    Hi Shelley!!

Museums in NYC!!! The Metropolitan wil keep you enthralled for two days… Check the program schedule online. They offer seasonal exhibits, while others are permanent. (You may take pictures if you explain to the guard they are flashless…) The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) is also very exciting, and last but not least The Museum of Natural History has a magnificent Planetarium show… I mean fabulous… Guggenheim Museum, Saint John the Divine Cathedral, and Trinity Church… I am assuming you are visiting The Big Apple. Please check out the Raw Bar under Grand Central Station… It is phenomenal… As a last suggestion I would look through the DK Witness Travels book on NYC… it is the best guide there is, bar none..

    Bon Voyage!

I have to agree with those who suggested the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It takes a lot of time, but can’t be beat. My favorite museum of all I have visited.

I know it’s been said and said and said, but I can’t stop myself. Don’t miss The Met unless they lock you out. There are items there, and displays, and whole rooms, that will take your breath away. Wander until you’re lost inside Egyptian pyramids, stand in a room taken whole from a house built by Frank Lloyd Wright. One afternoon there has stayed with me a lifetime.

Pick up a New York or New Yorker magazine before you go to see what special exhibits are going on as well.

Hope it’s not too late to make a suggestion for a smaller, more focused suggestion: The American Folk Art Museum. An amazing collection and gift shop,

The Neue Museum, a little north of the Metropolitan Museum on the right side of the street in an old brownstone – on a corner. It is a jewel. They have an outstanding collectiion of German and Austrian abstract expressionist art . There is a fabulous authentic Austrian coffee shop/restaurant. Sometimes they have cabarets in the evening. It is a beautiful place with a winding stair case and fascinating shows. Ron Lauder and the late Serte Sabarsky started this impressive museum. The book store is wonderful. They sell reproductions of some of the pieces designed by the Viener Workstadt. I own several and I buy wonderful books. Lauder bought several world class Klimpt art which is the show case. They have vitrines full of pices designed by these artists working before and after WWI. I cannot say enough about this outstanding museum. Gerri Shute

It sounds like a real find. Thanks so much for the great information. I just told Geri (FOF Founder) about it. She said that you are very knowledgeable about museums.

Well, Geri Brin is the real find. Isn’t she. She is an inspiration. I may come in to NYC for theater and museums in mid May. That will be my first stop and sometimes, when I am lucky, I get to see Geri. I live in Chicaog and do all sorts of things, but NYC is my passion. Do try the Neue. Gerri

You will really enjoy the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Always have works by featured artists besides their standard works.

The Dahesh Museum of Art (http://www.daheshmuseum.org/index.php) is the only museum in America dedicated to collecting and exhibiting 19th- and early 20th-century European academic art. This is, next to the Met, a museum that houses and venerates beauty in art, and especially of the academies of the 19th and early 20th century…and even some later works of the 20th century. This should NOT be missed!

    Hi Shelly,
The Guggenhiem and the The Metropolitan are always a treat. They are right down the street from one another on Fifth Avenue. The Whitney is cool and the Museum of SEX in the Village on the Bowery is edgey and interesting if you want to take a walk on the wild side. Enjoy and remember no flash pictures inside the exhibits.

I guess it all depens on how open or closed minded one might be. The museum (of SEX) does exist and is very well attended. One might want to look inside themselves rather than outside at others to gauge thier own comfort level. We are all adults here. Aren’t we?

    Hi Shelley,

There are many great museums in NY City. If you are a fan of Modern Art, you can’t beat the Museum of Modern Art, affectionately called the MOMA. It’s main galleries are located at: 11 West 53 Street (just off 5th Ave.), New York, NY 10019-5497, (212) 708-9400.

If you want a long look at art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the place for you. This is a huge museum with artwork from around the globe and going back to prehistoric times just up to the Modern Era. It is located at: 1000 5th Avenue, (opposite 82nd St.) New York, NY (212) 535-7710.

Please check each museums’s website for hours, special shows, admission, satellite locations, and tips on the best ways to visit. If you “Google” them you will find their websites very easily. Good luck and enjoy your visit!

Why limit yourself in this great city? I agree that MOMA is fantastic but New York is filled with museums depending on your criteria. Let’s think out of the box, The Museum of Television and Radio MTR on 52nd Street will literallly take you back in time, The Guggenheim, magnificent, the Planetarium is a must see even if you’re not a science buff. Love history, can’t skip the Museum of Natural History and there’s even the Museum of New York. It’s endless and as the reader stated before me, it’s just a Google away. Have fun in our fair and wonferul enriching city and don’t forget to go to the TKTS booth and take in a play. ENJOY! Arlene (alev18)
