Jill Fisher
Microdry Products

FOF Jill Fisher was the creative director at a brand development agency when she first came across the fabric that would become, Microdry. Her agency’s founder and CEO, Iain Scorgie, returned from China; after eighteen months developing towel-like material, which they would eventually patent; as it felt like velvet and was super absorbent.  Jill saw the potential: “Before then, towels were either soft or absorbent,” she remembers. She and her team named it Microdry, and used it to create a line of consumer products, starting with baby bathrobes in 2005. They were a hit. Today, the company manufactures adult robes, hair towels, bath pillows and their best-selling item to date…the Microdry memory foam bath mat.

Win: A trio of Jill’s super-soft, quick-dry Microdry bath products: a luxury hair turban, memory foam bath pillow and memory foam bath mat.

Melanie Mayron
Mayron’s Goods

Twelve years ago, expectant mom and former thirtysomething actress Melanie Mayron was having difficulty finding chemical-free baby products. “No one was talkin’ ‘natural’ then,” says Melanie. She’s since spent over a decade developing her all-natural baby skincare line, Mayron’s Goods, with the help of her Dad, a pharmaceutical chemist, and her actress friends, who tested the products on their own children!  Our Best Barrier and Diaper Cream, was Melanie’s first bestseller… Newly launched are a body oil, body milk, chapped cheek and lip protector and more. “You don’t have to be a baby to use it. After all, we’re all somebody’s baby,” says Melanie. Read Melanie’s full story, here.

Win: A gift set of beauty products from Melanie’s all-natural skincare line, Mayron’s Goods

Bonnie Steen
Roots Only

FOF Bonnie Steen spent years dying her hair at home to save money and time. Then a hairstylist friend told her she was seriously damaging her hair by repeatedly dying the whole shaft instead of just the roots. So she came up with an idea . . .

“I was combing out my tangles with a hair pick and suddenly thought ‘If this were hollow, you could attach a bottle of hair color to the handle and squeeze it out through the teeth,” says Bonnie. “You’d be able to comb and apply color to just the roots in one action.” Her husband Claude created the first prototype for the hair-color applicator comb in 1994. Now, Bonnie’s brainchild, Roots Only, is sold in over 4,000 Wal-Mart stores coast to coast. Read, Bonnie’s full (amazing) story, here.

Win: Roots Only, Bonnie’s hair color applicator comb.

{Beauty} Ask the Beauty Inventor: Clark Wolfsberger, creator of Beauty Sleep

When we sent BeautySleep to our FOF Beauty Testers, we had no idea if it would work. A beverage that promised to help you sleep better and improve your skin seemed a bit too good to be true. So we were shocked by the unanimously positive reviews. Intrigued, we called Clark Wolfsberger, President of BigQuark, the Missouri-based beverage company that manufactures the supplement to find out exactly how this powerful little potion works.

How did you come up with BeautySleep?

The three issues boomers are most concerned with are sleep, aging and beauty. We wanted to come up with something that addresses those concerns.

Why is sleep so important?
When you sleep, your body repairs and replenishes itself. Some studies show that if your body doesn’t get enough sleep, it produces more cortisol, a hormone that causes you to age faster and gain weight.

Why is sleeping more difficult as we age?
There are many reasons, but one is that, you don’t produce as much melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep.

How does BeautySleep aid sleep?
It contains melatonin to help set your sleep cycle on course. It also includes chamomile, valerian root, and gava which relax the body and brain.

How does BeautySleep fight aging?
It has antioxidants that protects skin cells. It also includes sensara, a clinically-proven anti-aging ingredient which improves skin hydration, elasticity and lipid content. Lycopene, another ingredient in BeautySleep, is anti-inflammatory. Eliminating inflammation preserves more cell life and there’s less damage to the body. Last, it contains vitamin B, which aids circulation and in turn nourishes the skin and pushes toxins out of your system.

Do you use BeautySleep?
Yes. Typically on a Sunday night, if my sleep pattern has been thrown off over the weekend.  I’ll drink it to get everything back on track.

Beauty Sleep costs $21.90 for six bottles and is available at Soft Surroundings.com

Thank you for entering. This contest is now closed.

As a little girl, FOF Liz Glasgow loved art and crafts, much to the delight of her mother Hilda, a top New York fashion illustrator.

“We had a workroom with a metal closet that housed all the drawings, papers, art supplies and cameras,” says Liz. “Whenever I needed something art related, Mom would tell me it was in the white cabinet.”

Now, 50 years later, Liz has made her name as a freelance photographer for leading architects, interior designers and top publications such as Elle Decor and Woman’s Day. The white cabinet from her childhood has lived on, although her mother, Hilda, passed away in 2004 at the age of 91.

Today, the white cabinet resides in Liz’s Hamptons home and houses 80 drawings spanning Hilda’s career as an illustrator for Vogue, Saks Fifth Avenue and Best & Co.

“I’ve had her drawings hidden away and am now offering them to the world,” says Liz. Just last year, she launched a virtual White Cabinet where customers can order custom, printed Gicleé reproductions that mimic the look and feel of the originals. Currently there are 50 illustrations available on the site ranging from the 1940s-1970s, and Liz plans to release the rest in the near future. Later this year, the prints will be sold as wallpaper by Flavor Paper

“These drawings have lived in that cabinet for 60 years or so,” says Liz. “I  found it only fitting for them to reside there virtually online as well.”

{Business} Meet FOF Lauri Ward, founder of Use What You Have Interiors

In 1981, FOF Lauri Ward decided she wasn’t happy working in “conventional interior designer mode.”

“I didn’t feel comfortable telling my clients they had to buy expensive things to make their homes look beautiful,” says Lauri. She started her company, Use What You Have® and developed her own system of decorating, to help clients use what they already have in their home to create a fresher, updated and more elegant look for a starting flat fee of just $350 per room.

Over the past three decades, she’s trained hundreds of decorators and has formed a worldwide network called the Interior Redecorators Network®.

“Anybody should be able to have a beautiful home, not just wealthy people,” says Lauri.

The concept is simple but the instant gratification that a one-day room makeover delivers is what Lauri says has garnered major media attention (including Oprah, The Today Show, The New York Times and House Beautiful Magazine) and kept her company thriving for three decades.

“The comment we hear from everyone is ‘Gee, I never would have thought of that. I’ve tried this 10 different ways and none of it worked,” says Lauri. “We show them the 11th way.”

To enter to win the Reinvent Your Room makeover with a Use What You Have® decorator plus a $250 gift card to IKEA: The Life Improvement Store, click here.

{Giveaway} A Wrinkle-Preventing Beauty Pillow

Pamela Governale and her FOF mom, Angela, are giving away their brilliant invention, the Vanity Pillow.

To enter, tell us in the comments below: Do you sleep on your face, side or back?
Thank you for commenting this contest is now closed.

Convinced that a lifetime of sleeping facedown was causing facial wrinkles, Pamela Governale set to work designing a pillow that would help her sleep comfortably face-up.  Her FOF mom, Angela, sewed the first Vanity Pillow prototype.

“We protect our skin from the sun; we moisturize; we use anti-wrinkle creams and under-eye serums; and then we spend all night squashing our faces into a pillow,” says Pamela. Her Vanity Pillow works by ensuring the user sleeps face-up which relieves pressure on existing wrinkles on cheeks, under the eyes and forehead. It also ensures a smudge-free slumber for women who like to slather on night creams.

“It’s relaxing to snooze on your tummy, but to avoid wrinkles, flip over…. A vanity pillow cradles your head, preventing tossing and turning,” wrote InStyle editors in a recent glowing review.
