When do leggings work for an older woman? I am never quite sure if they are ever appropriate and what to wear them with.

Google http://www.TS14.com.au and have a look at Australia’s approach to leggings ‘Down Under’. I am a 65-year-old FOF and just love the TS14 clothing range which is colourful, practical, is comprised of layers for different seasons and situations. Drawback is that it is designed for Size 14 which is, I think, 12 by USA sizing. You can buy online, and they do take returns. These garments are wonderful for traveling because they wash easily, dry quickly, and don’t require ironing.

I agree with the others. Leggings are great for FOFs if worn with a tunic or under a dress. Black ones are especially flattering though any dark ones look good. I am short and don’t wear flats, so I wear them with a kitten heel or boots, and they look very cute, I think.

Love, Love, Love leggings. The important thing is what your wearing over top. I agree, that your tunic, or top should cover your posterior section, but have fun… they’re in and enjoy.

Well it all depends doesn’t it! Sometimes I say to my clients, if you have to ask…then maybe??? My client yesterday is an artist is has a rounded belly so long shirts and leggings are her ‘go-to’…but she was feeling like she didn’t have a ‘look’. Just remember leggings are never PANTS…they really aren’t and as many of you stated they are ‘comfortable’. Sometimes comfort trumps style. I’m not saying don’t I’m saying be careful. My suggestion to my client yesterday as she pulled out a pair of Chico’s no waist slip on jeans that were shaped to her lovely legs….Voila…it was a beautiful new way to show her shape and look more polished. She even had about 24 Hermes scares behind a door from days gone by when she used to treat herself…Paired them with a t-shirt and her look was dressed up! She was happy and chic and still felt comfortable.

You have to check your proportions in a full-length mirror. If you are heavy on the bottom the tunic or blouse needs to cover your rear completely. With me, the tunic has to be fingertip length, I don’t look right in a longer one or a dress with leggings. I always wear black or dark brown leggings and match my shoes or boots to them exactly. If you get it right it can be a very comfortable and slimming look.

They have become a classic part of a wardrobe as they are comfortable and work for today’s lifestyle. They should be worn with longer tunics and sweaters and look quite chic whether you wear boots(taller flat riding boots or shorter booties) as well as a ballet flats. It is truly about attitude not age. The key is to have great tops that are long as well as finding a good contour belt that you can wear to accessorize and create a more put together look. So much of fashion is about comfort and being casually chic….leggings have become an every day classic for many of our FOF women.

I’m months from turning 70 and live in leggings–better for my back than jeans (tight waist). No, I don’t always cover my rear; with a flat tummy and a BMI of 19, it’s not necessary. So if you feel you can rock it, go with it–at any age.

A key is to buy the right size legging/jegging. If they are sprayed-on tight with seams straining, the look isn’t going to work. If you have the figure for it, some jeggings now have back pockets and faux front detailing. Properly fitted, they can be a wonderful jean substitute when you want to lose the bulk regular jeans create. (traveling!) I love this look with a below-the-hip jacket or sweater (belted or buttoned) instead of a tunic. I am not a big fan of the short chunky ankle booties with leggings on FOFs. I wear flats or knee high boots with them. I don’t wear capri length anything either: it gives me a frumpy look when the line ends mid-calf. All true fashionistas check the “view” in the mirror before EVER leaving the house, too. Just sayin’…

Hi – leggings work when the “girly parts” are covered by a tunic or long top. Also, if your legs are athletic or not your best part, you may want to consider a jegging, which would offer more structure. Another option is a legging with a front seam, which gives a little more tailored look. A flattering look is a tunic with a somewhat fitted look – a cinched waist or belted look is a good choice. It can be difficult to find flattering tunics, however. One thing I have done is to look at junior dresses as tunic options. Or taking a dress you no longer wear and hemming it to a tunic length is fun and feels good to rework something you already own. The main thing I tell customers at the boutique where I work is: You have to be comfortable in what you are wearing. I don’t mean comfortable as in cat hair on the sweat suit, but comfortable in that you “own” your look – you have no doubt. Being uncomfortable (lack of confidence) in what you are wearing is palpable – people can sense it and then you don’t look good. Ask a good friend or post a pic and get some input when in doubt. I would love to see a pic of what you come up with! Good luck and have fun.

Happiest of New YEARS! The one thing I watch for with leggings is to make sure the line is not cut by the shoe. I usually coordinate my shoe exactly with my legging such that my body is not chopped by a top, then a legging and then a shoe. I prefer wearing boots with my leggings. Occasionally I will see someone wear ballet flats ..as long as they have longer legs, this can often look cute too!
Leggings with a higher shoe (non-boot) must be executed very carefully or you end up looking like Peg Bundy!

These can work for you with a long tunic top and some flats. Just keep that fanny covered.

Happy New Year….i am in love with leggings and hardly own a pair of reg pants.. Live in them… wear them with tee shirs sticking out of sweaters…. tunics…… I wear short boots, thigh high boots,, flats, ballet slippers … kitten heeled pumps… I try to keep my butt covered but really do not like a tunic… You can belt a long shirt over them easy to wear and travel with as well. I have all kinds, leather, suede, lycra,,,,all colors and patterns as well…… enjoy them!!!

I love leggings and I am over 60. They are marvelously comfortable and can be quite fashionable if worn correctly. The first rule of successful wear is to remember that they are not pants. They should only be worn with something that covers the fanny by quite a bit. I prefer at least mid thigh. There are tunics, short dresses and even dresses that hit the knee that can be worn with leggings. Anything you would wear with tights can be worn with leggings. I personally don’t care for high heels with them unless they are booties that cover the bottom of the leggings. Boots in winter, flats, and low heeled sandals in summer are quite nice. Have fun with it. I do.
