Living in Miami, sunscreen has always been an automatic part of every day. An immunologist tells me I’m allergic to them!!! Does anyone know of really good moisturisers, cleansers, etc., with no SPF value at all???

As a woman who has suffered from melanoma, basil cell and squimous skin cancer I can definitely recommend zinc oxide as the very best sunscreen. If you are looking for moisturizers this isn’t it….but it will protect your precious skin. If a product does not have SPF how else can it protect from the damaging rays of the sun. The very best sunscreen will always have some amount of zinc oxide in it……it does come in a light cream (jar) as opposed to the regular tube.

I really appreciate this. The list of things to which I’m allergic to is 2 pages long, single-spaced, but the immunologist did say I could use zinc oxide. Thanks so much!

Let me know how your skin reacts! Zinc oxide is also repelllant so you can swim, hot tub (especially nice on a cruise!!) or worry free if you sweat while exercising.

Then you may like Dr. Denese tinted sunscreen, I am not sure of all of the ingredients but I know it does have zinc oxide, also Dr. Perricone may be an option!!

Thanks. I’ll check them out ASAP!

People are typically allergic to the chemical sunblocks on the market and therefore use physical sunblocks. The two types of physical sunblocks that are available are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Both provide broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection and are gentle enough for everyday use. Because these are physical blocking agents and not chemicals, they are especially useful for individuals with sensitive skin, as they rarely cause skin irritation.Going out without any sunblock is asking for trouble and skin cancer risks are very high especially in South Florida. Please at least use a hypoallergenic moisturizer that has SPF 30 in it. I love the Jafra skincare line. It is great for sensitive skin and has a wonderful product history of over 55 yrs in business. Go to Jafra.com for more information and to purchase or receive samples contact products@cancerwecare.com. Samples are FREE!

Actually, not so good for those of us with Lupus!

Every product has something to which I’m allergic (I was hoping the bee products wouldn’t, but propolis is a no-no). Thanks so much, though.

You are in luck-most cleansers don’t have a SPF at all, and night time moisturizers, and many all purpose moisturizers do not have one either. Anew Rejuvenate is a gel cleanser that I really like-no SPF. Anew Night Revitalizing Cream isn’t heavy-so you could use it during the day and it wouldn’t feel like your makeup was sliding off. Another great all purpose moisturizer is Clinique’s Dramatically Different-just a nice basic moisturizer. If you are really dry, try a heavier night cream. You really have a lot of options-just read the label to be sure, but you’ll be surprised how many products don’t have an SPF. Good luck!

I’ll call my Avon friend right away. Thanks so much! I never thought of them.

Most lines of skin care offer moisturizers with and without spf. If you like the line you are using, then check and see if they have one. Try using it without the spf and see if you are still irritated by the product.
On another note, I agree with the others, there are so many ingrediants that you can be allergic to that may or may not be part of sun screen. I think Jessica Krant had a great suggestion when recommending a patch test through a dermatologist to make sure of the ingrediants you are allergic to and what products contain them.
Let us know what you find out. Best of luck!

Hi there —
That is really tough thing to hear. Did your immunologist specify the type of sunscreen that you are allergic too? Chemical? Natural? Organic? Powder? Cream? Spray?
What is exactly your allergic reaction? Is it a topical reaction or do you have internal reactions too – lymph nodes swelling etc.?
Often times, it is not so much the sunscreen, but actually the other components of the product.
I am a huge fan of pure mineral powder for a facial sunscreen. It kills two birds with one stone. I don’t mean makeup, but a translucent version of titanium dioxide.
Can you wear makeup that contains SPF? Is there a certain brand that produced the ill effects? Or has it been consistent with every brand you use.
I would love to hear more about your specific reactions.
Thanks–
Tracey

The list of chemicals to which I’m allergic is LOOOOOOONG, but PABA is the worst!
traceybrown wrote on :
No one even uses PABA anymore. It’s been off the shelf for years. I wonder why he included it…
If it’s chemicals you are allergic to then consider trying a non-chemical sunscreen. There are inexpensive brands like Aubrey Organics, Alba Botanica to higher end lines like Dr. Hauschka, Jurlique and Tata Harper as someone else mentioned.
Joanne Vicente wrote on :
Her in Miami, There’s PABA in just about everything for the subtropical sun. There’s a long list of other chemicals that also cause both skin reactions and, more frighteningly, anaphylaxis, so I end up in the hospital.
Joanne Vicente wrote on :
Haven’t checked Dr. Hauschka yet, but all the others contain ingredients I can’t use. This is really a pain, but I do thank you.

Tata Harper Skincare line is all organic and awesome results with no spf in anything.

Cobrateacher,
Before I start recommending products, I would like to know for sure WHICH sunscreen ingredient you are allergic to. There are many different “chemical sunscreen” ingredients that you could be allergic to, and there are some “physical sunscreen” ingredients (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) that you are much less likely to be truly allergic to. I recommend before you panic too much you see a local dermatologist who specializes in patch testing for contact dermatitis, to determine which sunscreen ingredients you don’t tolerate. That way you will be able to find some products that may still have sunscreens, that you can use. There is a database of products that dermatologists can use to determine what’s still safe for you, once your true specific allergies are formally identified. The list can include sunscreens, moisturizers, makeup, hair care products, toothpaste, etc. It is a lifesaver for people with subtle allergies. This process will also help identify whether it is the sunscreen chemicals themselves, or possibly a preservative or other part of the vehicle creams that you don’t tolerate. Good luck in this important investigation.
