Mirassou! I love everything about this brand – the price (around $10), the taste, and it’s very easy to find! Mirassous also makes the best Pinot Noir around, if you’d like to try a fruit-forward, smooth and mellow red.

it depends on what kind of chardonay. I prefer a light clean crisp tasting one. Not exspendsive at all, LaTerre. I t also comes in a zinfindal, and Merlot. California wine.

It’s been so long since I’ve had Chardonnay. Sorry. My preferences run to Sancerre or Sauvignon Blanc but if I do think of one in my previous life, I’ll let you know. WOW! Just remembered. Kendall Jackson was one of my all time favorites when I did drink Chardonnay. Makes me think I should start again.

I know it will sound unlikely but some of my favorite wines come from…..Idaho..St Chapelle is a great little winery with exceptionally good “whites”…they are reallly worth a try

If you can find one, J. Lohr makes wonderful chardonnays. Chateau St. Michel is also very good and consistent. If you can afford it, try introducing your MIL to a French reisling. Contrary to their German cousins, French reislings are crisp and flinty and are delicious served very cold. Another guru mentioned Montrachet – now that is one heavenly wine! Good luck.

The 2007 Cameron Hughes Lot 115 Russian River Chardonnay about $10 rated 90 pts is focused, stylished and good.
Another is the 2008 Chateau Ste. Michelle Columbia Valley Chardonnay also rated 90 pts and about $10 is a true Californian Chard-fruity, balanced and expressive.
For something sweeter if that is her preference then the 2008 Rustenberg Stellennbosch Chardonnay at about $20 and rated 92 pts has a touch of residual sugar but the acidity gives it an excellent depth. After the 3rd glass some find it too sweet.

Fat Bastard Chardonnay 2005 (It has a happy fat little Rhrino on the label)

    Chardonnay
    from France
An elegant, pale golden color with aromas of vanilla, hazelnut and toast. A full-bodied Chardonnay with bright, fresh fruit flavors and a hint of oak.” This is a very reasonably priced Chardonnay which you maybe able to pick up for around $10.00. Salute`

For a really great gift, step it up a bit with one of the following: Argyle from Willamette Valley-$20, Argyle Nuthouse Reserve-$35, Cakebread Cellars Napa-$50, Chateau Montelena 2008-$50, Far Niente Napa-$60. My favorite unoaked chardonnay is Kim Crawford Marlborough-$18.

At around $18 a bottle, Rodney Strong is an excellent choice for an ‘every day’ selection.

Rodney Strong would be my first choice also, they make a superior Sauvignon Blanc also!

Like so many it is a personal preference. If she like something mild (my favorite) I just tried the Chardonnay by Francis Copolla. Very smooth.

You mean really, really great? Go for the best. A Chassagne-Montrachet (white Burgundy). White Burgundy sets the standard for Chardonnay. But if she’s more New World in her tastes (basically anywhere but Europe), a big, oaky, buttery Chardonnay from California is the antithesis of Burgundy. Think Mer Soleil or Rombauer. My current favorite Chardonnay, however, is La Follette Chardonnay, made by Greg La Follette, the great winemaker for Tandem and Flowers wineries. Beautiful nose, beautiful balance, and tastes great!

Just wanted to let you know, I splurged for the Chassagne Montrachet! The excellent wine-seller at my local shop recommended one he likes. I have yet to hear from my mother in law whether she’s tried it, but she was impressed by the bottle 🙂 I’ll let you know when it receives rave reviews!

    Rombauer Chardonnay
    winemaker’s notes:
Rich and vibrant tropical fruit flavors blend with toasty oak notes. Peach, pear and a touch of pineapple integrate with creamy vanilla. This full-bodied wine has a velvety and lingering mouth feel. Our favorite pairing for this wine includes pasta primavera, halibut and grilled chicken.

You can’t go wrong with Chateau St. Michelle Chardonnay..I believe it comes from Washington State. It’s more oaky and buttery than other chardonnays, so it’s extremely smooth. Usually price is at $12 or so. I love it!
