Need a recommendation for a hair stylist and make up person for my son’s wedding in October. Some where near the JW Marriot in Buckhead would be convenient.

Rosiey60, please tell me a little bit more about your hair and what kind of looks you like. I have several recommendations based on your needs.

My hair is a short layered cut, I’m looking for someone who has an updated, edgy style, not the traditional “women of a certain age” short hair cut.
      Thanks

Ok! I’d send you to Zev at Michelle Coulter Salon, on Pharr Road, right in Buckhead.

Rosie, I forgot that you requested a make-up artist in the vicinity as well. Aside from a couple of artists in the dept. stores (Alex at MAC in Nortsdrom and at Neiman Marcus, Cleo with Laura Mercier and Gwendolyn (not sure that’s her name but I know it begins with a “G”) at Georgio Armani. Alex is very accomplished and has done a lot of makeup for runway, print and has worked with Nars, Shu Emura, and is now a director with Mac. Cleo does beautiful makeup, but for my tastes it’s a little bit heavy. Gwen (I hope that’s her name) does very pretty make-up and is in our age range. The good thing is that if you go to them at the stores, the session is free. Call to make an appt and be sure to tell them what it’s for. For a fee, Gwen and Cleo will also come to you. Not sure about Alex on that, but I bet he will, too.

Debbie, Thanks so much for all this info, I will surely check it out. Could you also recommend a restaurant for an informal rehearasal dinner/open house for about 75 to 100 out of town guests? I’m not thinking sit down, more like a buffet or heavy hors d’Oeuvres.

Rosie, Atlanta is a great city for shopping and dining. There are so many options available, but no restaurants that I frequent offer a buffet on a regular basis–perhaps they do for special occasions, but I just don’t see it. The only place I know that does a buffet is Checquers in Dunwoody who offer a Sunday Brunch Buffet, but it’s been many years since I’ve dined there. You might check OpenTable.com If you find a name or two that sound interesting, please let me know and I’ll tell you if I know anything about the restaurant or the food.

Hi Debbie, Just got back from vacation, thanks for your response. I don’t think I was clear about finding a restaurant that has a room and would cater to a private party. Are you familiar with Max’s Woodfire Grill? Maybe I’ll post to the entire listserve. Thanks.

I ate at the Woodfire Grill this weekend. It was fantastic. There were 3 of us and we all loved our selections and the service was exemplary. I can’t wait to return to Atlanta and go there again.

Roxee, thanks for sharing. Rosie, there are 2 Woodfire Grills in Atlanta. One is Max Lager’s on Peachtree and the other is on Cheshire Bridge Rd. Top Chef’s Kevin Gillespie is chef on Cheshire Bridge. I’m not sure if the two restaurants are at all related.

Hi Debbie, It was Max Lager’s , do you know if it’s near the JW Marriot or the King Plow Center?

      Hi Rosie,

Max Lager’s is about a 10-15 minute drive from The King Plow Center (provided the traffic is moving) and they’re closer to each other than the Buckhead JW Marriott is to either. The other Woodfire is much closer to Buckhead. Max’s has quite a good reputation.

Are you experiencing concern about transportation, or are you wanting to keep things in Buckhead? Atlanta is very spread out and is definitely a driving town. Even Buckhead is quite large–more mileage than most would want to walk!

There are many great places all over town, and Buckhead has no shortage of great ones. You might try the Ritz Carlton, 103 West or Pricci, and Brio. I think the best thing to do is call around and ask them if they’ll do h’ors d’oeuvres or a buffet.

      All the best!

      Debbie

Thanks Debbie, since most of the guests will be from out of town, we were thinking of providing shuttle buses. Is there a hotel that is more convenient to the King Plow Center than the Marriott?

      Ok. Hotels near King Plow:
–Twelve at Atlantic Station (Mixed use development, including Mall, Theaters and Restaurants)
–Hotel Palomar – A boutique hotel (my husband and I love this chain of hotels)
–Hyatt Regency – An Atlanta landmark, busy hotel.
–Courtyard Midtown – Good location, but just a hotel.
–Georgian Terrace – Historic building, directly across from the Fabulous Fox Theater (premiered Gone With The Wind), great reviews.

rosiey, we had a terrific meal exactly as you wish at Veni, Vidi, Vici downtown. It was in a private room, as we were celebrating my sister’s retirement. They cater to your every whim there too and there is private parking.
