I have systemic lupus, take a lot of medication. My skin is so dry and wrinkled. Am looking for reasonable products (on fixed income) to help hydrate and hopefully remove some of wrinkles.

When I see patients with ‘dry’ skin I always first question what they’re washing with. Many soaps are just too harsh for sensitive skin, leaving skin dry and irritated. Gentle, well priced cleanser options include Cetaphil Cleanser and Whole Foods 365 brand glycerin bar soap ($2 at my Whole Foods!).

The second key point is that sun protection is really important here, both to help keep the lupus quiet, but also for anti aging skin care. I always recommend using a micro zinc oxide sunscreen every day. It needs to have 5% or more zinc oxide and be well made. A good choices is Solbar Zinc ($14). I’ve also seen my patients bring in an even less expensive product from Trader Joes ($3 I believe). I don’t know about the quality of the formulation, but Trader Joes is pretty good at finding quality products.

Anti aging/anti wrinkle products are tricky with lupus. Some people with lupus have facial skin rashes due to their disease and anti aging/anti wrinkle products are often irritating. One option that may help with wrinkles and the ‘crinkles’ of dry skin is Amlactin Cream. It’s a very well priced AHA product with 12% lactic acid. If it is a little irritating it can be diluted with another bland cream like Cetaphil Cream. Gradually one works up to full strength. It would sting on any skin rash though. Another option would be a vitamin C product, but the good ones are often expensive and they can sting too.

I just wrote a blog post on ‘dehydrated’ skin and some of this info is there http://www.drbaileyskincare.com/blog/what-is-dehydrated-skin/

I have a post summarizing my opinion about today’s anti aging skin care options http://www.drbaileyskincare.com/blog/whats-the-best-anti-aging-skin-care/

I also have a post with tons of info on dry skin care http://www.drbaileyskincare.com/blog/dermatologists-complete-guide-to-dry-skin-care/

I hope some components of this information turn out to be helpful for you.

An often overlooked (because it is a no longer new) ingredient that does exactly what you need is alpha hydroxy acid (lactic or glycolic acid).
First discovered by a dermatologist who was looking for a successful treatment for genetically severely dried skin called icthyosis, he discovered that it improved the aging changes of the skin as well as the hydration levels. These ingredients are derived from milk and sugar cane. They exfoliate but moisturize at the same time and make the skin plumper, smoother and brighter. Popular brands include Glytone, Lac Hydrin or skinfo vital AHA, yet many brands exist. To get real improvement try to get one where the free acid value is at least 6%. Some companies advertise a high% but then water it down so that it isn’t as strong as what is written on the label.

Lupus can result in sun sensitivity. It is important to wear physical sunscreen to protect against sun damage. For anti-aging, look for products with antioxidants and peptides. Green tea and hyaluronic acid are great ingredients. Stay away from products containing retinoids as they can make skin extra sensitive.

I have this problem with the sun, today for the first time in months I applied sunscreen to my face, arms and neck. I live in south Texas, so you see my predicament. I try to stay out of the sun as much as possible. Thanks so much for the information
