my favorite “cheap eats” haunt is Uncle Nick’s Ouzaria on 9th ave between 50th and 51st. There is an Uncle Nick’s Restaurant (aka in Greek “Estiatoria”) that is more expensive and not that great. But the Ouzaria specializes in Greek Meze (tapas). I am a white wine drinker so would recommend a glass of Kretikos or Moschofilero (both by Boutari wineries). Also in the theater district is Orso’s – It’s expensive and you need a reservation but the food is fresh, delicious, and its always fun for Broadway actor sightings!

When we visit NYC, we like to try ethnic. We enjoyed the Ethiopian food at Blue Nile, Amy Ruth’s in Harlem for Southern Cooking, Ithaka, a Greek restaurant and for fun, the Peruvian and a hole in the wall restaurant that serves great chicken at Pio, Pio.

    I like both of these:
Perilla, American (New) | West Village 9 Jones St. (bet. Bleecker & W. 4th Sts.)
    212-929-6868
Annisa…they have an all-woman owned winery wine list
    American (New) | West Village 13 Barrow St. (bet. 7th Ave. S. & W. 4th St.), 212-741-6699

Then you live in what I consider the best area in town for restaurants. My other faves are Babbo, Lupa, Lanterna di Vittorio.

I can advise you better if you tell me what you like to eat and what kind of atmosphere you are looking for as well as price point. I can make some great suggestions.

thanks, Jyl! My husband and I love locally-sourced food prepared simply and well! We’re not partial to a specific cuisine, but we like a laid back, casual atmosphere that still has a good list of wines. I’m totally open to anything you might suggest. We’re sick of the same old place!
