I bought a spa package for laser hair removal, and as I got to know my spa therapist I remarked on how beautiful her skin was. I asked if she could recommend any products for me and she suggested Glytone for my skin (large pores, signs of aging). I absolutely love the way my skin looks after 6 weeks of Glytone. My skin is softer, brighter, smoother-looking and my pores less visible. I also use a daily moisturizer under my mineral makeup, and my skin looks wonderful.

Pores appear larger because you are still making sebum. You might consider a laser treatment known as photodynamic therapy (PDT). During this treatment, a topical liquid known as Levulan is applied to your face and is absorbed by the sebaceous glands (glands that produce sebum) for approximately one hour, after which time, a laser is applied on a light setting with the intent of “activating” the Levulan. As a result of this process, the sebaceous glands shrink, which translates into less sebum production and smaller pore size. There is no downtime, but it is imperative to strictly avoid sun exposure for 48 hours after a photodynamic treatment.

The size of pores is determined by genetics, and they can appear bigger as we age. The structure in the face looses elasticity and pores will look larger because the skin is not supported. The problem can also start because of too much oil, a buildup of dirt due to makeup & dead skin cells that leads to clogging that can make pores seem larger.

My dermatologist, Dr. Andrew Franks has always told me to wash my face right after my gym activity or you increase the risk of blocking your pores & they become enlarged. You can also use wet cleansing cloths for speed cleaning after a sweaty outdoor workout without access to fresh clean water.

    1) Products that contain salicylic acid or glycolic acid (chemical exfoliates that dissolve dead skin cells).
    2) Use a cleanser with exfoliating beads that perform sloughing manually.
    3) “Biore Skinpreservation Even Smoother Microderm Exfoliator” made with superfine alumina crystals, the same used in professional microdermabrasion. This product will smooth out skin for a brighter more even skin tone. http://www.drugstore.com/biore-skinpreservation-even-smoother-microderm-exfoliator/qxp214168

    At the doctor’s office:

    1) Professional micro-dermabrasion
    2) Chemical peels exfoliate & stimulate collagen production over time.
    3) DermaSweep is new technology using patented brushes that “sweep” away the dead skin layer resulting in a deeper peel & polish of skin.
    4) Invasive option Fraxel laser focusing on pores, fine lines & wrinkles. Pores fill up & minimize appearance. It’s expensive & does require several days of down time. It takes time to see results.
    5) Ask your doctor about Retin-A that helps unclog pores or Renova, which is not as harsh.

Try Clinique’s Pore Minimizer Instant Perfector – pores appear more than 50% smaller with a matte finish that lasts up to 8 hours. http://www.clinique.com/product/CATEGORY4919/PROD16909/Skin_Care/Pores/index.tmpl?cm_mmc=google-_-ECOMM-Makeup-Brand-Phrase-_-Concealer-PoreMinimizer-PoreMinimizerInstantPerfector-_-clinique pore minimizer instant perfector

There are many primers and skin product on the market that claim to reduce pore size, but those are only temporary measures. Keeping the pores clean helps to minimize the look of large pores. Since I’ve started using Clarisonic when cleansing my skin, I’ve noticed a big difference in their appearance. Also using detoxifying masks to keep pores clean helps as well. I’ve had some minor laser work done on capillaries and noticed the benefits to my pores when I had that done as well.

I know how you feel. I never thought in my mid 50s I would still have oily skin in the T zone with large pores.

I use Avon Flash Facial Revitalizing Concentrate every morning. It visible improves the look of pores. It is part of the Anew Rejuvenate Regimen that is for people experiencing the first signs of aging (30 ), but if I use the Regimen for people 50 , it is too oily for my skin and makes the pores worse.

Unfortunately products to shrink pores, even though they make promises, nothing can shrink pores. But you can definitely change the appearance of the pore. First do keep them scrupulously clean & exfoliated. A good quick exfoliator is Avon’s Clinical Microdermabrasion peels. Then use Cliniqu’s pore Refining Solutions which really works well. After that think of spackling ! If you have ever filled in holes in walls with spackiling this is what you can do to reduce the size of your pores! Use a good foundation primer. Smashbox has one of the best around. When you apply a primer your foundation glides over the pore walls & doesn’t stick to them emphasizing the size of the pore. Hope this helps explain it & good luck !

I recommend using retinol at night to shrink pore size. Sunscreen is a must during the day as it can make skin sun sensitive. For a more aggresive method, I recommend the Genesis Laser. It’s a non-invasive treatment which will even skin tone and minimize pore size. Results are best after three treatments.

    Hi Oveeda
Large pores can be the result of losing skin elasticity, so the best approach is to focus on a good skin anti-aging product. Look for serums or creams that have ingredients that help improve elasticity. One such ingredient is a peptide called ChronoLine. You can find it in La Vie Celeste’s Extra Rich Creme. Good exfoliation will also help greatly: daily brushing with a facial brush such as the Clarisonic or the less expensice Sirius Skinsonic will have a visible effect on pore size, a gentle glycolic peel a couple of times a week will also help. Finally, many of my readers swear by Prep by Your Best Face – a face mask and exfoliator with great anti-aging ingredients all in one. Try some of these out, but you do need to use them regularly and give it a few weeks to see results.

One of the reasons pores get large when we perspire, and do not clean the skin immediately, which is usually impossible to do. Dirt and debris from the environment enter into the pores, we break out, and the result is pore stretching.

I highly recommend that you use a brush, such as the Clarisonic or other comparible brush, to perform a deep cleansing on your skin. This really gets into the pores.

It is also good to use a wet terry washcloth. Do not rub too hard, or you can break little capillaries. The little fibers from the terrycloth will help to clean out your pores.

Apply extra virgin olive oil to your skin. It will moisturize without clogging your pores. The cell size of extra virgin olive oil is smaller than your blood cell and will penetrate immediately.

Use a good mask. This always helps to tighten pores. You can actually get good results from a mud mask such as Queen Helene Mint Facial Mask, which you will find in most drug stores. Mud masks work well to tighten pores.

Another pore-tightening mask is egg whites. Whip up two egg whites and brush them onto your skin. Leave on for fifteen minutes and rinse off.

NuSkin has an amazing tightening face mask that I used once a week very successfully on my teenage children and all their friends when they were younger.

Last, but not least, at the spa is the radio wave machine. Or a dermatologist may have the thermage, a stronger form of radio wave. The radio wave will tighten pores better than anything else. If you have the thermage treatment, it costs about $5000. The radio-wave treatments should be in a series for about six weeks, and may cost you from $1000 to $2000. In both cases, you will see younger and tighter skin.

    Good luck to you.

    Hi there
Unfortunately, the size of our pores is in our DNA — we can’t change it. However, we can change the appearance of our pore size.

If you have large pores, no doubt you had oily skin when you were young, so you probably do not have the lines and wrinkles common to other women your age, so be thankful!

Since you do have large pores, the primary thing you can do is keep them clean. Large pores will obviously hold more oil, dirt, makeup, etc.

Here are some suggestions of products that work (I too am a large-pore girl)

    1. Skin care — I LOVE Dr. Brandt’s line, Pores no more. An intro kit is $60 and contains a complete program.
    This set contains:
    – 1.7 oz pores no more® cleanser
    – 1 oz pores no more® vacuum cleaner
    – 0.5 oz microdermabrasion
    – 0.067 oz pores no more® anti-aging matiffying lotion
    – 0.068 oz pores no more® pore refiner

    2. Makeup — Start with a primer
I use NARS Pro Primer for myself and my clients. Even days when you don’t wear other makeup, your primer will keep you skin in top shape by holding in you skin care treatment products,
    Pro-Prime™ Pore Refining Primer – Oil-Free
    What it is:
    An oil-free gel primer.

    What it does:
This gel primer instantly refines the look of pores, regulates shine, and creates a matte surface to the skin for smooth and long-wearing makeup application. Mineral Powders manage oil in the T-zone while blurring the look of pores, fine lines, and wrinkles

Blush– Try Fusion Beauty SculptDiva™ Contouring & Sculpting Blush with Amplifat™. I just started wearing this blush and it’s GORGEOUS!
    What it is:
A double-duty cream-to-powder blush that imparts a youthful, flushed look while helping to perfect the skin.

What it is formulated to do:
This high-performance cheek color is infused with rose bud extracts

    http://sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P262201&categoryId=B70

Finish with Too Faced Primed and Poreless Loose powder —
This is also use on my clients and for photoshoots.
    http://sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P266708&categoryId=B70

    What it is:
A silky, translucent finishing veil that adjusts to any skintone while minimizing the appearance of pores and fine lines.

    What it does:
Primed and Poreless Powder contains a high-resolution, reflective powder technology that transforms skin by visually minimizing pores, fine lines, and imperfections for an airbrushed-looking finish. Our weightless powder can be worn alone, or under and over foundation to prep skin, lockdown makeup, and control shine for a complexion-smoothing, flawless finish.

    Hope this helps!

I like to explain pores like buttons in tufted upholstered pillows. The more pillow stuffing the deeper and bigger the tufted button looks. Pore size can’t really change but you can make your pores look smaller if you ‘de-plump’ the skin between the pores. The easiest ways to do this is with 1. clay masks, 2. astringents, 3. exfoliation. Other tricks like IPL treatments seem to refine the appearance of pores in my experience. The Clarisonic helps to unclog them and that helps them appear smaller. Shine control will also make them appear smaller because the undulating skin texture will be less highlighted.
I give more detailed recommendations in a post I wrote in June: http://www.drbaileyskincare.com/blog/how-to-shrink-the-appearance-of-large-pores/

Some of us are just BORN with large pores and spend our lives trying to hide them!! Try a good exfoliant like Avon’s Clinical Micro Dermabrasion. Use it two or three times a week and it does a great job of sloughing off the dead cells. In between those treatments you can try using a one-step peel. Avon’s Advanced Retexturizing Peel does the job while being gentle on the skin. It won’t make the pores go away but it can make them much less noticeable.

A full coverage foundation will help too. Once your skin is nice and smooth, the foundation will make your skin look terrific!!

    Good luck!! Chris

I have to confess, your situation is one that might be difficult to solve.
Although I sell Avon, I also use and recommend other products that I use.
Smash Box face primer ( the clear one ) is fabulous.
It only smoothes your face, your pores will remain the same size, but will be smooth and not large because Smashbox fills them in.
It’s the best product I have ever come across.
It was created to wear under make up to create a smooth face when on camera
I use it without make up and my face is smooth…it’s a amazing product…I do not sell it.
I buy it on line from an ebay seller 🙂
It makes your skin smooth without adding color…it is not sticking, it’s like liquid silk
    Best wishes,
    Linda

I can empathize- it’s been a lifelong struggle for me, too. Your best bet is to consult a board-certified dermatologist. She can recommend laser resurfacing, peels, or other treatments that can make a dramatic difference. DON’T expect a cream or a primer to solve the problem, although it might make a temporary difference in how your skin looks – for a couple of hours. You can’t shrink pores, but you can improve skin texture so that they look less prominent. BTW if you live in NYC I highly recommend Dr. Debra Jaliman. Also Dr. Jame Heskettt of Wellpath. Hope this helps.
