I recently quit smoking. I’ve begun Menopause, and I am at least 50 pounds overweight. I joined WW, and lost the first 10 pounds relatively easily. I work out six days a week for at least 1 hour, usually more. Is it normal to hit a hard plateau this soon? It’s so discouraging…

    Firstly, congratulations on quitting smoking! That’s a huge hurdle that I haven’t mastered yet! Secondly, congratulations on your initial weight loss. I lost 103 pounds six years ago. It took a year to do it and there were lots of highs and lows. The plateaus, particularly early on, are discouraging but don’t let them get you down. Just keep plugging at it and you will get on the scale one day and be shocked. Your first clues will be in how your clothes fit. When they start feeling loose, you’re on your way to your goal! You are putting a lot of effort into your weight loss regimen so don’t forget to reward yourself for each ten pounds you lose. Even if it’s just buying a new pair of socks, that’s a reward! Best of luck to you and just think of how good you will feel knowing you accomplished this!

    You’ve gotten a lot of good advice! Just one other tip: are you doing cardio intervals inbetween the strength training exercises when you do your circuit training? This is also a nice way to diversify your workouts and keep your heart rate elevated throughout your workout.

    I quit smoking Mother’s Day of this year and started a no carb diet. I think that the hardest part of quitting smoking is having something to do with my hands. I keep a bottle of water with me at all times. It takes away the craving for cigarettes, helps me to drink lots of water that fills me up instead of snacking on high calorie foods. When I really need a snack I eat almonds, high in fiber and low in carbohydrates. I have lost 40 pounds since quitting smoking and I am 60 years old. I wish you luck. It can happen, just hang in there.

    So far you have lost weight which is great. The first few pounds are usually water weight that has been locked up in the body. Remember it took time to put on that extra 50lbs so it will take time to take it off. It will take at least 3 months before you start to really notice a change. You are working out one hour a day but is it all one type of workout? For the best results, vary your workouts between very intense, aerobic and steady and make sure to take a day off in between. I would encourage you to hire a personal trainer for 2 to 3 sessions so an expert can help you tailor some workouts to your specific needs and help you execute the exercises in the correct manner.       I have been considering hiring a trainer but have no idea how to begin, where to find one that would suit my needs, etc. I will take a look at your blog to see if there are recommendations…

      As for my current workouts, I have an old ankle injury, so I lean toward the elliptical for my cardio- I vary the time and intensity. I also have resumed Pilates and started Zumba. Several days a week I have added circuit training, alternating legs and arms.

      Go to a good gym and asks to speak with a trainer. Tell him/her about your ankle injury and do it straight off. Then describe your goals and why you feel a trainer could help. You will be surprised how good most of these trainers are but you need to click with one who will listen to you.

    It is very normal for this early quick weight lose, as the first pounds are generally related to water weight. Now you are getting to the fat burning pounds. Another thing you may experience is a great deal of phlegm coming up… this too is normal. Congratulations on quitting smoking… let your health and renewed energy be your motivation.

    I too needed to lose weight 10 years ago. I lost 30 pounds with WW and have never looked back. There were highs and lows. Keep counting those points and it will become a way of life. You can do it!!

      I agree, I joined WW and lost my first 10lbs, then broke a bone in my foot and that keep me inmobile and overeating. But bone healed and I am back to WW and the points. dont give up, And I am past menapause by a few years, My metabolisn did not slow, it went into a coma..lololol. just keep trucking,,,,,
