{Style Scout} The very BEST t-shirts for FOFs

Remember those days?  When a worn-in, fitted T (yes, even sans bra) was your sexiest asset? Well, for most of us, those days lasted for about 30 seconds. The rest of our lives are spent looking for t-shirts that are long enough, short enough, fitted–but not too fitted, thin–but not too thin, work-appropriate, soft but sturdy . . . you know what I mean. Well, relax, because this week, we did the work for you.  Our brilliant style scouts picked the best t-shirts just for FOFs–at every price point.

Plus, enter to win the fab scoopneck shirt from Fabrizio Gianni, below, in the color of your choice, when you answer this question in the comments below:  Do you have a favorite t-shirt?

—————————————————————————————————

Lilla P

.

FOF Style Scout Linda Cohen:
Lilla P is a company devoted to creating ‘the essential T.’ Their t-shirts feel deliciously soft but don’t grab you in those places where you feel you have back fat or belly rolls. They also have great ¾-length sleeve options and even some Dolman-sleeve cuts.”
Our faves: The Stripe Rolled Sleep Bateau, $76; Flame ¾-sleeve button boatneck; The Classic ¾-sleeve Scoop, $50

—————————————————————————————————

Hanro

.

.

FOF Style Expert Sherrie Mathieson:
“I have alway liked Hanro for the softness, stretch and lasting power.” Hanro’s Classic, Everyday Cotton Tee ($64) is a mix of Egyptian cotton and elastane, so it provides a little extra support everywhere without being too tight. A classic, tailored tee that’s perfect for layering.

—————————————————————————————————

Fabrizio Gianni

.

FOF Style Experts Jojami and Deborah,
The Glam Gals, from Fabulous After 40:

“We think women over 40 look best in a V-neck or boatneck that skims the body nicely. Of course the shirts need to be high quality to withstand washing. The tops from Fabrizio Gianni are tops in our book! The fit and feel is so yummy and they come in so many colors that are hot for Spring! Classic Cotton Short Sleeve V-Neck, $42; Long Sleeve Scoop Neck, $85

—————————————————————————————————

Club Monaco & Fruit of the Loom

.

FOF Style Expert Glenyse Thompson:
“For t-shirts, I specifically love to recommend Club Monaco, which luckily for us, just opened it’s online shop. I don’t purchase traditional women’s Ts, as they usually fit me too tightly through the bust and waist. I buy Club Monaco men’s tshirts ($28.50), with a bit of stretch. In a pinch I pick up a pack of Fruit of the Loom’s V-Necks ($13.49 for a pack of 5) at Target or Walmart.”

—————————————————————————————————

Zara

.

.

FOF Style Scout Lovey Dash:
This season, I love the striped t-shirts from Zara. The fit is great–plenty of room in the bust and hip area; classic boatneck–not too high; good arm length–and a trillion colors. Best of all, only $16 each. Go Crazy!

I think my favorite Tee would have to be the Croft and Barrow label from Kohls Dept. Store. It’s cotton, with a bit of spandex, comes in many patterns and solid and creates a pulled together look by adding a casual skirt, pants or jeans!

I have never paid anywhere near $85.00 for a t-shirt. If I ever did, this would be the style I would choose…….long sleeves and scoopneck. I do wear t-shirts when I work in my flower garden and my favorite has a big orb-web spider on the front………a la Charlotte. Most people shudder when they see it but I know spiders are our friends. With out them and the birds and other critters, we would be overrun with “bugs”.

Yes, I have an array of tees (they suit the casual lifestyle in Central Florida), and my current favorite is a fabulously flattering shade of pure, bright blue, with 3/4 sleeves and a scoop neck, fitted top and sort of a fly-away hem. It looks great (as do all my “decent” tees) with white jeans.

Which tee shirt I prefer depends on the season. I live where winters are cold so my most beloved tees in those months are medium weight cotton blends, have long sleeves and turtlenecks to go under and compliment wool sweaters. In summer I like light weight all cotton or cotton/spandex blends, short sleeves, boat neck or higher round neck (to cover more of those ugly neck wrinkles you know). I like all my tees to be long enough to stay tucked in and not show the hem half way up my tush through pants or skirt. BTW, I never put my cotton knits in the dryer and they keep their shapes and sizes forever.

Fortunately I sew so that’s all I make nowdays. I like them fitted but not too fitted. For RTW you can’t go wrong with Eileen Fisher silk jersey Ts. Pricey and not a lot of colors (black and white) but nice and long lasting.

BTW, Maybe I’m cranky at my age but I do not like the off the shoulder boat necks that are so prevelent in RTW. I tried them with a tank underneath that covers the bra straps but I am not comfortable in them at all.

Of the tops your experts selected, I love the styling of the pink Fabrizio Gianni top. Maybe it’s the former dancer in me, as it has a ballet styling that I believe flatters a nice collarbone and strong shoulders, and the sleeve and cut of the top flatter the figure without being too form fitting, or too boxy and short.

My favorite T right now, is the Gap-Favorite T Long Sleeve. I have it in a couple of colors, and am on my third white one, because I wear them under everything, and they are soft, durable and sleeve length is long enough for my arms. Highly recommend it.

I have more t-shirts in my closet than any other clothing item. Long sleeve, short sleeve, 3/4 sleeve, v-neck, scoop neck, etc. One thing they all have in common is the comfort factor, the second thing is the durability factor. If not, they don’t make the cut. I don’t necessarily have a favorite brand. I have everything from designer brands to Target and Chico’s. T-shirts are just so versatile.

YEARS ago I had a tee that was very similar to the fabric used for baby tees. I can’t remember how or where I got it and haven’t found another since it’s demise. Since then I have tried many brands (though not going as high up in price over $25) and have not found a favorite since the 80’s.
Having a favorite t-shirt these days would depend on the fabric, cut and sleeve design. Could this be the one??

As my shape changes (more middle no matter how much exercise) I find I don’t have a favorite Tee any longer. I actually bought jersey so I could make my own because Tees are generally not long enough and, if they are not skin tight, they are too loose. Most waistlines come up to my underbust. I’m just frustrated with fit and it has nothing to do with the price of the Tee.

I found these T designs to be rather basic and ho-hum. I always liked the ones we grew up with as kids we called “poor boys”. They had scoop necks, sleeves just at the elbow, and often textured fabric. These days with my “blubber belly” I’m lucky to find a T long enough to cover my belly button down to my hips without showing the pants waistline, or being too tight across the hips and riding up. I also prefer long sleeves even in the Texas heat, as I’m always feeling chilled, which gets worse the older I get. Also, I avoid the horizontal stripes with my figure, and would like a pattern that minimizes the blubber belly.

I found ONE tee that I will be seen in public wearing – it’s an elbow sleeve, empire waist loose fit from JJill that they offered several years ago and have not offered since. When you have my body shape, anything looks pretty good until you sit down and if theres’s not enough material to blouseit out around the waist, all that 61 year old flab is accented. NO THANKS. I feel like a stuffed sausage in every Tee I’ve tried. Not ver flattering or appealing.
