I am not sure exactly what you define as “East”. Los Angeles is so large and there are so many small cities that can fall within that definition. I know that there are arts pockets in the area of downtown and moving east toward Whittier. I went online and East Los Angeles College located in Monterey Park looks like it offers studio art classes. It’s probably to late to get enrolled this semester but you might try. At least stop by and speak to the instructor (they are usually quite helpful to dedicated artists). The instructor may be able to guide you to a good community resource or an art community.

Go to art shows at libraries and all the museums you can get to. Sign up to be on mailing lists at all of them – that’s how you will start to hear about what’s happening in the art world.

Finally, I suggest you make arrangements to attend the art walk at The Brewery. It takes place twice a year; in April and October. It’s free to go, free to park:there’s a nice reasonably priced restaurant on-site. It’s the old Pabst Brewery just north of downtown L.A. off the 5 freeway. It’s been converted to an artist’s enclave and most of the artist’s will have their studios open and be available to talk to. There are probaby 100 studios and many artists live right on site. Work of all types (sculpture, painting, metalwork, paperart, you name it). These are serious professional artists and it’s a great opportunity to ask where they studied and for recommendations.

I hope this gives you some help. Good luck in your quest.

P.S. Cal State Long Beach & Long Beach City College have great art s programs. Also there used to be a terrific studio art teacher at Golden West College in Huntington Beach (Darren Hostettler).

    Hi tckflow,

When I started researching your question I discovered that there are tens of dozens of options in the LA area, therefore, I’d like to ask you a few questions, if I may, to narrow down my response to you. I apologize for imposing on you and answering your question with six of my own but I live on the east coast and need some help from you in order to give you the best response possible.

Are you seeking courses for yourself or a child?

If you are looking for yourself, are you looking for a degree program or non-degree related courses?

Are you a beginner or an experienced artist? How would you describe you level of ability? (I ask because some schools only offer advanced level courses.)

Are you interested in classical drawing and sculpting or more modern and/or abstract approaches to either or both?

What mediums do want to work in for each subject? For example, sculpting: clay, stone, wood? Drawing: pencil, charcoal, pastel, etc.?

Last, how far east/north/south in LA do you mean, please give me some parameters by mentioning towns or landmarks, such as Santa Monica or Griffith Park?

Thank you very much for your question, it is an interesting challenge for me and I am enjoying the pursuit of an answer. I am looking forward to receiving your answers so that I may continue om my journey for you.

    All the best,
    Guru Berti

I would contact art centers, comunity colleges, art associations, neighborhood centers, YMCA and YWCA, local galleries. They may be able to help you find an artist in your area that gives lessons. Community Colleges often have adult classes for non-credit.
    These organisations might help.

    Southern California Artists Association http://www.socalartists.org

There are a lot of resources in your area. I hope this helps!

I’d also check with one of your local museums – not sure if you are looking for a degree program or just classes to enrich your talent. You might also check with local art galleries – sometimes the proprietor works with local schools to find new artists. Good luck!

When you go to art showcases, find the artwork that speaks to you. A lot of times, artists offer classes to share their technique and style. One of the most important things to learn in art is to find your own voice. I’d be delighted to answer any questions about the art world in general and how to effectively break into it! Have FUN!

Check out your local museum. Most museums offer low cost art classes with a variety of choices from drawing to painting to sculpture etc. You could do a google search for local art centers in your area as well. Both options can put you in touch with amazing people doing amazing work that can inspire and motivate you in wonderful ways.
