Great jersey dresses….plain colour, well cut with a great piece of jewellery. Think of the dress as a canvas, adding your personality and great accessories. Works for me and my very happy clients! My dress company, NoLoGo-chic specialise in this product. It is multi seasonal. Don’t forget the good hair colour and cut. Pretty nails. Smiles from the heart.

A real 50’s woman is generally confident, knows what she wants, and she has a beauty or inner light as well as inner energy that is exuded through the glow in her face. She has beautiful skin from eating healthy, exercising, and proper skin care and probably appears at least 10 years her junior. She dresses chic, maybe a little trendy, loves beautiful clothes made from the finest materials. Her clothes are finely tailored and she loves adding splashes of colors to even her conservative suits. She uses her imagination to create a unique style all her own and isn’t afraid of color. She wears somewhat figure forming clothes, certainly not baggy, for adding extra material will only age her, making her look frumpy, accentuating any extra weight she might have on her frame, if she has any. She wears Spanx, who doesn’t these days regardless of age, and loves to accessorize with scarves, belts, hats, jewelry, both real and costume. She loves to layer beaded semi precious jewelry containing Hindu systems, bracelets, necklaces and even rings, and doesn’t feel the need to match all the accessories for that’s too boring. She wants to walk down the street, have head turns not because she looks old and freakish, but because she looks confident, hip and fabulous. She LOVES make up, even bright colors if applied tastefully and since she has spent much time studying fashion magazines and understanding how to put together different looks, she wears everything younger women wear only not as short and with much more imagination, style and confidence. I can tell you most 50 woman want and do look wonderful, better than they ever did in their lives and they want a large variety of fashionable, trendy as well as conservative designs from top designers as options to choose from in order to create her own unique style. A 50 woman will never set foot in your store again if you present her with frumpy, drab clothes, the type worn by many of our mothers when they reached 50. And please make sure you have a variety of sizes to fit women in every size and shape, tall and short, since many women over 50 have added a few pounds to their frame, as well as experiencing hormonal bloating from one day to the next, forcing her to have some clothes in different sizes to accommodate these unpleasant menopausal side effects, but still wanting to look beautiful and chic. Most women these days want to look as youthful and beautiful as possible, which is also a necessity because of the poor economy and job market, and want the option to wear the same stylish designer duds shown on the runways and in the chic magazines, personalized to their own unique taste. The moo moo days of frumpy, formless clothing are long gone. She wants to look the way she feels, like the beautiful, sexy, classy woman she most certainly is. And don’t overlook some flirty, well placed lace on the clothing as well as having a nice variety of beautiful lingerie in your store. Many women over 50 are experiencing an increased desire for more romance and sex. Wearing beautiful lingerie under their conservative suits keeps those sexual juices flowing, making them feel desirable, beautiful and confident. If you asked most men what they find most attractive in women, it’s their confidence. That’s why so many younger men are seeking out older women for relationships and not simply sex. As such, if you have the things I have already mentioned above in your store, you will always have a steady stream of confident and beautiful women as loyal customers.

Good luck with that – and let us all know what you find! We are a large demographic with no where to shop!

Educate yourself. Read magazines and train your eye. Are you classic? Are you more adventurous? Learn which designers you relate to. Once you start to understand who you are in terms of style then you can start to express yourself with clothes. I love to express myself with fashion. I don’t look to others to tell me how to dress because they aren’t me. Fashion should be fun. There are no rules except for the ones you impose on yourself. The key is to know who you are and what you like. Start to experiment and see what you feel comfortable in. Lord and Taylor always has great sales.

I am over 50 and I still dress how I feel – I have given up cutoffs iin public but mostly I go for style…. cute fashionable tops & jeans and Uggs (still acceptable) – I like to think of Goldie hawn, rachael Welch, Cher, Oprah, and see what they are wearing for reassurance it is ok to dress fashionable into your fifties!!

Well you will have to go everywhere…..There is no ONE look for a woman over 50. The look is to wear whatever you feel comfortable in, meaning style wise, and what looks best on your body. If leggings, boots and a Bar Jacket from Dior looks good on you go for it… if its a classic pant and cardigan sweater set ,,, go for it

The best part about getting older is the fact that we do not have to feel to conform to any style, or otherwise,… just do what pleases you……

We agree there is no ONE look..Of course it depends on your looks, your personality, your environment etc. But I don’t think people need to essentially “conform” at any age (even in youth)…you are not freer just because you’re older. I do feel that there are guidelines that work for all ages (appropriateness for your figure and age for example)…and you can develop your own style within that context that suits you.

There is no one shop. If you shop at a store dedicated to “older” you will look “older”. The secret is to mix it up from shops and designers you like (classic with trend). My books “Forever Cool” and “Steal This Style” are devoted to this endeavor-over 50, over 55,over 60, and older (we physically change at more frequent intervals after 50). The key is to recognize (the books illustrate this on real people) what is appropriate at these ages, yet modern, youthful and ultimately ageless.

I just ordered both of your books — even though I don’t think I need much help it’s always good to see things from someone else’s viewpoint. I seem to have developed my own style over the years which goes from combines casual and chic — jewelry, sometimes high heels, vivid colors (in tops or dresses). Etc. I feel comfortable, but looking forward to your words of wisdom. I’m 66 going on 40.

      Hi CAnative,
I love your open mind and the fact that you are curious. That curiosity is what leads to observation skills and self education. It’s KEY in the world of aesthetics and style!
