As noted by our other knowledgeable Gurus, those Hens and Chicks are tough, beautiful, and very adaptable. And they’ll spread like crazy wherever they find a micron of soil.

In addition to all the lovely options already noted – here are my ‘can’t kill them’ options for hot/dry/sunny areas: hens and chicks (you can get them in colors from purple to blue, red and green. The other option I have which is crazy hardy (down to where I am which can go down to -30 F) is Opuntia phaeacantha (Prickly Pear Cactus). It comes with big gorgeous yellow flowers and then develops very decorative dark red ‘pears’. The only downside to this is that it is rather ungainly and makes big pads which flop around and has wicked spines on it. But the flowers in the spring are absolutely gorgeous – mine are yellow, about 3″ across, with bright red centers. if you are looking for an annual – my go to for dry and sunny, poor soil areas is portulaca, the ‘moss rose’.

Thyme, Sempervivum (hens and chicks),Ice plant, smaller Sedums, Gentiana all would work. Silene and Lavender or California poppy also work in rock gardens. There are actually lots of plants to choose from depending on your zone and climate. Hope this helps.

Here are some plants that I would try: Yarrow (Achillea) comes in a variety of colors- yellow, white, pink, red, Stonecrop (Sedum)are good for these conditions- you could try angelicum if you want a low profile, Sage (Salvia) ‘Snow Hill’ for a white one, Creeping Rosemary (Rosemarinus prostrada), Coreopsis moonbeam will give you a nice yellow flower, Fountain Grass (Pennisetum)- with this one I would recommend the rubrum or red one if you are anywhere near open or wild space because the setatum is an invasive species, Lavender- there are various ones like Munstead or Hidcote Blue that should do well and Creeping Thyme (Thymus).
Good luck and the last thing I will say is try to build your soil. I know it is tough in rocky areas but the more you can build your soil with organic amendments the better chance of success with plants you will have.
