HI, I’M 56 BEEN WORKING IN A FACTORY FOR OVER 20YRS. THIS JOB IS LITERALLY BREAKING MY BODY DOWN FROM THE YEARS OF PHYSICAL LABOR. I WOULD LIKE TO GO INTO A NEW CAREER. I KEEP HEARING IT’S TOO LATE, THAT I’M TOO OLD. DO YOU AGREE? I KNOW IT WON’T BE EASY. IF I DON’T I’LL DIE SOONER THAN LATER.

Of course it’s not too late! Oh my god NO!

At 40 I moved to a new country; at 45 I had a new career; at 51 I wrote my first cookbook (followed by four more) and at 58 (now) I just self-published a novel and its selling like crazy on amazon and barnes and noble (by the way, it’s geared for the over-50 woman – “Menopause in Manhattan”).

Believe in yourself; do the research – ask for advice from people in fields you like and most of all; take chances – don’t be afraid to risk a bit – you might just get what you want!

    And good luck!

Whoever is telling you it’s too late is giving you bad advice…time to listen to the people in the know! Like Sarah, Ginny and Cathy have already stated, make a list of what you enjoy doing and from that list you will be able to create a new career.

Let us help you. If you spend the time making that list (and posting it) and be sure to include everything no matter how “silly” you might think it is, then I will spend the time tossing back suggestions.

My guess is that other Gurus will do the same for you.

WOW Style….you may have asked the wrong person for I have changed my career at 30, 40 and 50. SO I firmly believe you are NOT TOO OLD to go into a new career. Now at 56 you may be limited in what you WANT to do, but certainly not what you WANT TO DO. For I too am a firm believer in that we can do anything if we set our mind to it. So if you want to change your career you can! The ten most powerful two-letter words: IF IT IS TO BE, IT IS UP TO ME! So this lady says GO FOR IT!

You are not too old at all. Figure out what elements of your past work you can transfer to another industry and function. Go on-line to the web sites of companies in those industries and look for job descriptions in those functions to begin to determine what you might be qualified for. Approach those companies with a fresh resume that speaks to those skill sets and passions. Don’t just apply on-line but build a network on Facebook and LinkedIn that you can tap. Physically, take up yoga and strength training to build back your body. Get a new hairstyle and make-up to feel beautiful and greet your new world with a smile and confidence. Don’t let anyone tell you you are too old or not good enough!
