I have a number of vintage jewelry pieces that may have some value, that I am willing to sell. How can I get the best value without paying an appraiser?

I have taken pieces to a local jeweler and just asked his opinion of the value to see if I needed to insure the items. He gave me a ballpark figure without doing an actual appraisal. I was pleasantly surprise with his quotes, it never hurts to ask.

you can e-mail photos of the pieces to vintage jewelry specialists all over the world and see what they say. Google vintage jewelry specialists. Do the pieces have manufacturer’s names?

You can check on ebay and see what similar items sell for.

Start checking antique stores or on E-Bay for similar pieces. I love to buy vintage jewelry and these are the places I go.

In my area of Cali, the local paper has a columnist who writes a weekly column on antiques. He lists many shows. He also lets you know when he’ll be at a show to do free appraisals. Might your area have such a person? Or at least check on local shows to see if the might have same offer. Good luck! Shari

Thank you for your inquiry about your vintage jewelry. I would begin by visiting a nearby antique shop that carries vintage jewelry. If you see items similar to what you have, ask about their prices and history. You may also search online for sellers of vintage jewelry, contact the seller offering to send photos of the vintage pieces you are willing to sell. Are these items vintage fine jewelry or vintage costume jewelry? Contact the person who deals with the appropriate category. If the jewelry is vintage costume and you wish to send me photos of a few pieces I will try to help.
