{Giveaway} Win a Yogaforce yoga mat!

To celebrate the National Bone Health Challenge, FOF Annie Appleby is giving away a yoga mat from her brilliant biz, Yogaforce.

To enter, comment below and answer: Have you ever done a ‘Downward Dog?’

Weight-bearing exercise and movement are recommended antidotes to osteoporosis. Yoga, particularly, can foster strength, agility, balance and can even help prevent falls as we age.

Annie is a yoga-trainer to the stars (Madonna is a client) and a spokeswoman for American Bone Health. After surviving a few bad car accidents, Annie was told by several orthopedic surgeons that she would never run again. She used the A-Line yoga mat to align her body and has since run several marathons. “The mat has put me in the best shape of my life,” says Annie. “I stay in condition the easy way; I am mindful about eating and keeping my body in alignment. It is so simple.”

To enter, comment below and answer: Have you ever done a ‘Downward Dog?’ (See all our past winners, here.)

Contest closes October 28, 2010.

I am 54 years young, and I have never taken yoga, so I am not sure what a downward dog is. I run, bike, and workout with weights. I recently started a pushup challenge with my 15 year old son. He is working on a goal of 100 in a row, so I thought I could go for a goal of 40. I am very unflexible, and I have been thinking of adding yoga to my routine. I would love to win a mat to get me started. Thank you for the chance.

My friends have always marveled at how strong I am. I realize now that it is because of my 20+ years of practicing Yoga. Yes, I have done downward dog. Several years ago, having watched my aunt become increasingly less stable on her feet, I realized that I needed to begin a program to strengthen my balance. I had also been diagnosed with osteoporosis. I wanted a yoga mat and beginner’s dvd for Christmas, but I knew that my family would probably scoff. I bought one as a present for myself and began learning. I am still learning at home and have made the determination to go to yoga class after work at least two days a week. I need an instructor to lead me beyond my beginner status. I am 58 years old, have begun the yoga, have begun a weight campaign, and have been walking (at 5:30 a.m.). My yoga mat is getting somewhat thin, and I would certainly love to try this product.

Of course! Actually I learned it from my dog. Every time they would get up and they stretch. It finally dawned on me that human’s need to stretch their spines and legs also.
I am kidding, of course. But it really does help my posture, and stretch my legs after a working day. It is a trick to keep my weight balanced so I don’t put more weight on my feet instead of my hands, but there is nothing better than this yogi stretch to balance my day.

The first few months I did Downward Dog, my arms shook so bad I thought I was going to fall flat on my face, but as I continued with Yoga, I found new strength coursing through my whole body, even what I thought were my weak shoulders and wrists… I can only believe that I was building strength in my muscles and bones, slowly and in a way that would last me for my whole life. Yoga is a great way to gain flexibility, to obtain tranquility and calmness in your day and to refresh you body for the day ahead or from the day that occurred.

Yes, I love downward dog yoga pose. It feels so good to stretch like that. My greyhound, Isis does it naturally all the time when she gets up from resting. We do it together often and she even knows the word stretch. My family practiced yoga together back in the 50’s…yes, I know, they were ahead of their time but I feel fortunate to have been exposed to their philosophies at that young age because it stuck and I have been doing yoga or stretching or Chi Gong or some kind of movement on and off ever since. Of Course I’ve done Downward Dog! Its a great realaxing pose but I prefer Sleeping Swan as I need those hip openers. I have Ossteopenia & arthritis so the more I move & keep active the better I feel. Been doing yoga for 6 years, and for the past 2 years I’ve gone 3-4 times per week for studio yoga. It is the best think I’ve done for myself, and I see and feel the difference every day.

Every morning, SugarPie rings the bell on the door because she wants to go out to the back yard. After about 5 minutes of bell ringing, I get up from watching my recorded House Wifes of somewhere and unlatch the sliding door. She does a perfect downward dog and I open the door. Now, maybe if I had a yoga mat, I would do a downward dog myself. I would even let SugarPie use my mat. She might do a cobra. We both could use it for Shavasana. Oh ya, SugarPie is my 3 year old English Bulldog. Very stiff. No flexibility. A little overweight. A couch potato. Just like me.

Of course! I do a downward dog every day, twice a day if I can. Initially, it was awkward, but having perfected the way it is supposed to feel and settling into it, it takes all the stress off the parts of my body that take the worst beating: my back, my shoulders, and my calves.
Sitting at a computer or bending over a work table can really put some kinks in your muscles. A good does of DD will ease all that away! * and is sure helps that nagging pinched nerve in my shoulderblade*
    And you can breathe………………………………
