohen owns her own consulting business specializing in retail merchandising.

    Bonjour!

I, once, as a College Freshman in Washington State, attempted to make myself a coat. I could wear it, but it screamed “homemade” from the roof tops… as “cute” as a would-be-home-ec projct this outfit is, it lacks a pulled together look… is neither craft, nor couture..and it is so ill-assembled that whatever hope to pass for clever fashionism is lost in the “clutter”. Take away the dress, unbutton it, as it is too tight, and wear high-heeled brown boots, bag and monochromatic brown pants and turtle.. let the coat stand alone… maybe that would work.. otherwise, take it apart and recycle its fabric…

It is a bit overdone for my taste–maybe smaller flowers on shorter stems spaced stragically for attention in other places and do away with the handreschief or whatever at top.

OK, you’re right not my thing either and the photo does not look as though it was well executed; but someone made it and thought enough of their efforts to share and ask for opinions.

BRAVE WOMAN! Kuddos. All creators put some of themselves into their work and IMHO, it is not easy to put yourself into such a vulnerable spot. I just think some of the criticism could have been more kindly worded.

I like the coat, the color and the flowers. I don’t like the style of the buttons. More time could have been taken in posing the picture, making sure the coat was hanging correctly (especially the closure below the buttons) and pressed or more “crisp” around the flowers and the collar. Also I would have chosen something different to wear underneath. Overall, I don’t think it deserves the harsh words. Not everyone likes to the cookie-cutter look.

I don’t think she is couture, crafty or crazy; just a bit eccentric. Whatever makes you happy, go for it, with some taste. If what you want is for people to look at you, that’s fine. However, what you wear will make people take notice and not necessarily in a positive way.

The lady needs some fasion help- ( and differnt style for her shape) – it’s not how much youp send- it is how you fit and wear it.

Even in an area where there is little or no fashion consciousness, this design is way too far out. Someone said it reminded her of something from a Disney project—-perhaps Beauty and the Beast? And I’m not referring to Beauty. It’s craft gone amok. Having done applique projects on clothing I know the work that went into this was prodigious. Hopefully it can be tamed just a tad for the next design.

I most definitely agree with the fashion biz women…this is so soooo bad…”crafty” stuff should never look, well, “crafty”, but subtle and as if someone’s hands didn’t make it…Oy, oy, oy…this woman has either a self-esteem, “look-at-me” problem, or she’s just clueless and only aims to please herself, in which case, her view of herself is skewed!

    i LOVE it!

there are two things i don’t like – the purse, and the collar on the coat. both easy fixes! trash the ugly purse and cut the collar off the coat (not the lapel, just the collar), which i’d replace with a satin ruffle, probably.

i really, really love the whole look (except the purse, which is just tacky)!

Dreadful-where to begin? Ill fitting, non figure flattering, too many things going on between “dress” and “casual”. None of the elements go “together”.

    REPLY
  27. Marcia says:

Where to begin? This combination of “things” is tacky, ill-fitting, and nothing goes together. The fabric and lines of the coat are not compatible with the “formal gown” fabric of the dress; the coat is misshapen and looks like it came out of a rag bag. I don’t even begin to understand the purse in combination with everything else. And the flowers/etc? Those kinds of appliques belong more on a quilt or wallhanging. Sigh. What a sad, sad mess.

Wow! This is certainly a lot of purple! Actually for a coat from Goodwill, with felt appliques by Grandma, it could be considered quite creative. I take it she was trying to show people that she still has that certain flair for fashion, but the economic thing just got in the way….so off to Goodwill! Michaels always has those great sales on felt. With a little bit of refurbished sheer living room curtain(for those elegant leaves), Oila! Grandma tacky! Throw in your 5 year old grandaughters stripey purse, and you have a look that people will be talking about for years!
Seriously, with the torso and bottom look shes got going on here, who needs(or can pay attention) her face?

  33. KarenSantaFe says:

As is, a nightmare. Everything I hate about hand-made, and I’ve got deep respect for hand-made.

But could it be fixed? Maybe. Take away the applique flowers, the blob of fabric in the front, the purse, the long dress underneath, the mismatched buttons. Have just the coat, by itself, with dark chocolate leggings, maybe high boots of the same color, a similar chocolate-toned ribbed turtleneck, clean accessories…. basically a slim silhouette underneath, lengthening the body, and there is something interesting to the bulk and slightly distressed aspect to that coat (the seaming, the scooped hem, the neck opening, the akimbo pocket… OK I might remove that pocket too). It could look cool for knocking around Soho on a Saturday.

I give the lady kudo’s for trying. She obviously has some talent if she fashioned that flower herself. I think the whole look is a bit misguided but it draws the eye. I am not sure the attention is all positive though. Maybe for her it is all about individuality and making a statement.

  36. RedRain says:

I’m sorry but this is just ill-fitting and ugly. I’ve seen nicer coats at Goodwill. The coat itself, without the hideous flowers, is cheap and it looks it. This is truly one of those “you can’t make a silk purse from a sow’s ear” type of things. When a piece of clothing wears you instead of your wearing it, don’t buy it or, if you did, throw it away!

  37. Deb says:

I agree with all of the comments shared. At another time and place the coat would be cute with skinny jeans and boots. I like artistic pieces in general, but they need to be worn carefully considering the event and the crowd.

Crafty. Bland, blobby, washed-out color, and screams “I made it myself and I need a tailoring class!” The flower applique would be better on a bedspread.

  40. Talliana says:

If she had taken the time to properly cut the fabric and sew, matched the buttons correctly and lost the flowers, changed the color to a more flattering one, properly hem, then the outfit would have been crafty. This looks like something I would have done in elementary school.

    REPLY
  41. Cynthia says:

The fabric has no structure, is wrinkled and an awful color. The cut is bad, the design is off and the sewing itself is terrible, look at how the fabric puckers and doesn’t lie flat. How hard do you have to try to make a too-tight, baggy outfit???

Oh my. I’ve aways felt that princess lines were flattering and I kind of get what she is trying to do in a hippie, recycle sort of way. But maybe for a high school kid, but maybe not. Sorry, just doesn’t make it for me. Perhaps it would have felt more up to date (though still funky) with fabric painting rather than bulky applique.

And the coat just is’t hanging right in the CF. Is that a flipped facing or a badly exicuted godet?
