I had a friend who I thought was my biggest confidante. Turns out her definition of friendship was, “My enemies are your enemies, but your enemies are still my friends.” She liked to play both sides. My definition of a true friend is “Right or wrong I stand by you.”

My “true” friend was incredible as she used me to help her bag my former husband (I was happy for them). After the engagement, I was history, and all she did was gossip and malign me…even to my own kids! I never did betray her confidences, and they weren’t pretty.

I finally dumped a “friend” after 30+ years. 6 of the 8 on the list were things she did constantly. I’d also add 1) She frequently tells you how tired or bad you look and 2) She brings up a flaw in your accomplishment/outfit/etc in front of others immediately after someone has complimented you. I don’t know why it took me so long to get her out of my life.
