Katy and Michelle of Twig Terrariums are giving away this fancy magnifying glass. They use it to create their own miniature moss worlds, but you can keep it in your purse and use it on that oh-so-pesky, tiny type. Enter to win by answering in the comments below: Do you ever use a magnifying glass when you read?
Cool company alert! Terrariums are making a comeback, but we’re not talking those dreadful aquarium-style science projects. Instead, two Brooklyn, N.Y. FUFs have built their business building miniature worlds inside vintage apothecary jars. Here we chat with Katy and Michelle of Twig Terrariums. Plus, their terrariums are now for sale in the FOF Shop!
Is this a full-time gig for you guys?
Oh yes, for both of us.
What are your backgrounds?
Katy: We both were Brooklyn College students; Michelle was there for design and photography and I was there for creative writing.
How did you two meet?
Michelle: We’ve known each other since I was 15 and Katy was 12. We lost touch in our teen years when Katy moved away. We met up at my 31st birthday party. A friend brought her as a surprise guest. The friendship was rekindled, and we liked to get crafty together ever since.
When did you start getting interested in terrariums?
Michelle: I spoke with my college chemistry/biology teacher on how to make a terrarium, and we started experimenting with different vintage jars. They looked like little gardens, and we added people to them. Before we knew it they were all over our apartments. So we had a choice: Sell them or give them to our friends for Christmas.
So you started selling them! Fabulous. When was this?
Michelle: About 3 years ago.
Do you teach others how to make terrariums?
Katy: We have regular workshops all the time at our studio in Brooklyn and around town. We also do private workshops with people who want to work one-on-one with us.
How do you take care of a terrarium?
Katy: They’re moss terrariums so it’s very simple. You mist them with water every 2-4 weeks and keep them out of direct sunlight.
Very low maintenance!
Katy: That’s our goal. We are busy urban dwellers without access to acreage, so our terrariums are our backyards.
What’s your favorite scene you’ve seen someone make or made yourself?
Katy: In a workshop one woman did a medieval scene–with a knight slaying a dragon. That was cool. We have so much fun making custom pieces, like a skydiving couple we did recently. We also did wedding centerpieces and each terrarium represented a different memory in the couple’s life–from one with them having dinner by a lake, to one with them riding on mopeds.
Your business was recently featured by the New York Times. Why the sudden interest in terrariums again?
Katy: They’re so low maintenance, and we’re all so busy. You don’t have to hoe and rake and prune, and you have a petite little garden that you can potentially put your family in. Or enjoy your grandchildren in your little green world. There is a very peaceful aspect to them–yet they add a nice bit of life to any home.

If I had a magnifying glass as beautiful as this one, which can be easily stored in any handbag, I’d never be embarassed to pull it out for any reason. I would probably be the center of attention because everyone would want to know where they could purchase one. Practical and beautiful. It doesn’t get any better than that! Thank you for another terrific giveaway! Good Luck To All!

Yes, I frequently use a magnifying glass (which isn’t glass) with my cheaters. The print these days gets so small from laser printers that it’s impossible to read. I have small batteries in my ‘zapper’ and had to use a magnifying glass to find the voltage when they recently needed replacing. Absurd!!

This is a beautiful key magnifier. So suitable to wear.
hugochou says:
This magnifier would be perfect to use to thread
needle and help read very fine print. I had cataract
surgery in left eye and wear contacts now. But
to read small print, I have to wear reading glasses.
Even with contacts and the reading glasses, I
have trouble threading the needle thru the small
hole. Writing on coupons and things are getting
so much smaller now, that have to bring out my
magnifer every time. But with this nice one, I’d
be able to leave out since it could be used as
decoration.

Hotforfifty says:
Absolutely! If the print is too small for me to see with my contacts AND readers.
Marcia says:
Wow that’s some magnifier! and 100X? You could pick a zit off a nit with that! Oh, yes I use magnifiers at work. They reduce large mechanical drawings down to all fit on 11 x 17 paper and you are supposed to read the print after reducing it at least 4x. It’s insane. They call it progress.

Yes, I use a magnifying glass when reading specific things, like footnotes and endnotes, that, for whatever reason, are always printed in smaller type than the regular print. I also use a magnifying glass when reading instructions on how to cook food that comes in boxes and bags. My kids love mac and cheese, and one kind has the instructions written in such small writing that I can’t even read it with a magnifying glass!! Good thing I’ve got kids!

I use reading glasses, but need the magnifier for very small print.
lorraine says:
I have used a magnifying glass with my reading glasses! That should tell you how bad my eyes are!
Nancy D. Solomon says:
My nick name around here is “Woman Who Runs With Tweezers.” My tweezers’ best friend? That’s right: my magnifying glass. And what a couple they make!
Without my trusty magnifier, I’m prone to accidentally remove large chunks of skin instead of those ornery little culprits. Then, instead of people pretending not to stare at a long wiry white one, they’re avoiding looking at a nasty little crater on my face. Ugh!
I also use a magnifying glass to read the directions on medication bottles, contracts, my children’s school trip forms, the obituaries (okay, so I don’t often read them, but when I do….), dropped knitting stitches, and the back of cake boxes. The list goes on.
Actually, now that I think about it, maybe I should add “Woman Who Runs With Magnifying Glass” to my moniker.

i do use a magnifying glass when I need it in addition to the glasses that are always around my neck. I especially need a magnifier when reading the fine print on products, expiration dates on coupons and when there’s not enough light. My eyes have definitely gotten worse over the past couple of years and it would be great to have a really pretty magnifying glass at my fingertips! thanks for the chance!

LindyBelle says:
I was waiting for my husband in his dentist’s office yesterday and brought a book of crossword puzzles to work on while I waited. I did not have reading glasses with me and had quite a difficult time bringing the clues into focus. I spent more time watching the antics of the fish in their aquarium than reading or working crossword puzzles. A chic and beautiful magnifier such as this one would fit into my purse easily and solve this dilemma. I would use it for reading labels while shopping also. It would be a perfect addition to my purse as it is beautiful, useful, and would soon become meaningful as well.
Catherine says:
When my arms got too short for me to read the TV Guide and my medication labels, I invested in a pair of readers! A whole new world opened up for me and I was able to see clearly. I also have a pair of reading glasses, but I prefer the strength of the readers — especially for menus in darkened restaurants. This is so pretty and feminine, I might wear it on a chain as jewelry when I’m not using it to read!
Ellen says:
Yes I do.
Marynell says:
I keep one in my purse that also has a tiny light in it. It’s great for reading the menu in a dark restaurant.
