We are traveling to Seattle the end of the month. My husband will be in a conference during the day. Can someone tell me where I should (or shouldn’t) go, things to definitely see, places that are safe interesting and even off the beaten path. Love to know what the locals enjoy not the travel bureau

I try to spend the occasional day in the city myself, acting like a tourist rather than a local.

Here are a few of my favorite things to do:

Visit Pike Place Market – Pick up a bottle of wine, some meat, cheese, fruit, and have a picnic in your hotel room. This is always a favorite when we stay in the city.

Take a ferry ride. This is especially enjoyable on a nice day. Just get a round trip, take your camera, and get some great views of the city and the water.

Seattle Art Museum – Check out to see the current exhibitions to see if there’s something that interests you.

Woodland Park Zoo – I just went over this past weekend, and it’s a reminder of how much really good stuff they’re doing at the zoo. It’s on a bus line from downtown, so I’d recommend heading off for an afternoon.

Space Needle – Yes, it’s often seen a touristy, but it is an iconic part of Seattle. The Needle was built for our World’s Fair, “Century 21.” Well, we’re in the 21st century now, and the Needle is still standing. Opt for the observation deck, and enjoy the great views. Dinner is not a great value, in my opinion. I always dismissed the Needle as something to do – too touristy – but all my out of town friends want to do it and thoroughly enjoy it. (NOTE: For another city view opportunity, check out the Smith Tower in Pioneer Square.)

Seattle is a very safe city. Spend some time down near the pike place market and enjoy the views of the Olympic mountains. Fabulous restaurants and fun shops all
around. Check out Belltown just a walk up the street for hip shops and the Seattle Sculpture park. There are also trolleys and easy bus service throughout downtown.
Also check out the new Lake Union corridor.
