{What do you think of this look?}

This fab and funky FOF from Austin, TX, was spotted shopping with her husband (who was wearing matching glasses) on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Her redcessories made her hard to miss! Our take: She looks like someone we’d want to be friends with. But do you think her style is red hot, or–not?

Glenyse Thompson: “Her red, statement necklace and great eyeglasses against her grey dress really work! I love those patent walking shoes. I understand the functionality of the puffy vest but think a chic trench coat instead, would have made this look a home run.”

Glenyse Thompson is a personal home and wardrobe stylist and the creator of Styleosophy.

.

Sherrie Mathieson: “There seems to be no shortage of women who mistake weirdness for stylishness and individuality. She’s wannabe artsy, but there is no art here. One thing she is though, is comfortable–from her loose dress, wash-and-wear hairstyle, and comfortable, masculine shoes. The only piece I actually like (with a different outfit) is her down vest.”

Sherrie Mathieson is a leading style expert and Random House author of Steal this Style and Forever Cool.

.

Lovey Dash: “Maybe I’ve had a little too much champagne for New Years, but I do not mind this look at all. I’m not saying I would wear this, but it works! The drapey dress with the down vest is so Isabel Marant. The necklace irks me a bit, but she makes it work with her eyeglass frames. The shoes are weird but they sure look comfy if she’s touring the town.”

Lovey Dash is a Beverly Hills-based stylist. She was formerly in VIP sales for Louis Vuitton on Rodeo Drive.

.

Susan Grant: “This woman looks very cute with her artsy touches. I love the way her red glasses, lips and necklace brighten her up. The only thing that bothers me is the pockets on her skirt–they are one element too many and don’t work with the length of her vest. Otherwise, her appearance is very pleasant.”

Susan Grant is merchandise manager for Muse, a full-service jewelry showroom.

Love the eyeglasses and the necklace, but the skirt-vest combo just doesn’t work. The way those “puffy” pockets from the skirt stick out of the puffy vest draws attention to the wrong part of her look. Good start….. bad finish!

She DOES look like someone I’d want to be friends with, and I love her glasses, lips, hair, and great smile. But as a friend, I’d tell her the dress is awful, the shoes only work with pants, and the red necklace draws too much attention to her neck (not her best feature). Put that vest over a black turtleneck and black slacks, and add a red scarf and bag…NOW we’re talking cute!

Love her hair, her smile, the dress looks interesting, don’t mind the shoes or tights, but hate the vest with this outfit. I would prefer a black cardigan sweater with a simple draped cascade front (length-about mid hip or a little below.)
PS I don’t dislike the vest, but this ski(?) vest seems all wrong for the sophistication of the rest of the outfit.

The red color of the glasses and necklace work well with the vest and her coloring and her personality seems to shine in that color. I think I would rather have seen a scarf in that color than the necklace. The color of the dress is great, but the style just doesn’t work at all with the rest of the outfit.

I’m totally about wearing comfy cozy vests… however I do not adore it with dress with the big pockets, tights and chunky shiny shoes. I’d wear the dress with tall boots or sandals. The chunky shoes need a simple straight or boot cut black casual pant, or brit plaid. I can tell she has spunk!!!

Good for her! She is making some bold fashion choices and seems to be dressing to please herself. That being said, I’d like to see her replace that saggy skirt with something equally comfy, but more sleek – there are tons of knit pieces out there that would be perfect. And although good walking shoes are essential, hers are too “old lady” for such vibrant woman.

So, she came to NY and didn’t want to bring a heavy coat. Thus, the vest is ok. However, grey tights and shoes, or even boots would be a better look. I do not like leggings on ‘women of a certain age” – but that is a very personal opinion, therefore I do not agree with that suggestion. I like the addition of color, and perhaps it works for her, but I would prefer a scarf to that necklace. Is it plastic?

She is obviously comfortable in her own skin. The shoes I understand because of the comfort factor. Since she was walking around NYC, they work. She seems like a fun, spunky gal. Love the haircut & red framed glasses. The rest, not so much, especially that dress or is it a skirt & blouse? Whatever it is, it’s too baggy & the pockets have got to go. Like the paddock boots, but with a shorter black skirt or black pants or leggings. The puffer vest would work if it was maybe black and a sleeker cut. Taken all together, it’s not a great look

This is a sparkling woman who has thumbed her nose at being a fashion plate. Obviously she was striving for comfort, including the shoes. I may not dress like her, but I don’t have a problem with her look.

I like the glasses and the vest and she does look nice with the red lipstick. The walking shoes may be comfortable but they seem “big” to me and I would definitely not wear the necklace nor the skirt. Either a red smaller scaled necklace or a scarf with red in it could replace her necklace and I would wear a pair of grey slacks or A-line skirt instead of what she is wearing. It is after all NYC but you do want to have fun. She does look happy and at this point that’s what it’s all about.

This is a woman dressed comfortably, to tour a city. “Hot” is not the most relevant quality in that circumstance. If she doesn’t want to look like a tourist, she could swap the dress, which jars (in colour, weight and style) against the black tights and walking shoes (which look hip to me, with those corrugated soles), for narrow black jeans or pants, a top that pulls the vest and jeans together, and maybe a scarf. I don’t like big plastic jewelry but it’s a matter of taste. She can buy the outfit or accessories but one cannot buy that twinkle in her eye, which is totally hot.

I think that professional critics – whether they be art, literature, films, etc., are so attuned to their world that they look at their subjects differently than the rest of us. That is the only way I can explain the positive comments of the professional reviewers – stylists – above. That being said, as an outside observer…..let’s be honest here. It does not take a professional to recognize that this ensemble simply does not work. The woman herself radiates vitality and warmth and her smile makes you want to engage her in conversation. The clothes and accessories sans the glasses are all wrong. Starting from the top, the necklace is overpowering the pop of fun and color of the glasses. The puffy vest should be worn with something that does not “puff” – a straight silhouette – instead of the baggy pockets of the dress which do nothing but detract from the look. The shoes are far too clunky and “mannish” and take “sensible shoes” to a whole new level – one that should be avoided at all costs. Picture this beautiful lady this way – exactly the same from the chin up, but….. Crisp white blouse worn outside
charcoal grey pants with just a touch of lycra to make them super comfortable and long enough that they cover the top part of the aforementioned manly shoes, or get really creative and pair them with a great pair of red ballerinas. Now that is a look that will work!

As for the rest, the necklace looks like a child’s toy, the vest has nothing to do with anything, and the skirt/dress may have looked good with boots or more stylish shoes. The length of the skirt is wrong, it just cuts her, and therefore boots would have given better proportions. I can’t say anything good about the pockets, because the vest doesn’t let us see I’d they are a stylish accent or not. I just figure she was visiting in New York and the weather caught her by surprise so she had to throw something together (which still does not explain the necklace/matching glasses kitschy look). Could I be friends with her? Absolutely, she has a warm smile and loads of self confidence!

It almost works. The vest and the shoes are unfortunate choices. This clearly feminine woman is wearing what looks like men’s loafers, a couple sizes too big at that. The sporty vest does conflicts with the lines of the skirt, especially the drapey pockets. These pieces undermine what otherwise could have been a statement making outfit.

Could not agree more with stylist Sherrie Mathieson- weird is not the same as artsy. The lady is obviously comfortable but just substituting slacks for the dress could have saved this attempt at fashion.

Not hot. A bit too eclectic for me. It seems like either she couldn’t make up her mind or grabbed the first things she saw.

The glasses rock – the vest ruins the outfit making her look heavier than she is. A simple suede vest would work or a short leather jacket. Boots would be better vs the shoes……….they chop her…….

    Love the haircut!

Pockets on dress ruin the whole look. Shoes could have still been comfy but a little less clunky.

Even though her necklace is very eye catching;the first thing I notice is her contagious smile! The jewelry and glasses seem to match her upbeat attitude! Makes me want to go have coffee with her!

It’s all wrong. The shoes look like 1998 men’s slip-ons; a tall boot would have given her some balance and at least explain the presence of a puff vest. There are feminine walking shoes that balance comfort and style.

I think she is wearing a dress, but how would we know with her ski/hiking/camping vest on? Is she in the city or the arctic? The pockets look like the have rolls of quarters in them. And the necklace looks like a toddler toy. She appears to be petite and the size of everything she is wearing is overbearing for her frame.

The hair cut, red lips and glasses are keepers.

Are the experts above just trying to be nice? I would have to add eccentric to the bag lady categorization.

Love the pop of red color in the eyeglass frames and the necklace. But would prefer to have the huge red chain as a dramatic bib on a leather or chain necklace that has a single chain around the back. It looks fun and lively and she has an energetic glow that doesn’t quit.

A big NOT from my POV – sorry. Nothing is working for me here except the splash of color. Even the vest, which I do like as a look on top of skinny pants/jeans is oversized here and therefore misses on the panache. Keep the glasses – they are super funky!

Pardon my bluntness but she looks ridiculous. She looks like a bag lady. The glasses are cute but look like they made the frame out of that hideous necklace. No no no it’s a no no, sister beautiful gray hair!!!!!

The upper half is ok for her. Would not “work” for me. The bottom half kills the look. The skirt is really bad. I can’t imagine it ever working with anything! The vest and shoes would look much better with nice, warm slacks. Also, she should remove her hands from the vest pockets before having her picture taken.
