Of all the places I’ve been, Palm Springs isn’t one. A friend is celebrating her 60th there with friends (husbands, too) and family for a relaxing and partying long weekend in June. I need help figuring out what sort of clothes to pack for the vibe of this location and likely activities.

Oh, one more thing — you may want to get a spray tan before you go, that way the light, pastel colors look better. Spray tans last about 7-10 days.
Or cheaper alternative is Jergen’s Natural Glow, a self tanner, medium, I use it a week or a few days before to build in some color..it’s the best.

Hey, I want to come to Atlanta!!! I live in Greenville,SC, so will plan a trip there in the near future and hope to get some advice from you!

Thanks again, Ruta. You’ve given me a very useful perspective for the trip with your posts. My husband and I love boutique hotels, but were recommended to stay with “the group” at the Hyatt Suites. Oh well.

Overall, Palm Springs sounds more like San Diego the LA, but without the beach. But I shall see! I’ll be looking for a boutique there, the name I’m not sure yet, that carries a line of easy to wear clothes that we have, Manuelle Guibal, and that we cannot keep in stock! It’s always great to see what other stores carry and style as it’s influenced by the environment. Look me up when you come to Atlanta, though. I’d love to meet you. Thanks again. p.s. About the tan–I’ve never done a spray and will consider it.

ok, super!!!! any other questions, give me a call at 917 686 5408..same time zone as you…Sure, of course stay with the group of course. If you end up wanting to go back, the cutest, Morrocan influenced hotel that I stay at is KOROKIA… if you have a moment to check out, it is very historic and charming and a lot of fashion shoots are done there…

This is a good overview from NY Times..the old restaurants are Melvyns and Spencers, but could be touristy and overpriced…best stick with this new info: http://travel.nytimes.com/2006/03/26/travel/26going.html?pagewanted=all

Let me know if you have any other concerns.. There are blocks and blocks on Palm Canyon Drive to stroll and walk, galleries, touristy shops, restaurants, I think Las Consuelas is the name of the big Mexican one, all outside with a big bar, (food is average Mex. fare) but nice to sit outside and they have music most times, and it’s crowded.. Nice place is Colony Palms, I stayed there awhile back. The “movie colony” neighborhood is where all the old Hollywood stars owned homes in the 50s.There is one famous inn, let me go see if I can find it, where Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack hung out.

Hi, I have been to Palm Springs many many times, after growing up in California. It’s gone through several ups and downs, and now is on the way up again! Lots of new hotels, think trendy and cool. You may want to pop into one of them, as Hollywood hipsters have made PS their weekend destination. As for clothing,
yes, cool, light fabrics, hat, sunglasses are a must. It’s casual but not in a baggy khaki shorts and tennis shoes touristy way. But it’s no Hamptons either. Capris, jeweled sandals, long city shorts. Yes the air cond. will be blowing and the desert can drop to chilly at night, but mostly nights are balmy..lightweight cotton sweater is good. There is not much fashionable shopping, and there is one main street Palm Canyon drive. Although there is a big mall out in Palm Desert if the girls want to do that if the guys want to golf. The Palm Springs tram is a good thing to do, up the mountainside. Hope this helps.

This time of year …it will be hot. So light airy clothing, I love silks for summer packing, they are light and take up no room in the suitcase. Activities, golf , swimming, shops. Sorry don’t know too much more on this location. take a big hat and sunscreen and light fun colorful clothing and you will do fine.

Thanks all. I think California casual and being prepared for extremes between hot-outside and cold-inside temps are the most helpful hints, so far. But what is the flavor of the place? Artsy and creative, or conservative and traditional? Town and Country casual or Americannin Paris touristy casual?

It is a very dry heat too so lots of moisturizer will be imperative. Don’t forget your lips!

Think hot weather, potential wind and air conditioning in every single building. For the outdoor time you want to go with light fabrics and colors in comfortable outfits. For indoor fun you will be in air conditioning so an over shirt, sweater or jacket is always a good idea. California is pretty casual too. Shorts, capris, skirts or cool dresses will work for the relaxing or partying. You might want to pick up one of those misters. Have fun and don’t forget swimsuit, hat, cover up and sunscreen.

She is right on all counts. It will be sunny and hot during the day, with all places air conditioned cold. Evenings do get chilly in the desert. California is casual but there is always room for some bling or glitz somewhere. You just do not need “evening wear” unless you have a formal function. I like some sparkle on my jewelry and on my flip flops or sandals. Sunscreen is a must, hats are great, gauzy fabrics look good and are cool to wear, light weight shawls come in handy. Have fun…

What a fun celebration. I recently celebrated that one in NYC and had the same questions.
It will be HOT. I mean average highs are 100 . At night it cools to the 70s. So first and foremost protect yourself with sunscreen, hat and some glamin’ sunglasses. PSP is very casual in a California sort of way. By that I mean you don’t need to dress up but do bring out the glitz with metallic sandals etc. You may want a wrap or very light jacket if you are spending time inside hotels and restaurants with AC. For sure a great bathing suit with a smashing coverup. Hope this helps. Your picture looks so cute, I am sure you will show up with all the right style you need.

Thanks, mm.travel. I figure it’s going to be hot. Thanks for the hints about glitz and Cali-casual. Gonna have to find a glitzy piece or two, as that’s not my usual style direction here in Atlanta.
