I, once, as a College Freshman in Washington State, attempted to make myself a coat. I could wear it, but it screamed “homemade” from the roof tops… as “cute” as a would-be-home-ec projct this outfit is, it lacks a pulled together look… is neither craft, nor couture..and it is so ill-assembled that whatever hope to pass for clever fashionism is lost in the “clutter”. Take away the dress, unbutton it, as it is too tight, and wear high-heeled brown boots, bag and monochromatic brown pants and turtle.. let the coat stand alone… maybe that would work.. otherwise, take it apart and recycle its fabric…

BRAVE WOMAN! Kuddos. All creators put some of themselves into their work and IMHO, it is not easy to put yourself into such a vulnerable spot. I just think some of the criticism could have been more kindly worded.

I like the coat, the color and the flowers. I don’t like the style of the buttons. More time could have been taken in posing the picture, making sure the coat was hanging correctly (especially the closure below the buttons) and pressed or more “crisp” around the flowers and the collar. Also I would have chosen something different to wear underneath. Overall, I don’t think it deserves the harsh words. Not everyone likes to the cookie-cutter look.

I don’t think she is couture, crafty or crazy; just a bit eccentric. Whatever makes you happy, go for it, with some taste. If what you want is for people to look at you, that’s fine. However, what you wear will make people take notice and not necessarily in a positive way.

Even in an area where there is little or no fashion consciousness, this design is way too far out. Someone said it reminded her of something from a Disney project—-perhaps Beauty and the Beast? And I’m not referring to Beauty. It’s craft gone amok. Having done applique projects on clothing I know the work that went into this was prodigious. Hopefully it can be tamed just a tad for the next design.

there are two things i don’t like – the purse, and the collar on the coat. both easy fixes! trash the ugly purse and cut the collar off the coat (not the lapel, just the collar), which i’d replace with a satin ruffle, probably.
i really, really love the whole look (except the purse, which is just tacky)!

Where to begin? This combination of “things” is tacky, ill-fitting, and nothing goes together. The fabric and lines of the coat are not compatible with the “formal gown” fabric of the dress; the coat is misshapen and looks like it came out of a rag bag. I don’t even begin to understand the purse in combination with everything else. And the flowers/etc? Those kinds of appliques belong more on a quilt or wallhanging. Sigh. What a sad, sad mess.

Wow! This is certainly a lot of purple! Actually for a coat from Goodwill, with felt appliques by Grandma, it could be considered quite creative. I take it she was trying to show people that she still has that certain flair for fashion, but the economic thing just got in the way….so off to Goodwill! Michaels always has those great sales on felt. With a little bit of refurbished sheer living room curtain(for those elegant leaves), Oila! Grandma tacky! Throw in your 5 year old grandaughters stripey purse, and you have a look that people will be talking about for years!
Seriously, with the torso and bottom look shes got going on here, who needs(or can pay attention) her face?

As is, a nightmare. Everything I hate about hand-made, and I’ve got deep respect for hand-made.
But could it be fixed? Maybe. Take away the applique flowers, the blob of fabric in the front, the purse, the long dress underneath, the mismatched buttons. Have just the coat, by itself, with dark chocolate leggings, maybe high boots of the same color, a similar chocolate-toned ribbed turtleneck, clean accessories…. basically a slim silhouette underneath, lengthening the body, and there is something interesting to the bulk and slightly distressed aspect to that coat (the seaming, the scooped hem, the neck opening, the akimbo pocket… OK I might remove that pocket too). It could look cool for knocking around Soho on a Saturday.

I give the lady kudo’s for trying. She obviously has some talent if she fashioned that flower herself. I think the whole look is a bit misguided but it draws the eye. I am not sure the attention is all positive though. Maybe for her it is all about individuality and making a statement.

I’m sorry but this is just ill-fitting and ugly. I’ve seen nicer coats at Goodwill. The coat itself, without the hideous flowers, is cheap and it looks it. This is truly one of those “you can’t make a silk purse from a sow’s ear” type of things. When a piece of clothing wears you instead of your wearing it, don’t buy it or, if you did, throw it away!

I agree with all of the comments shared. At another time and place the coat would be cute with skinny jeans and boots. I like artistic pieces in general, but they need to be worn carefully considering the event and the crowd.

If she had taken the time to properly cut the fabric and sew, matched the buttons correctly and lost the flowers, changed the color to a more flattering one, properly hem, then the outfit would have been crafty. This looks like something I would have done in elementary school.

The fabric has no structure, is wrinkled and an awful color. The cut is bad, the design is off and the sewing itself is terrible, look at how the fabric puckers and doesn’t lie flat. How hard do you have to try to make a too-tight, baggy outfit???

Oh my. I’ve aways felt that princess lines were flattering and I kind of get what she is trying to do in a hippie, recycle sort of way. But maybe for a high school kid, but maybe not. Sorry, just doesn’t make it for me. Perhaps it would have felt more up to date (though still funky) with fabric painting rather than bulky applique.
And the coat just is’t hanging right in the CF. Is that a flipped facing or a badly exicuted godet?
