I am a frustrated 52 year old. I am about 5 foot3 and just under 120 pounds. finding age appropriate clothes is really difficult. Most are too large, cut too big, look old…or look too young. Any suggestions for stores, styles? one additional thing…I wear shoes with orthotics…bulky ….

Talbots (possibly their petites), Chico’s, J. Jill — online: Blue Fish; certain stores who carry FLAX (have to try the styles on to make them work).

You should not buy clothes from stores instead of that you can buy dress material for your self and go to tailor and tell them exactly the type of dress you want. This will help you the best way to get your perfect outfit.

You can hire your personal designer or tailor and can tell him your issues and get your clothes designed personally instead of getting behind stores clothes which are any perfect.

a seamstress in your area possibly at the dry cleaners can take in clothes for a cheap fee usually. i am also 5’3″ 120lb 54yo. never wear capri pants, get a nice blazer to the hip area, belts around the waist help also. I wear Birkenstock shoes these days they have so many trendy styles, plus they are orthopedic and will last for years, i hve sandals and closed toe shoes , plus if you get the sandals with the cork and the rubber sole and it wears out etc.no problem..there are shoe fixer places that are Birkenstock ready..

I am 5’2″ and weigh around 105. A couple of my favorite stores are Banana Republic, Kohls, Victoria Secret, and Macys. I try to shop for petite sizes, but sometimes regular sizes work, too.

LOL! At 68 and 4’11” – I can certainly empathize! I buy a lot from Coldwater Creek, Talbots and Drapers & Damons. All have online sites which is the only way I shop, as I can’t abide malls and haven’t been in one in over ten years! Those shoes shouldn’t be a problem if you wear some smart looking trousers. Also, re “age appropriate”…please think about accessories that are modern and fun. You are NOT old by any stretch of the imagination but you appear to be thinking old. I’m not saying you should be wearing mini-skirts but, girl, you need to go into some stores like Nordstrom or Coldwater Creek, find a savvy saleswoman in the petite department who can put some outfits together for you and then you can look at how really pretty you are! You also might think of doing something different with your hair. You sound as if you’re in a funk rather than frustrated. Your 50s are fantastic! My sister, in her 50s, just remade herself, had her breasts lifted and her eyes done too. She then went out and bought a new wardrobe and she feels like a new woman. She says “If you feel old, you tend to look old!” I think she’s right!

btw: I’m a color palette girl. I devised a palette for myself of basic clothing which I buy only in black, navy and gray. On that, I build with jewel box colors for sweaters, tops, scarves, etc. Black trousers and a black blazer paired with an emerald green silk blouse, gold earrings and a gold bracelet and watch can be stunning! Find your own color palette!

    Welcome to your best years!
