{What Do You Think Of This Look?}

We spotted this FOF handbag designer, at a recent accessories show (really, how could we miss her?). We’re still undecided on her tie-dye pants, but one thing we’re sure about: it takes guts at any age to sport them! What do you think? Is her outfit tie dye for?

—————————————————————————————————

Sandra Soich: “Chic! The FOF’s overall look is a class act. Her hair is sleek and clean, jewelry is great and I love the top. The pants are “out there” but good…and I love the shoes. I think the look is very current…a la 7th Ave!”

Sandra Soich is wardrobe stylist to the stars and founder of YourFashionTherapist.com.

.

Susan Hersh: “Printed pants are a huge trend this season but tucked into her funky shoes, these tie-dye pants almost look like pajamas. Her black shirt looks very heavy–the weight of the fabric looks might be more appropriate for fall.”

Susan Hersh is a Ford model and the host and executive producer of Meet The Experts.

.

Sherrie Mathieson: “I love the low-key top paired with the colorful eye-catching pant. The top and bottom are in perfect balance, and more importantly–they flatter her. I also love her tailored, modern Hermes ‘Collier de Chien’ bracelet as well as the other ethnic-inspired jewelry. I would have maybe chosen between the two different styles. The high-heeled booties give her the long-legged look she needs to carry off the voluminous print pant–perfect! Even her painted toenails pick up one of the blue shades in her pant. She’s youthful, appropriate, and creative–kudos!”

Sherrie Mathieson is a leading style expert and Random House author of Steal this Style and Forever Cool.

.

Lovey Dash: “I love her Hermes wrist band, pant, open-toed bootie and short, black top–great proportions and great colors. Her hair tied back is so nice, neat and right with this look. This is the best “What Do You Think of This Look” I have seen yet!”

Lovey Dash is a Beverly Hills-based stylist. She was formerly in VIP sales for Louis Vuitton on Rodeo Drive.

.

Terry Gibralter: “I really don’t hate her look but that said, I don’t love it either. Overall, it’s coming off a bit sloppy. I don’t like the proportions of the short-ish classic blouse with shirttail out over the pants and I really don’t like how the soft unfitted pants pool at the ankles of her boots. The boots are quite cool however, but they would be better with structured, form-fitting pants. That being said, she’s in great shape and could probably pull off the wild pants just paired with something more fitting like sandals or tennis shoes and a slightly longer, more casual top.”

Terry Gibralter is the Sr. Vice President and Creative Director at Grey advertising as well as a fashion stylist and the creator of these clever work accessories.

{What Do You Think Of This Look} Matching Mom and Daughter

“Like mother, like daughter,” never rang truer. We spotted these tourists from Europe outside of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Both are sporting the same look–oversized scarves, teeny cross-body bags, tailored blazers and standout sneakers. What do you think? Is this the mother (and daughter) of all outfits or mother-daughter disaster?

—————————————————————————————————

Sherrie Mathieson: Sorry to say, mom’s attempt to mimic her daughter is only accentuating her personal style ineptitude. The daughter’s scarf is overwhelming–she tried for hip and missed the mark, but it’s forgivable at her age. As for mom, she takes it to a totally heightened silly and inappropriate level. They would both truly would benefit from my book “Steal This Style: Moms and Daughters Swap Wardrobe Secrets.”

Sherrie Mathieson is a leading style expert and Random House author of Steal this Style and Forever Cool.

.

Terry Gibralter: What’s not to love?  This stylish, adorable mother-daughter duo look great! I love how they’re wearing the exact same items (boy blazers, fitted jeans/jodhpurs, cross-body bags, high-tops and long scarves) but the colors and cuts are totally their own. Mom is incredibly youthful so she can really pull this look off. The daughter looks like she’s learned at mom’s knee.  Very cool!

Terry Gibralter is the Sr. Vice President and Creative Director at Grey advertising as well as a fashion stylist and the creator of these clever work accessories.

.

Glenyse Thompson: “You have to wonder–did the daughter dress her mom? The daughter looks as she should, like a teenager. Mom could have easily made this outfit a ‘do’ by switching into fitted pants or leggings, and adding a pretty flat.”

Glenyse Thompson is a personal home and wardrobe stylist and the creator of Styleosophy.

.

Susan Hersh: “Mom had fun sporting jodhpurs, a long-sleeved pink tee, piped jacket and a leopard print scarf–quite the unexpected look! However, the custom Nike sneakers are a miss. Sneakers for touring are acceptable, but she should have opted for a cleaner cut such as Converse ‘Jack Purcell.’ The daughter has nice flair at such a young age. The scarf is a bit oversized for her tiny frame but…does it really matter?”

Susan Hersh is a Ford model and the host and executive producer of Meet The Experts.

.

.
Sandra Soich: “They look great! It’s interesting that the difference in style between generations is minimal. They’re both casual chic with a European flavor. I just think they should have swapped shoes!”

Sandra Soich is wardrobe stylist to the stars and founder of YourFashionTherapist.com.

.

Lovey Dash: Love this look! They brighten up what looks to be a dreary day up with their outfits. Love the custom Nikes, Louis Vuitton leopard scarf and trendy snake bag on Mom. Everything just works. The daughter is right on as well. Her yellow sneakers are adorable. A dynamic duo!

Lovey Dash is a Beverly Hills-based stylist. She was formerly in VIP sales for Louis Vuitton on Rodeo Drive.

.

Jojami and Deborah: “This Mom must have had the song ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’ stuck in her head when she purchased these crazy tennis shoes. While we are all for having something creative in your wardrobe these just look like she is trying too hard to keep up with her little fashion plate of a daughter. While this FOF is certainly youthful-looking, if her daughter wasn’t standing next to her, you would think, ‘why did she put those shoes with that outfit?’”

{What do you think of this look?} Seventies chic…or stuck in a time warp?

Spotted at Fashion Week….When this FOF got dressed she was clearly thinking 70s glam–with her shaggy vest, round shades and wide-legged trousers. But, did she ace this retro redux or should we send her back to Studio 54?

—————————————————————————————————

Sherrie Mathieson: “It takes a very pretty, well-proportioned, slim woman to pull off this demanding look–the bulk, the color, the high waist. She succeeds. I love the snakeskin accessory choices and 70s inspired necklace.”

Sherrie Mathieson is a leading style expert and Random House author of Steal this Style and Forever Cool.

Lovey Dash: “She is not stuck in a time warp, she’s stuck in fashionista land. She has the whole thing going, from snake accessories to winter white, big glasses, a ratty fur vest and the high-waisted pant which made a comeback this year. I would have preferred a more simple top, perhaps a tonal cashmere tee from Kors, but hey, what do I know?”

Lovey Dash is a Beverly Hills-based stylist. She was formerly in VIP sales for Louis Vuitton on Rodeo Drive.

Glenyse Thompson: “Love everything! This is what monochromatic magic looks like. Her Mongolian vest is warm and luxurious–great for running to and from New York Fashion Week shows. The snakeskin clutch, textured shoes and statement necklace bring warmth to her neutral palette. Best of all, she looks confident, comfortable and chic.”

Glenyse Thompson is a personal home and wardrobe stylist and the creator of Styleosophy.

Susan Hersh: “Her fur vest is very chic this season, but the monochromatic look is very old. The shirt tucked into the trouser is not flattering for her figure–it makes her appear wide in the hip area. I would swap it for a slim trouser and untuck the shirt in a more fluid way. The sandal should be updated to a bootie. However, the python clutch is fashionable and the necklace makes a strong statement with the vest.”

Susan Hersh is a Ford model and the host and executive producer of Meet The Experts.

Sandra Soich: “This woman is definitely in a time warp. However, the blouse looks great, as well as her necklace. The glasses and bag work well with the other elements. And, of course, the hair is perfectly ‘70s. Not only is she in a time warp but she’s also in a city warp…I could swear she was in LA!”

Sandra Soich is wardrobe stylist to the stars and founder of YourFashionTherapist.com.

{What do you think of this look?}

Jojami Tyler and Deborah Boland, of the brilliant fashion blog, Fabulous After 40, tipped us off that this FOF we spotted at NYC Fashion Week was actually a fashion blogger by the name of Susan Tabak. She has 7,000+ Twitter followersher own perfume line and has been named “a sort of perennial presence in fashion,” by The New York Times. She must be doing something right…right? See what our style experts have to say, then you tell us…Is her Fashion Week look haute or does it leave you cold?

—————————————————————————————————

Lovey Dash: “Can the fashion police please arrest this woman? The earrings are too much with everything else. The shoes must go immediately. The bag is too bulky for this outfit–a sleeker bag would’ve been a better choice. Now, for the main event–the coat (if that’s even what we can call it) whoever slashed it up had the right idea. If she really must wear it, she should tone everything else down, perhaps by wearing a jumpsuit or monotone stockings, dress and a high boot.”

Lovey Dash is a Beverly Hills-based stylist. She was formerly in VIP sales for Louis Vuitton on Rodeo Drive.

Susan Hersh: “I can appreciate avant-garde fashion and I like women who take a chance by wearing something that sets them apart. However, this cardigan-coat is leaving me very cold. It’s highly impractical for February in NYC, but more importantly, it just looks strange–the coiled rope appears unfinished. I am fine with everything else. Love her shoes!”

Susan Hersh is a Ford model and the host and executive producer of Meet The Experts.

Sandra Soich: I ‘get’ it. Her look is so different than what we’re used to seeing. The only thing that really bothered me was the two-tone colors of the shoe. Otherwise it’s a very special look…refreshing.

Sandra Soich is wardrobe stylist to the stars and founder of YourFashionTherapist.com.

The Glam Gals: Fashion blogger Susan Tabak is known for supporting and wearing up-and-coming fashion designers, which is what Fashion Week is all about. Even though her look is a little bit shocking, Susan sure hit the mark!
While we would never invest in a crazy coat like this, she pulled it off! She looks elegant in this color palette of taupe and black with the simple black scarf and handbag allowing the coat to be the star. Her funky shoes pull the entire look together. Kudos to Susan for rocking this look!

“Glam Gals” Jojami Tyler and Deborah Boland co-write the brilliant fashion blog, Fabulous After 40.

Terry Gibralter: “I think she’s rocking it! Love the amazing rope concept coat. The black and taupe color scheme is sophisticated, and her accessories work well. Also love the ‘of the moment’ leather clutch. Her shoes are super stylish although a bit painful looking. I even like the the hoops and the heavy link bracelet. Her big hair and sunglasses top the look off perfectly. She’s a very cool looking lady!

Terry Gibralter is the Sr. Vice President and Creative Director at Grey advertising as well as a fashion stylist and the creator of these clever work accessories.

Sherrie Mathieson: “This coat is probably ‘art’ to this woman but reminds me of a poodle and looks cumbersome to wear. The layered neutral palette is good, and her great legs are shown off by the high heels and short garment beneath the coat. However, there is not one item in this fussy ensemble that I would want to own.”

Sherrie Mathieson is a leading style expert and Random House author of Steal this Style and Forever Cool.

Glenyse Thompson: “That coat is wearing her, and that’s all I can say….”

{Style Expert} How would you fix this look?

When it comes to Fashion Week Street Style–some FOFs nail it, and others miss entirely. Then there are the FOFew that fall somewhere in between, like this woman, who wore a masculine tweed suit to the Ralph Lauren show. Her intentions were right, but the the end result was more fox hunt than foxy. Let’s not FOFashion-bash her–let’s help her fix her look. We brought in two experts, Jojami Tyler and Deborah Boland “The Glam Gals” behind brilliant style blog, Fabulous After 40.

—————————————————————————————————

Deb: Whoa, Wouldn’t want to mess with this lady!

Jojami: She looks like Annie Hall meets the Sopranos–very masculine.

Both: A touch of femininity would work wonders. We say ditch the white shirt and tie for a soft silk blouse with a loose bow. Oh, and get some Spanx to smooth out that tummy.

Zara Blouse With Bow Collar, $79.90; Spanx Simplicity High Waist Panty, $52

FOFs, do you agree? How would you fix her look?

{The Look for Less} Steal This FOFashion Week Style

—————————————————————————————————

Maybe they should rename it FOFashion week…

New York City’s Fashion Week is dominated not by FUF models, but by the FOFashion forward, from Franca Sozzani, editor in chief of Vogue Italia, to jewelry designer, Efva Attling, Sweden’s queen of bling. It’s also our FOFavorite place to scope out style worth stealing. Check out these 3 street styles from Fashion Week and then, get them for less.

—————————————————————————————————

Patterned Tights
Once reserved for leggy waifs, patterned tights have made a comeback on more shapely sisters…namely, shapely FOF sisters. Trust us, ladies, the fashion future is hosey. “We may have varicose veins, sun spots or cellulite,” says Hallie Peterson, owner of Leg Luxury tights. “so, when we cover our legs with patterns, it looks a lot better than going bare or even wearing regular nude hose.” Glenyse G. Thompson of styleosophy.com agrees. “They add unexpected texture and/or color to your outfit.”

Get the look: Leg Luxury tights, $22 from the FabOverFifty shop

Itty Bitty Bags
We’re all grown up, but our bags are shrinking?! We’re talking about itsy-bitsy, teeny-weeny,  honey-I-shrunk-the handbags. “Fashion is having an Alice in Wonderland moment, with exaggerated proportions flinging outfits into thrilling disarray,” according to the fashion website and store, Asos.com. If your own body proportions give you agita, there’s nothing like a dinky dollhouse-sized bag to throw them for a loop!

Get the look: Mini Metallic Quilted Cross Body Bag, $21.49 from Asos.com

—————————————————————————————————

A Fur Collar
When the weather outside is frightful, there’s nothing more delightful than a fur collar–preferably detachable–to give it more va-voom! As the weather warms, you can remove it and keep your statement coat working a bit longer. “[A fur collar is] a cool addition to a fitted sweater, a sheath dress or a narrow coat.” says FOF Style Guru Terry Gibralter. “ Well said, Terry… and well worn, Fashion Week FOFs.

{What do you think of this look?} Grammy’s Edition

Grammy fashion is all about looking over-the-top, sexy, and cool. There are no bonus points for style that’s “distinguished” and “appropriate” as there are at the Oscars. But were FOFs able to push the envelope without looking ridiculous?

Well, we think there were high notes . . . and some FOFashion flats.
But what do you think of these looks?

—————————————————————————————————

Cyndi Lauper

FOF Cyndi, 58, took the plunge in a cleavage-revealing Jean Paul Gaultier blazer and a gown that showed her glowing white gams, right up to the thigh. All we can say is, girl just wants to have fun. Over the top? Check. Sexy? Check. Cool? Doublecheck. One sour note: The teased black hair extensions, which just look crazy.

Diane Warren

Diane, 56, is the brilliant FOF songwriter behind everyone else’s hits (Aerosmith, Celine Dion, Beyonce . . . .) This year, she was nominated for “Born to Be Somebody,” a song she wrote for Justin Bieber. Unfortunately, she may have also used Justin’s stylist. Her jeans and shoes look straight out of his closet. The jacket has some promise, but seems to be concealing a totally incongruous green ice skating skirt. Sorry, this is an FOFail.

Kathy Griffin

“Best Comedy Album” nominee Kathy Griffin, 52, used to be the “gawky” funny one. But since becoming FOF, she’s publicly taken great pains to also be “sexy-pretty” funny one. Frankly, with this Michael Kors dress, she’s achieved her goal. It may be a little “beauty pageant” for the Grammy’s, but Kathy looks damn good! Extra points for fab hair and accessories.

Bonnie Raitt

FOF Bonnie Raitt’s moving tribute to Etta James was one of the highlights of the show. On the style side, no one rocks white streaks better than Bonnie, and this copper color looks great on her. BUT, the un-tucked blouse, nondescript black pants and orthopedic shoes give us nothin’ to talk about. Come on, Bonnie, you’re rich–you can do better.

Ain’t no mountain high enough to keep us away from this suit worn by FOF Valerie Simpson, 56, of Ashford and Simpson. The pattern is all kinds of wrong, and it still doesn’t manage to distract attention from Valerie’s straggly updo and cheesy shoes and bag.

Linda Ramone

FOF Linda Ramone famously caused a lifelong rift between Joey Ramone (whom she dated) and Johnny Ramone (whom she eventually married). Last night, she caused a fashion rift among our editors, who couldn’t quite decide if she looks incredibly cool or incredibly mismatched. Overall, you can’t deny she looks sexy and sultry–that hair is fierce! Do the boots and the dress and the necklace “go” together? Is that even what the Grammy’s is about?

{What do you think of this look?} Screen Actor’s Guild Fashion

Two weeks ago, we featured our FOFashion picks and pans from the Golden Globes. These actresses take our fashion critiques very seriously (ahem), so clearly they wanted to impress and improve at this weekend’s SAG awards. What do you think: Were their fashion choices fab, or should we wish them better luck at the Oscars?

—————————————————————————————————

Glenn Close:

Bravo, Glenn! Despite its rococo ruffle at the bottom, Glenn’s Zac Posen dress was a major upgrade from her fairly forgettable and unflattering showing at the Golden Globes. Her figure looks fab, her arms are artfully concealed, and her hair and makeup are fresh and flawless. Love it! (But what do you think . . . )

Diane Lane:

If we hadn’t seen her last dress, Diane would have received higher marks for this perfectly lovely David Meister gown. But we did see her last dress, and it knocked this one out of the water. She looks just fine, but slightly more pedestrian–or should we say, ready for the prom. Perhaps she’s saving the showstopper for Oscar.

Meryl Streep:

Oy. Okay, based on this and the last dress, we think Meryl has two goals: to look cool and to be comfortable. Last week she fell slightly short due to the fit of her dress. This week, she’s in the ballpark, but it’s still not quite coming together. Her Vivienne Westwood gown looks too big and the belt appears plucked from another outfit. That said, the color is perfect on her, and she does seem to be reaching her own fashion goals–even if they’re not ours.

Mary Tyler Moore:

Mary Tyler Moore received the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award, and frankly, she looked great. Her face may have suffered a bit too much nip and tuck over the years, but you can’t say the same for this suit, which is perfectly tailored, flattering and chic. Love the layered jewelry and the open collar. Not to mention her partner on stage: How great does Dick van Dyke look?!

Winner for best best actress in a TV drama, Jessica Lange also wins our vote of approval for this sparkling chocolate gown. Her hair looked great, her body looked strong. Tilda Swinton:

Nominated once again for her work in We Need to Talk About Kevin, Tilda wore an off-white Lanvin gown. Tilda, we need to talk about this dress: You looked A-MAZING at the Globes–fierce and fab, per usual. Here, you look mildly depressed and strangely wide in the middle due to heavy pleating at the waist. We’ll see you at the Oscars . . . you better bring it!

{Style Expert} What do you think of this look?

We spotted this belted beauty outside of Barneys in NYC. We loved the kimono-style coat, but is her style everyone’s cup of tea? Read what our style experts think, and then tell us: What do you think of her look?

Glenyse Thompson: “I love it–this FOF has it going on. All the elements in her outfit balance together perfectly; from the chunky turtleneck and statement necklace to the belted coat. The colors compliment her skin tone too. She looks chic, comfortable and fabulous. I personally would like to know where she got that coat, and If I were her friend I would be trying to borrow that necklace!”

Glenyse Thompson is a personal home and wardrobe stylist and the creator of Styleosophy.

.

Sherrie Mathieson: “This refined-looking lady understands quality and style. Every item she is wearing says ‘well made’, and ‘high-end’–the best cashmere and leather. I love her sporty, ageless, flat boots and how she tucked her pants into them without excessive bulk. (Leggings would have been too “young”). However, the lovely necklace doesn’t integrate and the look would be sleeker without it. Sunglasses that were neutral without those purple lenses, would be better.”

Sherrie Mathieson is a leading style expert and Random House author of Steal this Style and Forever Cool.

.

Sandra Soich: “This woman definitely has style, but too much happening in one outfit. The pieces are all beautiful on their own, but not mixed together.  The big problem is the riding boots. They are great–but not with the ensemble. Another issue…is this outfit age appropriate?  Tending to think not. She’s definitely trying too hard.”

Sandra Soich is wardrobe stylist to the stars and founder of YourFashionTherapist.com.

.

Terry Gibralter: “There’s a lot I like about this look and some things I don’t. The belted wrap coat is great and given her trim figure, she wears it well. I like the leather tie belt and the sweater underneath.  As much as I like the necklace, I don’t feel it works as a coat accessory and it feels at odds with the tailored ensemble.  I also don’t like what looks to be pants tucked into her boots, it feels a little heavy and awkward and I would prefer a sleeker look on the bottom–narrow wool pants with a brogue shoe or slim fitting boots on a slightly higher heel. I do love her chic bob and cool sunglasses!”

Terry Gibralter is the Sr. Vice President and Creative Director at Grey advertising as well as a fashion stylist and the creator of these clever work accessories.

.

Lovey Dash: “I love this look–tres chic! Love the belted coat layered over her cozy, contrasting turtleneck sweater. The boots are great, but I think I see baggy denim jeans peeping out. That is a no no. Thank goodness it’s mostly covered.”

Lovey Dash is a Beverly Hills-based stylist. She was formerly in VIP sales for Louis Vuitton on Rodeo Drive.

.

Susan Hersh: “When I first saw this woman, ‘chic and luxurious’ came to mind. The short-sleeve cape is an exquisite outwear piece and layers beautifully over the chunky turtleneck. The black riding boots polish off the look and the necklace is an artistic statement. This lady has great style and is an influence for all ages.”

Susan Hersh is a Ford model and the host and executive producer of Meet The Experts.

[Style Expert] How to wear a scarf–and not look old.

Stylish women wear scarves. Right? But how come when we try to wear them, we end up looking either uber conservative or, well . . . dated?

According to style blogger and scarf aficionado, Une Femme, (yes, that is a nom de plume), there are two big mistakes when it comes to wearing a scarf:
1.  Trying to make it look “neat.”
2.  Lack of practice.

“Wearing scarves is a learned thing,” she explains. “If you want to have that French, effortless chic, it has to look sort of thrown on–but it’s really not. You have to play in front of the mirror–twist, fold. Get that muscle memory going.”

Une Femme began experimenting with scarves about 5 years ago, after she returned from her very first trip to Paris. “French women have a basic wardrobe and they accessorize it. I started looking up other women online who were doing scarf tutorials. Now I wear a scarf every day unless it’s just too warm.”

We love the way she uses scarves in her own wardrobe–chic and simple. Now it’s time to T.I.Y (tie it yourself).  Check out Une Femme’s 3 simple scarf tutorials and then haul that stack of scarves out of your closet and get twisting.
