I am looking for a good nail salon that specializes in helping women keep their natural nails at their best! I have extremely thin weak nails but have no desire to have acrylics, gels, etc. Thanks!

I use Burt’s Bees cuticle cream and Almond Milk hand cream on my hands every night. I massage the lotion into my nails and hands and then put on a pair of spa gloves to let it all soak in. It has completely changed my nails. My cuticle is practically nonexistent and my nails are hard as a rock. The key is you have to do it everyday.

I never wanted anything or NEEDED anything but my natural nails…but that changed for me around 60 …so I took a chance on the gel nails….totally love them..I can do anything …gardening, scrubbing woodwork, and opening all flip top cans, with ease…they never chip or break..I get my natural looking gel nails done as needed and depending on nail polish color…usually about every 4 to 6 weeks. I really love them..I just always feel like I look finished and well groomed. You can also get only gel nail polish…which I heard was very good if you have your own decent (to you) nails. Best wishes, and I hope you find a solution that works for you !

I had acrylics and loved them but my mancurist quit on me. I soaked off my own acrylics in acetone for a half hour over 2 days. It hurt terrribly to take them off. My nails looked liked they had come from a war zone. I thought I could never get them back. But I remember someone telling me to use Emu oil and almond oil on them every night. I did it religious. I didnt’ put anything else on my nails. In about 2 months they were growing like crazy. Emu oil and almond oil are like 2 miracle oils. You can use them on your face to fight wrinkles even. I hope this helps. You can buy emu oil at a health food store, the same with the almond oil. Or you can buy both products over the internet.

This does work really for nails. However, if you want to apply polish you must wait about 3 weeks without any emu oil or almond oil because otherwise your polish will come right off. Your nails are too moist to let any polish adhere. You should also try Biotin 5000 mcg for skin/ hair/ nail support. My doctor’s nurse told me about this supplement and it also is fabulous. She and I both buy ours at Wal Mart. It’s the Spring Valley Brand. There are 120 capsules in a bottle and you take 1 in the morning. Do you have any tips for growing nails? Now Emu oil and almond oil are fab for you skin also. I have to tell you a great story that proves my point. I was at a Fred Meyer a local food and pharmacy chain. I saw a woman I hadn’t seen in years. She didn’t have any make up on ( good lesson, never leave home without your face on). She looked at me and said Gail my God what are you using on your skin, you have no wrinkles and it is luminous. I told her my secret and she couldn’t believe it. She told me I thought I was using some expensive serum. So girlfriend go for it.

Thank you so much for your reply! We have a health food store close by so I will check out both oils there. Not sure about the Biotin – I’m not a pill taker! lol

      Rebecca,
Biotin is a vitamin or a supplement. Not a prescrition. You really should give it a try. Ask the people at the health food store.

I live in New York so I can’t recommend a salon, but I have weak nails and nothing I ever did helped. So I got silk wraps 10 years ago and love them. The polish stays on well for two weeks and the nails look great. Silk is far better than acrylics and gels.

How often do you have to go to have the silk wraps filled in? That’s the main reason I haven’t done the acrylics or gels, I didn’t want the constant expense.

What are silk wraps? I have heard that shellac nails stay on 2 weeks.

I have the silk wraps filled in every two to three weeks. If you don’t abuse your nails (by opening boxes, gardening, etc)!and a competent manicurist does them, that time frame can be expected.

Silk wraps are small pieces of silk fabric that get wrapped and glued to your nails. Moments after they’re applied, the silk hardens and is shaped like a nail. They hold polish beautifully so there’s hardly any chopping and they stay on beautifully. (I sound like I have my PhD in nails. LOL)

I have found it extremely difficult to find any thing other than the CND Shellac that lasts. I wear my nails short, even with my finger tips.
